Alex Cabot POV (Third Person Omniscient)

____________________________________________________________

Alex woke up with a stiff back, she had accidentally fallen asleep against the bed with her arms folded under her head.

Hugh was awake and staring at the blonde.

"Morning. How long have been staring?"

"Just woke up. Didn't want to wake you."

Alex smiled in return.

The ADA was glad that she was building a rapport with the kid.

"Do you want breakfast?"

Hugh nodded.

Out in the bullpen, Olivia was giving the two an update.

"We caught the guy with your help early this morning. But we've got more work to do." the detective said. "We have to prep for trial. You need to go to court so we can put him away in jail."

Hugh looked at the blonde for help.

"Don't worry. We'll be spending a lot of time together."

For the first time, Hugh smiled. They were getting attached to Alex.

The kid and Alex spent a lot of time preparing, the ADA finally gained their trust. Staying at Alex's place throughout the process.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally came the day of the trial.

"Who was the person who kidnapped you?"

"Jim McGee."

"And is he here in the courtroom today?"

"Yes," Hugh said. Pointing at the prep.

"Let the jury know that the victim is indicating the defendant, Jim McGee."

"So... What happened when you ran away from your abusive dad?"

"I was crossing in front of a van in a vacant parking lot when I was pulled from behind..." The kid started tearing up.

"Just focus on me." Alex stood in front of Hugh blocking their view of the defendant.

"... I think I was hit behind the head... Umm... Next thing I knew... I was chained to the wall in the basement..." On edged, the kid spewed her trauma painfully for the whole court to hear.

"You did great, thank you."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was time for the defendant's counsel, James Norberg, to cross-examine.

"Would you say Jim fed you and clothed you?"

"Yes."

"And would you say that is the act of any good parent?"

"Yes."

"Did he hit you or yell at you?"

"No."

Hugh answered yes and no as Alex had taught them to.

"Then would you say Jim was protecting you?"

The kid started wailing loudly, their face in their hands.

"Objection!"

"Withdrawn. No further questions."

"Would you like a break, Ms. Kernan?" The judge asked.

The kid nodded.

"We will have a short recess and resume in the afternoon."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They left the courthouse and got back to the DA's office.

Alex hugged Hugh tightly as they sobbed into the blonde's shoulder.

"It's okay. He can't hurt you anymore. I'll redirect this afternoon and save the case."

"I'm scared." Hugh finally let out.

"Don't worry, you got this."

"What about afterward? What will happen then?"

"Oh, you mean where will you go? I don't know, I'm sorry. Let's just focus on the trial for now."

"Ok..." The kid continued crying in Alex's arms.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Ms. Kernan, is it true that the defendant used words that were emotionally and mentally manipulative?"

"Yes."

"People's exhibit A, a scientific report on how manipulation can affect a person's emotional and mental state and a manipulated person is unable to think independently and critically. Added to the victim's pre-existing conditions and prolonged trauma, they were easily manipulated to do something they didn't want. In conclusion, they were not able to consent to anything."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hugh and Olivia were waiting outside the courtroom for the verdict.

"Hi, the jury voted Jim to be guilty. Sentencing will be tomorrow for the heinous crime."

"Thanks, so much." Hugh smiled widely.

"I have a surprise for you."

The kid stared wide-eyed at the blonde.

"What is it? Don't keep us waiting!" Olivia exclaimed.

"I was wondering if you would let me adopt you."

Both the detective and the ADA, looked at Hugh in anticipation, watching them process the information.

"Yes!" They jumped up into Alex's arms, hugging her tightly, initiating a hug for the first time.

Alex was surprised and hugged them back.

The adoption process was not hard. Between the abusive dad and the dead mum, there was no one else.
