Estela POV:
Bored, I sat on the counter since my shift was done and Jake had texted me to wait. My time had been spent texting Melissa, looking at memes on Instagram, and hiding from the rich snobs every 2 minutes.
"Madame. You shouldn't be sitting on the counter. It's indecent." My head lifted as I caught sight of the slightly older lady who looked like she could afford her own restaurant.
"Do you work here?", I asked her as I placed my phone on the counter top. "No." "I do. So please." With one hand I gestured for her to return to her seat and somewhat annoyed, I slid down from the counter as the Spaniard had entered.
The lady didn't like me at all and recognized Jake, "Tell your mother to stop hiring rude teenagers." She turned to Jake and then pointed at me.
Jake seemed a little confused at first, until he nodded kindly and pretended to her that he would be interested. "I will." He smiled cutely at her and as she moved away from us, he looked at me with raised eyebrows.
"I wasn't that rude. Maybe a little, but not bad. She'll be fine." I innocently wrapped my arms around his stomach as he spread his arms a bit and we headed right back toward the exit after our greeting.
"She'll forget about it by tomorrow at the latest anyway," it came from him before I disappeared into his car and waited dutifully for him.
While Jake fastened his seat belt and started the engine, I briefly glanced in the rearview mirror until it occurred to me that I actually wanted to ask him something.
"Why didn't you come until now, anyway?" As he put on his blinker and waited for the road to clear, he glanced at me, a curly strand hanging slightly over his left eye. "Didn't want to miss Aleyshia and Heeseung's break-up."
I nearly choked on the molecules I inhaled, and in surprise I held onto my seatbelt. "They broke up?" My new best friend nodded, trying to hide the fact that he found it very amusing.
"She told him she's not over her ex and everything is moving too fast for her. I'll tell you one thing. She can lie." Without understanding, I stared at Number 81's side profile as he refocused on the road and kept tightening and relaxing his jaw.
"That's exactly why you didn't want me to come to the track today." The Spaniard nodded and brushed back his hair. "You probably still would have comforted that idiot." "Don't call him that. His heart was broken."
I could see Jake rolling his eyes and shrugging his shoulders. He apparently wasn't a big fan of the fact that I still cared about Heeseung. "Better broken than thrown on the ground and stomped on." He licked his lower lip and pressed down on the gas pedal slightly. "So is yours..."
I swallowed and turned away from him slightly. "I'm sorry," it came out of my mouth suddenly then, and I saw Jake turn to me, confused and puzzled. "Why are you apologizing now?"
I took a deep breath in and out, rubbing my forehead and pushing the few tears that had formed in my eyes back into my tear ducts. I stared at my sneakers as I tried to sort out my words, which were floating around in my head. I had no idea why I had apologized.
