CHAPTER 15: SPY WORK

The next morning, I came to visit Ms. James and her face was stressed. "Is everything okay?" She replied, sitting down "It's about Evelyn. She's not here..." My eyes widen as I speak "What do you mean she's not here? What happened?" She looked at me with panicked eyes and spoke "Someone disguised as one of our staff and took Evelyn. I checked on the security cameras but I couldn't trace who the person was. I've never seen him before and I don't remember giving him the job."

"When did this happen?" I raised my voice. She looked at me in disappointment and replied "Midnight..." She showed me the cameras and I recognized the man's face. I step back. "Alex...I need to tell Frank that Alex isn't with us." Ms. James looks at me and speaks in concern "He has been working for you? Nicolas, you need to be careful. Whoever he's working for, he's taken Evelyn. That's a warning I can see. How did I not sense this danger before? Thought we need to be careful. We don't know him well so we'll need to stay put and collect more information about him."

"You're saying I need to sit and wait before something happens to her? I'm not going to let her get hurt!" I try to walk out but Ms. James holds my arm. "Ms. James. All do respect. I know you don't want any more people getting hurt, but I need to do something about it." I yank my arm but she won't let go. She went down on the ground. I was surprised by this.

"You remind me a lot about my sister. She always wants to protect the people she loved. But I couldn't protect her. I don't want to see the same thing again." I sat down with her. "Alright, I will wait. But that doesn't mean I'm going to mess around with time. We need to figure out what Alex is up to." I help her up and she replies "Of course Nicolas." I added "You don't have to call me Nicolas the whole time. Maybe try Nic."

She replied "Well, then I suppose you can also call me by my name. It's Hanneli." I respond "I see you're Afrikaans. Nice." She snapped her fingers. "We shouldn't waste any time." I focus back on reality. "Right. So, what are you planning to do?" She replied "How would you like being undercover for me?"

Later that day, I worked hard, still worried about Eva. I did spot Clare deliver some equipment that looked like tubes. I found it suspicious. She didn't see me because I was wearing a lab suit. I decided to pretend to work for her. It was easy because the other workers wore the same suits.

I stayed with the other workers as I examined the lab. I then see Alex walk up to Clare. What is Alex doing here? I walk near them, placing a tiny mic in hiding, to hear their conversation. I then catch up with the other workers. I start listening to the conversation in my ear piece.

"Alex, do you have our test subject?" Clare asked him. "Yes, I have her. After you've set up, I'll bring her to you." Clare then shoves him. "Not so loud you idiot! Someone might hear us." she said in a low voice. I couldn't believe what I heard. Is it possible that they have Eva?

I need to be very careful not to blow my cover. I spot Alex leaving and Clare looks around. I then take the mic back when no one is looking. I head back to the other workers. I leave that section and head to the locker room where the other suits are. I take off the suit and head to Ms. James at her office.

I told her what I heard and she responds "I see. Well, Clare doesn't know that there's you spying on her. You will continue to see what she's up to. I will let Frank keep an eye on Alex. If Clare really has Eva, you must bring her back. If she has someone else, she will get arrested either way. I trust you on this mission."
