It seems hard to believe

That watching you pick up that Student of the Year award almost 12 months ago

Is now a distant memory

Or that I'm now a permanent artefact

Of your ancient history

But I had to face up to that harsh reality

That day I stood tall and proud

Even though the events of previous weeks

Had left a bitter taste in my mouth

I still remember that last message even now

The pain and heartache still hanging over me like a dark cloud

But that wasn't the time

This was your night

So I put all the hurt to one side

Switched my raging fire to simmer

Instead of burn

And wore my best smile

As I watched you finally receive the acclaim you deserved

Where are you now?

Nowhere to be seen

Travelling the country

And scaling new peaks

Living the university dream

Me?

A control freak if I believe what I read

A clever master who had you scrubbing floors I see

But you're as far from the truth

As you'll ever be

But hey,  who cares?

Now you're free

A clean break,  fresh start you made it

A cruel word game with my heart

You played it

I've hardly heard from you since that night went

The place I held within your soul now vacant

Looking back that ceremony was a game changer

It was the last time

I'd play an active part in your life

Because to you now

I'm nothing more than a stranger
