I want to take you back to a time
Where battle and conflict were rife worldwide
When millions of selfless people
Were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice
Those who fought in wars
To protect our shores
By putting themselves on the front line
Taking extraordinary risks
Just to stay alive
Its time to spare a thought for those who served us so valiantly
And those who unfortunately never survived
Air raid sirens were the lullaby
That rocked you to sleep at night
As Spitfires, Fighter Jets and Bombers ruled our skies
I could never begin to imagine what that was like
Even if I closed my eyes
I can't picture those scenes
Food was a rarity
Sent in rations and used sparingly
Explosions could be heard regularly
The battlefield housed our greatest enemy
The machine gun fire that was heard for miles
Was as harsh as could be
Rival ships blowing each other to bits
On the seven seas
Toxic gases invading the once clean air we breathe
All this death and bloodshed
I'm sure you will agree
Was an expensive price to pay
For our freedom and liberty
Even today we still have soldiers around the globe
Miles from home
Separated from their friends and family
Risking themselves in the line of duty
Yet we still haven't found a formula for world peace
All those years ago
Sir Winston spoke the truth:
"Never in the field of human conflict, was so much owed by so many to so few."
Now is the time to unite
To stand with and for our heroes
And wear the poppy with pride
Lest we forget
On Armistice day in November
In silence we will stand as one: together
And we will remember.
