Chapter 8

It's been a couple of weeks since we've been here. Today we were going to learn how to ride ilus. As he shouted for some ilus, Aonung made a clicking noise. One of them came to me and she was quite gorgeous. He glanced at me and said, "These are ilu, if you want to live here you have to ride." Among all of us, Lo'ak was the first to try, and he succeeds in forming a connection with the ilu. These creatures different from the ones I'm used to. To avoid having to kill Lo'ak during the binding process, Tsireya informed Lo'ak that there was no need to tie his mouth shut. When Tsireya was assisting Lo'ak and Aonung was with Neteyam, I went with Tuk for the time being. One ilu was standing next to tuk and it was circling tuk to show that she loved her. As I heard my younger sister say that, a smile emerged on my face. she said, "I love her already," as she smiled and radiated beauty. I noticed Lo'ak beginning to swim with the Ilu as I was looking in the area. He lost his footing on the ilu as it began to speed. I overheard Aonung laughing loudly and smirking with the other metkayina teens as I was about to head to Lo'ak. I then turned to face Aonung, who'd been staring at me. He could tell I was annoyed since I gave him such a filthy look. My brother Neteyam stopped me as I was making my way to Aonung and put his hand on my shoulder while telling me they weren't worth it. I heard Tsreiya tell them to "cut it out" as they stopped as I took a step back. I smiled in reply as Tsireya approached me and said she would handle them.

Tsireya advised in her clam voice, "breathe in." Tsireya taught us how to manage our breathing and remain underwater. With Roxto, we were all seated in a circle. She inhaled deeply before saying, "then breathe out." When she got close to Lo'ak, his heartbeat quickened. She remarked, "Lo'ak, your heartbeat is quick." I need you to concentrate, she added. I smiled at Neteyam, and he returned the smile as we both tried not to chuckle.

I loved the ocean. but not as much as I love the forest. The longer we stay here, the more I miss it. My siblings do, although not to the same extent that I do. To me, it meant everything. I miss climbing trees, enjoying the rain and the scent of the forest, as well as the grass and everything else. Here, everything is different. I occasionally found myself wondering if we were ever going to return home when I stare at the stars at night.

We took a break from swimming and sat in the sand while I and Lo'ak were swimming. "Hey Lo'ak," I said. "Yeah," he replied. "You should tell Tsireya how much you love her," I advised. "I'm not sure what you're talking about," he said. "You really can't hide your feelings from me lo'ak," I laughed. "okay fine.. Well how, are you sure she likes me back?" he asked, smiling. Oh lo'ak, I thought, he's really clueless. "Trust me, Lo'ak, she really loves you," I said, smiling. I noticed some guys picking on Kiri as we talked. When Lo'ak saw my face, he knew something was wrong. I then pointed to what was going on, and both of us walked in that direction. I was furious about what they were doing. Kiri was standing in the water with Aonung, Roxto, and a couple of other guys. The expression on my sister's face told me she was terrified. "HEY!" shouted They were all staring at me and lo'ak. "Back off fish lips," Lo'ak said. "Look, another four-fingered freak." "And there's baby tails," said Roxto. I pushed him as he approached Lo'ak tail, and he backed off. "Don't touch my brother," I said, my eyes red with rage. Then, before I could do anything else, Aonung kept touching Kiri's tail. Neteyam showed up. He then shoved Aonung to the side and said "You heard what she said. "leave them alone" neteyam said in a low tone of voice. "Back off now," he said, his teeth clenched. They exchanged glances for a few seconds before backing up. "smart choise," Neteyam said as he watched them move. "And from now on, you respect my sisters," he said, demandingly and bluntly. Neteyam then returned our gaze to ensure that we were all right. "You okay, Kiri?" I asked as my silbings and I walked away from them. She made a nod. I then noticed Lo'ak stopped walking when he heard the Metkayina boys say, "Look, they're all freaks, the whole family," as they were laughing." lo'ak.." I now stated;. "I got this sis," he said, and I looked at Neteyam, knowing exactly what he was going to do. "I know this hand is funny. Look at me, I'm a freak "Lo'ak said as he raised his hand. "Ailen" He shrugged, causing the others to giggle. "But I can do something really cool watch," Lo'ak said, closing his fist with his other hand. Then Lo'ak threw his fist across his body, knocking Aonung to the ground. "It's called a punch bitch," Lo'ak stated. "Don't ever touch my sisters again" Lo'ak stated. Then one of Aonung friends helped him get up, and I joined the fight the moment I saw one of them touch my brother. "Fuck off you fish," I yelled before punching one of the boys across the face. Then one of the other boys began to pull lo'ak tails, and Neteyam joined the fight to assist us. Then one of the boys shoved me, knocking me to the ground, and I got up and punched him in the stomach. Then, as we were fighting, I heard my sister Kiri tell us to stop, but we didn't. I turned to face Neteyam, who had come to my guidance and kicked the boy down. The boy then stood up, with the assistance of his friend, and punched me across the cheek, causing me to bleed. I then punched one of the boys in the face several times, while Neteyam punched the other boy who had hit me. "You bitch," I said as I punched him. Kiri then began to laugh.
