'I'm sorry Kamijou-san, but the chances of you bearing any children are zero.'
A single sentence. It was all it took before everything fell apart.
Kamijou Touya embraced his beloved wife Shiina as she sobbed in despair.
'How... why did this happen?' Shiina spoke between sobs. 'I stopped years ago, but why...?'
'I don't know. I mean it's what it says here. I am so sorry, there's nothing I can do. The best thing for you both would be to adopt a child.' The doctor handed Touya a card. Cheap paper, with only a couple words in it.
Oyako Orphanage. Your family awaits.
Touya flipped the card around to see their phone number. Landline, it seems.
'Do they have a cellphone?'
'Sorry sir, but you can use my phone here if you'd like.'
Touya glanced at the phone on his desk. Then to the doctor. And to his wife.
Her reddened eyes pained his weak heart, and he rubbed her back to ease her inner pain. But the look in her eyes told him what he needed to know.'We'll, um, we'll talk it out a bit. W-When we get home I mean.'
-
The drive back home was filled with silence. The headlights lit the nightly path in front of them as the engine groaned. The sounds of the road, the slight rumbling of the car. The air within the vehicle was thick with despair.
'So what do you think, Shiina? Should we...?' Touya spoke up.
'Honestly, I don't know if we should. It's just...' Shiina sighed. 'I'm just so tired of everything Touya.'
Touya placed his right hand on top of her lap. 'No matter what happens, I'll never leave your side. Until death do us apart dear.'
Shiina sadly smiled. 'No good with that promise. I'm spoiled goods, anyway-'
The car stopped. Touya grabbed her arms and pulled her to him, covering her whole frame in an embrace.
'Dont say that. Please, don't say that again.' His tone was pained, cracking.
Shiina realized her mistake, and returned the big. Small tears streamed down from her eyes. 'You're right, I'm such a fool. I'm so sorry honey,' she sobbed.
For a couple seconds the couple's sobs were all that could be heard within the vehicle.
They were all that they had in that moment. Them against the world. They didn't know what cruel god up there had decided to play such a twisted fate upon them, but they couldn't go on and rage. All they could do now, was seek comfort to one another.
A comfort, so tender and loving, was interrupted by a loud crash heard nearby, and the very ground shook as the car nearly flipped, breaking the serenity.
'What was that!?'
'I don't know! Let's get out of here- Shiina where are you going?!'
'I'll go see if anyone needs any help!'
'Honey are you crazy!? Hey, wa- oh god she will be the death of me!' Touya groaned but he unbuckled the searbelt and bolted out of the car as fast as he could.
Luckily she didn't go far, as Touya saw his wife stop in the middle of a field.
'Shiina are you insane!? It's not safe here!'
'Touya.'
'There could be dangerous animals lurking around here or worse-'
'Touya.'
