Max’s POV
I sat down in one of the overly sterile chairs outside the rooms to wait. I still had Caleb in my and now I wished I had somewhere to put him down, he was getting wriggly and I didn’t like the kid anyway. I sighed.
‘Is your wife ok?’
A strong country accent came from beside me and I looked over to see a persona that matched the voice, a dark haired, tan woman with crooked teeth and plenty of freckles scattered over her face.
‘Oh, no, she’s not my wife’ I replied, slightly miffed at the idea that someone would think I was her husband
‘Oh, your girlfriend then?’
‘No, she is not my girlfriend either’ I was getting pissed at this point and I wished she would just leave me alone.
‘Ahhh, I see’ she smiled knowingly at me ‘Your crush’
‘Ok no. She is not my wife, my girlfriend, OR my crush! She’s my ex-girlfriend who cheated on me with my best friend and got into an abusive relationship! She turned up at my house last night and now she’s my housemate indefinitely! She’s a bitch!’ I said exasperated, I was tired and this woman had really picked the wrong night to mess with me
She inched as far away from me as she could on the hospital seat and I could tell she was embarrassed about how wrong she had been and slightly scared after my outburst, but I didn’t care anymore, I was too tired to care.
‘Mr Max Dowen? You may see her now’ The doctor poked his head out of one of the rooms. Dowen, I sighed. How I hated my surname
I got up from my chair once again to drag myself into her room. I kept Caleb in my arms, though I was itching to put him down. In my peripheral vision, I saw the woman sigh and slump in relief that I had left and I rolled my eyes, her fault for making assumptions.
I looked up and saw Jade looking up at me. I passed her Caleb and sat down beside her
‘Hey’ she croaked
‘How’re you feeling?’
‘Ok I guess’
I suddenly felt annoyed with Jade, she had gotten herself into this mess through keeping things to herself and she never seemed to learn, she just kept doing it and letting others clean up the mess she made. Well if she was going to live in my house, she was gonna start telling the truth, no questions asked.
‘Jade, Why the fuck did you not tell me you were knifed?!’ I stood up and looked down at her
‘I didn’t know it mattered! I forgot it was there’
‘Bullshit.’ I glared at her, after all that had happened tonight, she still continued to lie to me. ‘You did not forget it was there, you just don’t want to tell me’
Jade’s eyes teared up ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t want to get you in deep.’
‘Oh as IF Jade! I was dragged back into it when you arrived at my house –‘
‘He threatened you!’ Jade yelled. I was shocked, Jade never lost her temper. Not even when I found out about the baby. Not even then did she care enough to apologize.
‘While he was busy beating me up, he ranted about how he was going to kill you!’Jade sobbed and what she had said finally sunk in.
‘He said he was going to kill me? But he was just ranting right? Not serious, he wasn’t in the right frame of mind, he’s unhinged’ I babbled. My own best friend was planning to kill me? No he couldn’t have meant it, just talk.
