Around three in the morning, something licked Sonic's face when he woke up. Ugh Annie can you stop? Sonic thought sleepily. When he was half awake, he spotted a normal sized Nightmare in front of him, causing him to freak out. "How did you get in here?!" he shouted. He was worrying that the whole university would hear him, and that would not be good. He wasn't ready to reveal his dark side just yet. The Nightmare yapped something, as telling Sonic that he must of summoned it during the night. So I can summon spawn here, Sonic thought. He wasn't even shocked. He was Dark Gaia after all.
He patted the spawn before it disappeared, and Sonic went back to sleep, his patterns still glowing in the moonlight. That next morning when he woke up, the patterns that once were on him had vanished, telling Sonic that they only show up at night. He still remembered the Nightmare that greeted him at three in the morning. How Sonic summoned it during the middle of the night he had no clue. He still had some time to chill out, so that's what he did. It was only his second day back. There was so much he had to see.
Annabelle greeted Sonic that morning and sat next to him. She was happy to see him home. "Tails is doing some research on this crater that showed up when you disappeared," Annabelle explained. "I was wondering if you would like to check it out." Sonic tilted his head by crater. He didn't even remember a crater appearing when he was underground for all those years, yet he always wondered where those agents came from. That must of been their break in. Sonic stayed silent. He didn't want to spill the beans on his secret. Instead, he was sweating. "Sony?" Annabelle asked. He shook his head. "What? Oh uh it's nothing!" Sonic said. "Ok?" she replied.
She told Sonic that she'd be in the lab Tails and her were renting out as of now. Annabelle closed the door to the dorm, leaving Sonic the perfect time to quickly slip on his shoes, as well as his gloves and bracelet. It was a good thing Annabelle didn't spot it or his enhanced tail and ears. After that he slipped out the door and headed down the hallways until he heard some speaking. He poked his head around a door to see one of those rooms where college students had their more major classes. There, in the center of it all, was Professor Pickle himself. Sonic wanted to tell him hello, but didn't want to interrupt the class he was teaching nor blow away his cover. It seemed that the professor was teaching the class about the two entities of dark and light. Yet.....they didn't know that Sonic really was the entity of darkness. Sonic sighed, wishing that he could at least show his friends his magic or wait until night where he would become a walking glow stick. Instead, he closed the door and left.
Before heading to the lab, he stood outside the main door to the university, the wind telling him hello. The sun had already risen. Sonic missed the sunrise, and he realized that this was his first sunrise in three years. Three whole years, and yet I see this sunrise on my second day home, Sonic thought with a happy sigh. Chip would of loved to see it, but he was busy doing his own thing with Lucius. Knuckles was the first to come out. He had a cupful of grapes in his hand, and he was eating them bit by bit. He talked with Sonic for a bit. The hedgehog missed talking with his echidna friend. Same applied to the others. Once it ended, the two walked in together.
They arrived at the spare lab the foxes were working at. Annabelle did computer work while Tails took notes. "Hey guys. How are my favorite foxes doing?" he asked them. Annabelle waved from the laptop and Tails smiled at his friend. He was very happy to see Sonic again after so long. Sonic walked over to the laptop Annabelle was on. "What's this?" he asked. This was when Tails' explanation started: "It appeared right after Eggmanland was torn down. Apparently it leads to the Core, or Underground as it's called."
His ears twitched at the word core. At the same time, Sonic had only seen bits and pieces of it before absorbing Dark Gaia and going rogue. He didn't know it was an entire new world at first. Imagine if he could take his friends down there to see it! They would of loved it. Annabelle, Tails, and Amy especially. Knuckles looked at Sonic, asking if he was ok. Sonic nodded, and continued to look at the laptop and then Tails' notes. "These are impressive," Sonic replied. He looked through them all, including a note written about how Dark Gaia looked like a hedgehog. Sonic almost felt like he wanted to die inside. Imagine if GUN actually found and caught him. It would be so much worse than your arch nemesis getting you.
Annabelle pulled up another article about the crater. "It says here that some of the Dark Gaia monsters have appeared from that crater and have roamed the planet at night," she said. There were even pictures of the creatures: Deep Nightmares, Little Rexes, even a few Big Mothers. What are they doing? I did spawn them there, Sonic thought looking confused. Annabelle and Tails look at him. "Are you-" Tails started. "I'm gonna go," Sonic said. Before anyone could say anything, Sonic dashed off and out of the university. He wanted to check out the town, as well as the local Gaia Temple. This should be fun.
