I am Forgotten

CHAPTER 3: CONFESSIONS

The room was dark and quiet. I heard crying coming from the direction behind me. A little girl sat there crying. She was crying because of the school bullies. Another little girl comes and chases them away and comforts the other girl. Wait, that's me comforting her.

The little girl that was getting bullied was Eva. I remember this. We were both 10 years old when I became friends with her. I wish she remembered that it was me. I hear growling behind me. A jackal was there and I was in the woods.

I then see the two girls in the forest playing with each other. The jackal pounces on the girl that looked like me and she told the other girl to run. The other girl that looked like Eva ran away. I don't remember this at all. The jackal then spotted me with blood on its jaw. It growls and pounces on me.

"Gah" I woke up breathing heavily. Iris wakes up and asks "Had another nightmare?" I rub my face and answer "Y-yeah." Iris then asked "What was it this time?" I didn't speak for a few seconds and then replied "It's complicated." Iris responded "It's about everything before the 'No one remembers what happened' thing again, isn't it?"

I didn't need to answer that one. Iris was the only I told my secret to. Somehow, she can read minds. I did remember seeing her at the lab once. Though that time, her eyes were gold instead of brown. I'm the only one that remembers this whole thing.

And I haven't seen my abilities work in 5 years since that time. Though, Iris still being alive is a mystery to me. Everyone that was on those buses, died. They died because of me and my stupidity. Iris is the only one I can share these thoughts with. Even though I feel like it's not the right thing to do.

Iris then spoke "I thought you'd realize by now I can read everything. I'm not even sure how I got it either because I can't remember a damn thing about any of that. You have to be at least be in another room so that I can't read your thoughts." I replied "Okay, okay. I'll go back to sleep now." I go back to sleep. I wake up, think that I was going to be late. I checked the time and I was.

I rush to get ready and then Iris wakes up. "Why are you up so early?" I reply "Because we're going to be late." Iris looked at me with a tired face and said "It's a Saturday." I realize it was a Saturday. "Oh yeah."

I still get dressed and ready for the outing with Eva. I tried to keep it casual as possible. I eat breakfast then brush my teeth. I made sure I showered before I went out. I walk out of the building and start walking. I go to the florist and buy her favourite flowers.

I start walking to the place where Eva said she'd meet me. "Alright Nicolas, you can do this. Tell her before it's too late. Take a deep breathe." I talked to myself and breathed in and out slowly. I arrive at the park with a nervous smile on my face. I spot Eva so I walk towards her. I noticed she was talking to someone.

I stopped walking when I saw her kiss the man. I froze on the spot, dropping the flowers on the ground. I started to tear up when Eva spotted me. I ran away so she didn't have to see me cry. I heard her shout "Nicolas! Wait! Don't go!" I hid near an ally and just sat down.

I tried breathing to calm myself down but my throat felt blocked. Tears were running down my cheeks. I could feel my face getting red, but I didn't care. After all this time, I really thought that we'd be together. But it was just me who fell for her.

I received 7 missed calls from Eva. I just sat there, ignoring my phone and just listening to people talk about different topics near the ally. I was still hiding, not making a sound so that no one notices me. I stopped crying and calmed down. All of a sudden, I hear Eva running in the ally. I tried to keep quiet, listening to Eva call my name.

I heard laughter coming from the opposite direction. Two men started snickering. "What's wrong princess? Are you lost?" We can help you find your way." the one man said. Eva replied "I can find my own way around, but thanks for offering." The two men revealed the weapons behind their backs. Eva's eyes opened and she tried to run but failed.

She was out-numbered. I felt something change, like how I used to feel when I had my powers. I jump out of hiding and attack the two men. They got scared and ran away. Eva, in the corner, stared at me. She looked frightened.

I felt weak and transformed back into my human form. I felt like I transformed into a monster, because I couldn't feel anything on me. "Nicolas?" I heard Eva speak. I lost consciousness and fell on the ground. I wake up in Eva's house, on the couch. "Argh, my head" I said painfully.

Eva came out of the bedroom and saw I was awake. "Are you feeling okay?" she asked. I realize that a blanket was covering me and I get a bit frightened. She sat down next to me, giving me a cup of coffee. I blew into it and held the blanket close to me. She looked at me, her face telling me she wanted answers.

I breathe slowly and heavily, shaking. She broke the silence "You saved me..." I reply a few seconds later "You're not gonna ask about my ability?" She looked at me then took a deep breathe, saying "I do but I'm not sure if I should or not. I'm more worried about what happened at the park." I stay silent for a bit. "I saw the flowers on the ground. The only reason why you would get me my favourite kind is because you like me. And I didn't realize that." I look away slowly, still silent.

"You need to talk to me..." she continued. "I-I-I-" I stuttered. "Who was that guy that you kissed?" Eva looked down "That was Eric. He found me in the park, and he confessed his feelings to me. He then kissed me. I felt like I liked him so I kissed him back. I do like you and that's why I called you to the park." I commented with my face darkened "So I'll always be your plan B if things don't work out, huh?" Eva looked at me and said "What are you talking about?"

I replied while standing up, still using the blanket to cover myself "You wouldn't believe me but everyone forgot their memories of me, and what actually happened. We live in this perfect world and no one knows that the main reason why so many people died was because of a mutant apocalypse! You and I survived with a few other people and we became an item! I knew you since we were ten years old! But you won't remember any of this because- because the world reset." Eva looked at me with shock. She saw my facial expression was serious. "That explains the powers. I'm really sorry." Eva said. "Where did you put my spare clothes that I left behind?" I asked. "In the draw to your left in the bedroom." she replied.

I walk in the bedroom and close the door. I get dressed and walk out. I gathered all my things and left the house. Eva didn't stop me...
