chapter six
[ hivahaw nimwey ]"where were you?" Nakili heard Ao'nung ask the minute she waved Neteyam off and walked through the doorway. she flinched and her ears flicked down as he stood there.
Nakili looked at him only a second before tilting her head. "what do you mean where was i?" she asked. Nakili knew that he knew that everyone knew... that she was never back until late most nights.
"it's dark outside. you heard father." Ao'nung crossed his arms big-brotherly. unlike him was he.
"i was at the water." the heavy Na'vi accent in her voice sounded as a question. he knew that.
"speaking to your mother?" Ao'nung asked, even though he already knew the answer. Ao'nung raised his eyebrows. ( i know that he doesn't have eyebrows, i'm talking about were his eyebrows would be. ) Ao'nung started again with hesitation. "and Eywa." asked he.
Nakili only looked at him. she crossed her arms, reaching one hand to play with a wooden bead on her dread. "why would i speak to Eywa... at this time of night." she asked, confusion fogging her airways.
"no reason." he shook his head and started on his way.
Nakili rolled her eyes. she grabbed his arm, "no Ao'Nung. speak." pulling him to face her, did she then speak through her teeth and looking up at him with determined blue eyes.
Ao'Nung groaned and sluggishly turned to her. "mother told me." he said.
Nakili was confused. "told you what?" she asked. but he didn't answer, so she asked once more. "Ao'Nung, told you what?"
"how you have no real father. Eywa, she's your father."
there it was. the conversation that she hadn't hoped to have with her brother. she didn't want that for either of them. she'd hoped he'd never worry about it, and she didn't even know if he was actually worried about it now or if he was just curious. either way, she wasn't prepared. even though he was her brother.
the story was what mattered. Kittäne, Nakili's mother, was honored by Eywa. so when Kittäne rested, Eywa created Nakili in order to rekindle a flame that maybe... shouldn't have been blown out. since Nakili discovered such, her only purpose she sought to preserve was to keep a continuous flow of the river that her mother created. even if the currents never stayed the same.
Nakili was a creation of Eywa.
Nakili shook her head in disbelief, backing up a few steps. "i knew that, Ao'Nung." she replied, her voice cracked and was tremulous.
Ao'nung expressed disappointment and mere bleak at her words. Ao'nung relaxed his shoulders with with tight lips. "i thought we talked." his face was unreadable.
"it doesn't have to be public." Nakili's voice was low as she looked down at the ground.
"i'm not the public." Ao'nung patted his chest. "i'm your brother." his voice was louder, determined.
"are you?" she looked up at him, his face dropped, and so did her heart. Nakili swallowed hard. Nakili didn't cry, but when she felt her left eyebrow twitch and her eyes start to water, she knew it was bound to occur. Nakili knew that crying was bound to occur. "tell me, Ao'Nung. are you my brother?" Nakili asked again.
Ao'nung clenched his jaw and upturned his eyebrows. ( i know that he doesn't have eyebrows, i'm talking about were his eyebrows would be. ) "yes." Ao'nung said to his best friend.
Nakili looked at him for a few seconds. Nakili was going to do what Neteyam suggested, but Ao'nung was her best friend. this hurt. "hivahaw nìmwey, Ao'Nung." Nakili walked to her room, leaving only a small piece of cracked Ao'nung left—rethinking his words, did he.
this hurt, Nakili knew.
