Practising "I Love You"

I sat in the darkness and looked at the stars
and my fingertips anxiously cradled my scars.
My heart fluttered hopefully like the flowers nearby,
as I decided to open my mouth and just try.

While I knew that some day the time would come
when I'd open my heart to a special someone
who would tell me these words with each blink and each breath,
while I knew that I still felt some tears in my chest.

"I love you," I whispered, too shy to be loud
and I smiled, 'cause the sound of those words made me proud.

I sat in the darkness and looked at the stars
and I wished for someone else to cradle my scars.
Who'd make my heart flutter like the flowers nearby,
who'd not know if we matched, but who'd still want to try.

It was in this moment when the world somehow changed.
The stars shone brighter and the wind smelled strange,
the flowers were whispering and the grass whispered, too
and the clouds formed images of things that I knew.

And I couldn't help a small smile breaking my ache,
'cause the universe had just said "I love you" back.
