When we reached the first town we had to slow our pace to a stride because there were so many people around and them suspecting us of anything would complicate this situation which we couldn't afford- especially in a town like this where they were stuck in the witch hanging days, any sign you were different here and before you knew it you would have a mob of pitch fork carrying lunatics chasing you through the streets. We kept our heads low as we walked through the town centre. In my perifial vision I could see the curious faces of the towns people inspecting the new comers, women would only glance up because their husbands would pull them further away from us but the men openly scrutinised us. Grey was the favoured colour here for clothes. Grey or brown simple cut clothes. The men wore smart suits and the women dresses or skirts. It was safe to say we stuck out like sore thumbs but it didn't matter because no one suspected anything at the moment. Tugging on Darens arm I moved towards a small food stall, an array of pies, sweet deserts and hot drinks filled the rickety wooden shelves.
"Hello can I help you." The shop keeper asked politely.
"Yes could I have one of those pies please." I said gesturing to a deliceous looking steak and gravy pie. Sliding the pie into a bag he said.
"That will be £1.20 please miss." I reached into my pockets, after searching for a while I pulled out a pound.
"God I dont have enough money, Daren can I borrow twenty pence?" Daren tossed me a twenty pence coin, I held the money out to the shop keeper but he was looking at me like I had two heads.
"Are you ok?" I asked nervously still holding out the coins.
"You used the Lords name in vain!" He screeched so loudly everyone else in the town heard it. All I could see now was a sea of shocked faces then an outburst of whispering acompanied with dissaproving glares. Grabbing my arm Daren swiftly satrted off down the streets. From there on we took back allyways and any snickets we could find but it seemed we now couldn't escape the whispering, it followed where ever we went, it clung to us like a disease. We may as well of had a disease with some of the looks we were recieving. We couldn't outrun the whispers going faster just seemed to make more people whisper and speculate about us.
It was like after the car crash all over again. The whispers. The stares. But when I came back from the car crash most of that came from jelousy of how I looked. Many people didn't believe I had been in a car crash in the first place. Even when they hadn't been whispering about me it felt like they were, I grew slightly paranoid in those first few weeks.
