A Fairy Tale Ending

The way we met was a story, our first date poetry
Our first kiss everything I thought true love would be.
It took a day from strangers to absolute trust
And I wanted a fairy tale ending for us.

When you held me the world would burst into song
And when we were apart the minutes dragged for so long,
I'd write odes about you and your beauty unjust
And I could see a fairy tale ending for us.

Except then you showed me who you really were:
The bad wolf in a costume for children to scare
Without honour or pity or honesty
And the fairy tale ending slipped away from me.

So now I sit at the window again and wince,
Because I'm not Cinderella and you're not the prince.
And I hope you're out there dancing in burning shoes,
Because now I want a fairy tale ending for you.
