Time Alone

Let's sit and read and work and breathe,
No moments that shall last forever,
Just mundane harmony and peace
Let's take some time alone, together.

You sit over there at the window and type
On your laptop, sighing from time to time,
Doing stuff for work or for school, you just write
In your own little bubble of everyday life.

And I'm over here with a book in my hand,
Forgetting the world around me exists,
Maybe drawing a sketch or texting a friend
In the silence of normal, no surprises, no twists.

So, you're doing your stuff and I'm doing mine,
Just as we would in our separate rooms,
But sometimes we look up at the same time
And exchange a small smile of "I'm glad, you're here, too".

And when your colleague won't answer your e-mail for hours
And when I can't figure out how to draw hands
And when you forgot to save when your laptop lost power
There's someone to agree to every word of our rants.

And when I solve a problem I'd been worried about
And when you get so excited you beam and near yell
And when I read a beautiful poem out loud
There's someone sitting here sharing those moments as well.

So, let's sit here reading and working in peace,
Not having to be who we're trying to be,
Let's enjoy the quiet and space to breathe
Let us just sit here, silently.
