Hugh Kernan POV (Third Person Omniscient)
____________________________________________________________
The boys were at it again, they were loud, obnoxious, and definitely not listening to the teacher.
Hugh was annoyed at the fact that they were too loud and they couldn't pay attention to the lesson.
People were out of their seats and talking loudly.
Everything was in chaos and everything was so loud, the teacher finally snapped.
"QUIET! EVERYONE BACK TO THEIR SEATS!" the loud voice boomed in the classroom.
Hugh didn't like the yelling, they feel threatened. Their brain told them that they were in danger.
They were instantly brought back to times like when their biological dad was yelling and threatening them over accidental split milk and broken cup on the ground.
Nothing was safe, nothing was ever safe.
The classroom was now back in order and quiet, the teacher was now giving a lecture on respecting their learning in a proper learning environment.
Still, the kid was still in an emotional flashback and nothing around them felt real, everything was fuzzy. They didn't like it, the teacher's voice drowned out into the background. The room was cramped, the windows were closed, the heat was cranked up high, it felt suffocating.
Hazily, Hugh rushed out of the classroom.
The teacher was confused and wanted to go after them, but he had a Math class to teach, so he got the teacher who was organizing their drawers in the next room.
That particular teacher happened to be Ms. Slyvia Taylor.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hugh found a space to hide away from anyone, making them hard to find.
Ms. Taylor looked everywhere but she couldn't find the kid.
Defeated, the teacher called Alex to come to the school and find the best way to help the kid.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Alex Cabot, parent of Hugh Kernan." The ADA dressed in her court clothes told the person at the office front desk.
"Ms. Taylor," The teacher stood up by a nearby couch. "Ms. Cabot I called you because I was wondering if you could help me find Hugh and calm them down."
"You mean you lost them?"
"Yes, I'm very sorry."
"Yeah okay, Hugh is a bit skittish, don't worry they trust me, I can definitely get through to them."
"Let's start with any dark quiet space in the school."
"Um, there are quite a few, there are the wings of the hall and the staircase that no one ever uses..."
"Let's start with the wings of the hall" Alex suggested.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They were at the door to the hall but it was locked shut.
They could hear the laughter and conversations coming from the inside, seems like there was a class occurring in the hall.
"Huh, that's weird the doors to the hall are locked, it is never locked."
Alex looked around at the dimly lit passage to the hall, there were a few unused whiteboards stored in the corner.
The blonde walked closer toward the corner to take a look and saw a pair of feet slightly sticking out from underneath.
She kneeled down on the floor which was not easy to do in heels and saw a terrified face of Hugh.
"I found Hugh" Alex said as the teacher fumbled with trying to unlock the doors with her keys. "I'll take it from here, thanks, Ms. Taylor."
The teacher nodded and walked away.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ADA took off her uncomfortable heels and slowly crept forward to sit beside the kid.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
The kid only hid further away in themselves, like anything from the outside could hurt them.
"Hey, it's me, Alex," The blonde said.
Hugh cautiously looked up at her face, their glassy eyes looked like they were confused about where they were.
"We're at school remember?" Alex smiled warmly.
"Yelling," The kid choked out as they covered their ears.
Alex looked around in the quiet hallway, "Where, who's yelling?" she asked.
"Dad... yelling and screaming..." they stuttered.
She could see the pain in their face, and once again she asked herself 'What did that monster do to them?'
"Hey, you're safe here, no one's going to hurt you. Here hold my hand," The blonde said trying to help them ground themself.
Shakily the kid reached their hand out to grab hers.
The glassy-eyed expression, the labored breathing, Alex had seen all the signs in her line of work.
They were deathly afraid of their biological dad's threats becoming reality. The multiple times he had threatened them were not only when he was angry, but it was also times when he was completely calm.
Their eyes were glazed over like there was a raging storm behind them.
Curled up in the corner, the kid retreated into themselves.
"Squeeze my hand if you need to, I won't mind a bit." the ADA said.
After another long moment of silence, "Would you like to go to the washroom to splash some water on your face?" she asked.
Hugh nodded their head and slowly stood up and walked towards the washroom.
Coming out of the washroom with cold water dripping down their chin, the kid finally looked like the storm had subsided.
"Let's go home okay?" The blonde asked even tho it was the middle of the school day.
"Okay," the kid answered quietly.
