Y/N was fairly sure that the only person, in the entire castle, who beat him in waking up the following morning was Harry, and even then, it was only by a couple of minutes. Y/N began to stir just as Harry finished buttoning up his robes.
He waited for Y/N to get dressed and they went downstairs to the Common Room where they attempted to get in some last-minute practice on the summoning charm.
'And what if my curse doesn't work?' asked Harry.
'Then fly around it. You only need to get past it, not defeat it,' said Y/N as he stashed loose items behind things in the Common Room to make the summoning that bit tougher.
'Don't think I've ever done anything like outflying a dragon before.'
'No, but you've outflown keys before from what I've heard, and we killed a basilisk.'
'You did that,' said Harry.
'With your sword. Now come on, stop getting distracted or the summoning charm won't work.'
They were at it for about another hour, during which Hermione, Ginny and Ron steadily streamed down into the Common Room, then, when the rest of Gryffindor house seemed to be rousing, the five of them made their way down to breakfast.
Lessons were due to stop at midday to allow time for everyone to gather for the first task. Y/N was surprised that they were going ahead at all, especially as it hindered the last bit of prep that they could do for Harry. And also, because no one bar himself and Hermione were actually paying attention. Though that wasn't new for History of Magic.
Finally, during lunch, Professor McGonagall came hurrying down the Gryffindor table towards them, looking very pale and as though she really didn't want to do what she was about to.
'Potter, the champions have to come down onto the grounds now... You have to get ready for your first task.'
'Okay,' said Harry in a very monotone voice. Y/N figured that he was moving on autopilot at this point, too much fear at what was coming next.
Harry got to his feet and followed Professor McGonagall out of the Great Hall.
'We've done everything we can,' said Hermione as her eyes scanned Y/N's face.
'I know that,' said Y/N, 'but how much can you prepare someone for what he's about to face? Grown wizards have lasted seconds at most against one. Depends on the breeds as well. If they're all facing Welsh Greens or Antipodean Opaleyes, we won't have issues.'
'Which names do we not want to see up there then?' asked Ginny, who was also looking rather pale.
'Pretty much any of the others. Top 2? Peruvian Vipertooth and Hungarian Horntail. If either of those are in there, this could get very bad very quickly.'
It wasn't long after that when Dumbledore got to his feet and instructed all students to head down to the grounds and take their seats to watch the first task. The four of them stood and followed the throng of students almost piling out of the door.
The walk down to the stadium was awkward. Y/N was trying to keep up conversation, but all four of them felt oddly sick and it normally only managed one or two responses before tapering off. Eventually, he gave up and just hoped that Harry would be okay.
Then, they arrived. A tent marked "Champions" was set up right along the outskirts of the forest. They instead followed the mass of people moving towards large stands that had been set up around a dip in the ground, picking up Luna along the way. In that dip was lots of debris, manmade hills, loose objects, and several large eggs in the middle of which nestled a glimmering golden one.
