It's hard being a single parent, but it's really fun and fulfilling.

Alex had adopted Hugh for 2 months now. And the kid was now more comfortable with the presence of Alex and started talking to the parental figure tho they were still shy and untrusting towards others except for the squad. Hugh still had panic attacks and mental breakdowns from their trauma and was emotionally fragile. At an early age, Hugh learned to mask it, they never showed it to anyone other than Alex and Olivia. The kid still said very little but was more open to Alex.

It was Friday morning, and Alex had to go to work that day but since the adoption, she want Hugh to feel loved so she made a simple breakfast every day.

Hugh walked down to the kitchen and settled at the island.

"Morning. Did you sleep well?" Alex asked sliding the plate of breakfast towards them.

"Yeah. How 'bout you?" Hugh replied, quietly eating her breakfast sitting across from the ADA.

"Good." Alex smiled.

The ADA hadn't gotten Hugh into a school yet, she wanted the kid to recover from the trauma first and settle down for their new life. (Nobody ever recovers from emotional/psychological trauma, it's just a saying. Idk how to word it...)

To Hugh it was just another living situation that they had to adapt to, they learned from an early age to never get comfortable with anything as they knew that things always change for them.

But this time it felt different, Alex really cared about them. (Plus they were adopted)

"I wanted to talk to you about something." She said after a while.

"Yeah?"

"I'm going to enroll you in a school. I have a few choices for you. If you want to check them out, I can look over them with you. What do you think?"

The kid kept quiet, "I don't know..."

Hugh was always the loner at school, everyone knew about their life story, about the abusive dad and the dead mum, and the few friends they had were manipulative and mean. But it seemed so long ago.

"Why is that?" Alex asked, slightly smiling, trying to show that she was concerned and not angry with them.

"Hmm... I don't want to talk about it..." With that Hugh lowered their head and started sobbing, still emotionally unstable.

Alex rushed over to hug them, "It's okay, baby... I'm sorry for pushing you. We can talk about it when you're ready..."

After a while, the ADA successfully calmed them down.

"I need to go to work. You okay to stay here alone or do you want me to call Liv to come over or you can go to the precinct?" (Kids over 12 can stay home alone)

The other person Hugh trusted the most (other than Alex) was Olivia, after all, she was the one who first found her, and being the other woman in the squad, they felt more comfortable with her.

"I...I can stay here." The kids smiled slightly.

"Okay. Go to the precinct if you need it. Love you." Alex kissed their cheek and left.

Knowing that most of the time Alex herself was there too, she wasn't worried.

They had gone over the rough patch of time when Hugh constantly had panic attacks and was scared of abandonment.

Hugh deadbolted the door after she left. After the incident, they were on high alert all time.
