Stars in the Night

The people you know are like stars in the night
out there's a whole universe.
Every one of them brings a little more light
and a few more secrets it bears.

Some are near and important, you see them each day
they guide your safe journey west.
Others you only see a few times a year
which makes their beauty no less.

Some are near, some are farther, and some are just there,
some you know everything about.
And of some you don't even know the name,
but still they shine bright in a crowd.

So when one day you look up to the sky
and one of them vanished from sight
it doesn't matter you'd noticed them just once in a while
now you guide your telescope there every night.

And just about then you begin to realise
everyone that we know in our lives has a place.
And even if it's not a big one as soon as they're gone
there's quite literally a hole in the fabric of space.
