Hugh Kernan POV (Third Person Omniscient)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hugh jolted awake, panting.

The nightmare they just had was absolutely terrifying, making them feel hot in the cold winter air.

Quite aware of their every sensation, they felt their throat insanely dry but their body felt sweaty. As they felt their favorite refused-to-go-to-sleep-without-it pillow softly brushing up against their cheek, they let out a tiny sigh and steadied their breath.

They knew that they weren't physically in danger but their nervous system had been kicked on.

Making sure the wall of pillows was still surrounding them, they laid as still as possible and fought to stay awake wishing they won't fall asleep and plunge into the same nightmare again.

Since being rescued from the dark basement, they never felt safe especially when it was night and sleeping peacefully was a challenge.

They laid there in silence for a bit, their eyelids felt so heavy as they drooped down.

Since the adoption, Alex had shown them nothing but kindness and they didn't know how to respond to it when for her whole life they felt like no one actually cared for them.

Still, in terrible fear, they contemplated going to Alex for comfort.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the fear didn't resolve, they mentally prepared themselves, clutched their favorite pillow and quickly slipped into the nearby washroom, and flocked on the light as rapidly as possible.

They got themselves a drink from the tap, trying to soothe their dry throat.

The water didn't help the dry throat much but it calmed the nervous system down a little bit.

They returned to the bedroom but contemplated going to Alex for comfort again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, they gave in and slowly crept toward Alex's bedroom, their feet padded against the hardwood floor, still clutching the pillow.

Slowly, they pushed the door open, trying not to make any sound as they walked in.

Alex wasn't woken up by their entrance and was still fast asleep.

The kid gently poked at the blonde's shoulder under the cover.

"What's wrong?" Alex asked still groggy from sleep, a little bit alarmed.

"What?" Hugh replied defensively and winced as they realized that it was a little bit too loud.

The blonde moved over to make space for the kid to lay down.

Quietly, they laid down, again as still as possible, clutching their pillow.

There wasn't another word coming from the kid.

Alex was thoroughly confused by this gesture as they had never acted this way before. They usually weren't this trusting, something really bad must've happened to them to act this way.

Not pressing for further information, the parental figure closed the gap between the two, wrapping her arms around them, and laid there staring at them hoping that everything was okay.
