Flashback

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hi. Morning Amelia!" Hugh said cheerfully.

Amelia Davey was Hugh's best friend in Grade 5. She was taller and prettier than them.

"Hi." She replied blankly.

"How's it going?" They asked the group of friends who Amelia was talking to before the kid came in.

"Fine," Amelia answered with a forced smile as she started to move away and their friend group followed behind her.

Once again, Hugh was thoroughly confused by the behavior that they were showing. Amelia and the kid had just had a great time talking on the phone the day before.

As the teacher walked in all the students quickly got to their seats to greet the teacher.

It was not the first time that they ignored them for no reason at all but Hugh still scrambled through all the potential things that they might have said or done to offend the friend group, mostly Amelia.

Usually, the friend group (including Hugh) follows Amelia around and almost always does what she says. Amelia was obviously the leader of the friend group.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the day went on, the friend group still stayed away from Hugh but because of the small classroom they were in, the kid could hear all the mean things and jokes that the friend group was talking behind their back with the lead of Amelia.

It was Science class when the teacher told the class to pair up into groups of four.

Amelia quickly excluded Hugh and picked the others over Hugh where usually she would pick them as a teammate first.

As the kid joined another group of classmates that they normally don't converse with, they felt lonely and excluded.

The kid's mind was occupied with thoughts of pain/ guilt, what they were guilty of, they didn't know, there should be nothing to be guilty of, but they didn't realize that. Blaming themselves for things they didn't do or things that were not their fault.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But the next day, everything was back to normal and Amelia was talking to Hugh again.

Hugh was sick of the toying but had no choice but to stick with the friend group since the kid was not friends with anyone else in the class.

This pattern would go on for each friend in the friend group. Hugh didn't like it but to keep staying friends with Amelia, they had to follow her lead.

No one else recognizes the pattern, everyone in the friend group would always defend Amelia every time Hugh tried to talk to them about it.

This would go on for years until Hugh left the school.

And it is only a partial memory of their ex-best friend.

AN:

I know this scenario sounds weird and hard to believe but it is based on real-life experience.

A bit less detailed cause it's a memory but hope you enjoy flashback stories :)
