It's been a week since Alex and Hugh last talked about enrolling in a school.
The two were eating dinner when the ADA brought it up again.
"So... I want to talk about enrolling you in a school again if you're up to it."
"Sure."
There was a bit of silence.
"I want you to know that you're safe here and I won't be mad at you at all."
"Ok..." Slowly poking at their dinner.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Ok."
Alex waited, letting them go at their own pace.
"Hmmm... The last time I was in school... I was... 13... I was... a loner... My friends... They were mean and manipulative... I don't want to talk about it..." They stationed their arms above their heads like always when their anxiety's high and stressed, starting to get uncomfortable.
"Ok ok, we'll stop," Alex said kindly. "I think this time will be different. I will get you to a better school with better accommodations and better staff and students." (Cause Alex is rich)
"Different... Different... That's what they all say..." The kid whispered.
Knowing that Hugh had been in many schools since CPS showed up, she tried to think of something to comfort them.
"I know baby. But I promise this time will be different. Are you willing to try?"
"Maybe..." Hugh started rocking their body back and forth.
"How about we can go check out the schools in person?"
"If you say so."
"You don't have to if you don't want to. It's not mandatory." Alex moved towards the kid to hug them.
"Ok." Hugh trusted Alex, she had been so kind to them.
"Why are you being so nice to me?" Hugh asked after a while still don't understand the compassion she was showing and probably never will.
Alex was surprised by the question.
"Because you deserve it, baby."
"Why?"
"Because that's what a parent figure does." As the ADA held the kid tightly in her arms.
"Okay..."
Seeing that the kid was clearly upset, Alex asked, "Do you want to call it a night for now?"
The kid nodded.
Alex let them go to their room and cleaned up the unfinished dinner.
