Chapter 2: The Attack

Mey looked up into the sky and saw that the sun had now passed over her. She knew she would lose track of time while reading. However, she decided to stay longer as she did not need to be back at the palace until unset. She looked over the edge of the cliff to see Onyx zipping up and down the beach chasing birds and splashing in the water. She smiled softly then continued reading. She was so intrigued by the writings that she failed to hear the footsteps of someone approaching her. Hands then slipped over her eyes blacking out all matter of light.

    "Guess who?" That accent. That deep voice. She would recognize it anywhere. She smiled and placed her hands on the ones covering hers.

    "Hello, Felix." She removed the hands from her eyes to look up and see a smiling face and a pair of sparkling blue eyes slightly hidden by blonde bangs.

    "You have been gone all morning; I wanted to make sure you were alright." Felix sat down beside her and fixed her braid. Mey softly smiled at him before looking out to the sea.

    "I'm alright. I honestly did not expect to be out here as long as I have been." She looked around confused then back at Felix. "And how did you get up here without my notice.?" Felix smiled playfully then laid on the ground.

    "Sister, you are sitting on a cliff side facing the sea and reading..." Felix glanced at her book, "... 'Myths and Legends of the Sea'. It's not that hard to sneak up on you. Plus, you know how quiet Domino is." Mey gave a defeated sigh and closed her book. Felix may not be her brother by blood, but he was the closest to blood she had. Since the day her mother and father took him in as their own, Mey and Felix became inseparable. He found all of her favorite things and knew what buttons to press, and Mey did the same. As Mey looked out over the sea once more, Felix watched curiously. He became worried like he would lose her soon, and he hated that feeling. "What's on your mind?" Mey eventually looked over at her brother.

    "I heard the voice again. The same one I have heard all these years, calling to me, telling me to come and find them."

    "It's just the wind, Mey. I always tell you this." Mey looked back towards the sea.

    "Then how come it feels and sounds so real?" Felix sighed then stood to his feet.

    "Come on." He stretched out his hand to which Mey just looked at him confusingly. 

    "Just what are you planning?" Mey took his hand and stood to her feet before Felix threw a sheathed cutlass at her.

    "Training to keep your mind off of things for now. You have missed multiple sessions so you are due for one." Mey smirked and unsheathed the cutlass.

    "Knowing you, you won't go easy on me." Felix smirked back.

    "And why should I?" With that, Felix charged his sister who blocked his attack with one swing. "There's no need for me to go easy."

    The sun began to set when Mey and Felix arrived back at the stables. They put their horses in their stalls and began to remove the equipment. As they began to groom, Mey's mind began to wander back to the voice she heard earlier that day. Why was it on her mind so much today? She always heard it when she went up to the cliff side, but why today of all days? Felix brought her back to reality when he poked her cheek.

    "You were in a daze again. You want me to help you finish?" Mey shook her head.

    "No, you head up; I'll be there shortly." As Felix began to head up, cannon fire was then heard near port. Both Onyx and Domino reared in their stalls causing Mey to try and calm them both down since their stalls were next to each other. Felix ran back as quick as he could to grab her and run back to the castle.

    "Gather as many people as you can and lead them back to the castle. I will start at the port!" Mey yelled. Felix grabbed onto her arm before she could get away.

    "No, you are not going down there. It is dangerous. The soldiers can handle it."  Felix replied. Another sound of cannon fire was then heard causing them to both to look in the direction of the port. Mey then looked back at Felix.

    "I am still older than you, Felix, and the future queen. And the future queen would not let her people fend for themselves. I have my cutlass; I can fight back. Now let me go and do as I asked." Felix instead brought her into a hug.

    "Be careful, Mey." Mey quickly smiled, pulled away from the hug, and began to run down towards the port. There in the bay sat a massive ship still firing on the port and surrounding houses. There was only one ship with one captain that was that size and that daring to take on Barranor alone. And that was the REVENGE commanded by the ruthless Captain Yang. Mey gulped as she continue to run trying to avoid the massive amounts of people trying to run towards the castle. Soldiers and residents were already lying dead or near dying in the streets. Multiple boats were making their way to the port at Barranor coming from the REVENGE, and some were already there. Mey stopped to look around for any signs of a pirate from the ship, and unfortunately, she was in luck. A pirate has trapped a female resident underneath him near a small stable. Her screams were loud and terrifying. Without a second thought, Mey quickly ran for him jumping on his back and tousled him to the ground. Mey nodded to the female to run then pointed her cutlass directly at the pirate's throat. When the pirate came to his scenes and saw the point at his throat, he gave a devilish grin that made Mey angry and uncomfortable.

    "Wipe that smug look off of your face, filthy pirate, or I will do it for you."

    "I see we have a tough one here. Why don't you and I have a bit of fun." Mey leaned the cutlass further into his neck causing a bit of blood to ooze out.

    "Fun is not the word I would give it." The pirate's grin then disappeared from his face when he saw a faint glow reflect in her eyes, but it reappeared when he saw who was now making their way towards him. Before Mey could say another word, she felt the point of cold steel against her throat.

    "Drop your sword or you will drop with it." Mey never once took her eyes off the pirate on the ground.

    "It's a cutlass you filthy..." Mey's vision then blackened as she fell to the ground from being hit on the head with a heavy object. The one who hit her was about to run his sword through when the pirate on the ground quickly stood to his feet and stopped him.

    "Do not kill her, quartermaster. The captain will want this one alive." The quartermaster smirked then sheathed his sword before turning to the tall, brown-haired boy next to him.

    "Take her to the captain, Yunho. We will have our way with her once he's done." The quartermaster and pirate both let out bellowing laughs and began to make their way up town leaving Yunho to gather up Mey. As Yunho bent down to pick her up, he took in her features and was taken aback. This couldn't possibly be the girl his friend described from all those years ago, could it? Yunho then noticed her necklace and a look of worry entered his serious eyes. Indeed, this could be the one his captain had been searching for since his father's death. Yunho then gathered her up in his arms, hoping she wouldn't wake up to the horror she was about to face.
