Alex Cabot POV (Third Person Omniscient)
____________________________________________________________
The team got to the precinct in no time.
They went up to the squad room with the kid still following Alex closely.
The kid was still silent and hadn't said a word since the detectives found them.
"Hey, I think we should get a psych consult. Also, I think might talk to you alone more willingly. You got this?" The detective asked quietly.
"Yeah," Alex answered.
The detectives were taking them to the interview room but when the kid saw the kids' room, they slowly wandered inside and sat down on a chair which was quite small compared to the table near them.
Alex followed in and sat down beside them. The kid looked at her but didn't touch anything.
"Would you like to play with dolls?" Alex smiled warmly.
(The kid was afab. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️Stereotyping is quite annoying. 🙄)
The kid just stared at the pile of cars on the shelf.
Alex followed their gaze and landed on the cars.
"Would you like to play with the cars instead?" She asked instead.
Again, the kid didn't reply and continued to stare at the cars.
Alex took that as a yes and went and grabbed the cars for them.
Hesitantly, the kid took the cars and started to line them up on the edge of the squared table.
Then Olivia walked in and sat down on the opposite side of you and Alex asked, "So, what kind of food do you want?"
The kid shrugged their shoulders and continued to line the cars up.
Olivia got a menu with pictures so they can point at it without talking.
The kid pointed at a sandwich, Alex thanked Olivia and the detective left the room.

On the other side of the mirror, Fin asked, "So, what's going on with the kid?"
Rebecca Hendrix was their psych consult for the day.
"Seems like classic signs of trauma, plus maybe underlying Autism which leads to the possible selective mutism and age regression. Also possible reactive attachment disorder."
"Come again?"
"Autism can lead to selective mutism when under stressful situations. The trauma adds to the situation and leads to age regression. Prolonged trauma can lead to reactive attachment disorder."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"How about you try telling me your name now?"
The kid made a small whimper and murmured "Hugh Kernan."
"Thanks so much, that will help a lot," Alex said, knowing that someone was watching through the window.
Fin scrambled to search on the computers for any information about the kid.
"Got Something!" Fin exclaimed. "Hugh Kernan, 15, abusive father and dead mother. Yeesh, rough life."
"That explains a lot. The lack of acknowledgment of the Autism or repressing its symptoms of it probably is why it is harder for them to trust someone. It took almost 2 hours to get them to just say their name." Rebecca explained.
"Maybe you should go in and lend us your skills"
Rebecca nodded and walked in, "Hi, I'm Dr. Hendricks, I'm a psychiatrist." She said softly.
Hugh pulled away immediately backing into a corner and repeating the words "No doctors, no doctors, no doctors," over and over again while signing simultaneously.
"I think you should leave," Alex whispered.
The doctor walked back out beside Fin, "Well at least we learned something new. They can sign." Rebecca sighed.
Right then Olivia came back with food and saw Hugh in the corner and Alex trying to calm them down.
"What'd you do to them?"
"Nothing! We got their name tho."
"Good, keep searching. I'm going in."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hi guys, I got food."
Hugh looked up, they were famished.
"Should we eat?"
Hugh nodded and immediately started eating when Olivia handed them the sandwich.
Suddenly they stopped, looked at Alex, then ripped a small piece off and handed it to Alex, putting it in her hands.
Surprised, Alex said replied thanks.
"I'm gonna go out for a second ok?"
Hugh's gaze followed her as she walked out.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Fill me in."
"Definitely traumatized, possibly Autistic, possibly have selective mutism, and most likely is in age regression."
"You need a sub, counselor?" Fin asked.
"No, I'm good. I'm gonna go back in."
"Can you subpoena their medical records?"
"Sure. Lemme make a phone call."

AN:
This is just my interpretation of a meltdown. Everyone's symptoms are different. 💙
I am not capable of thinking about how people take care of other people cos I've never experienced it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just researched about ASD vs RAD. While they can both occur at the same time, it is highly unlikely even rare. But they have overlapping symptoms------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
