Forgive me, beloved readers, for I have sinned...

Avenoir
n. the desire that memory could flow backward. We take it for granted that life moves forward. But you move as a rower moves, facing backwards: you can see where you've been, but not where you're going. And your boat is steered by a younger version of you. It's hard not to wonder what life would be like facing the other way...

"We need to board that train." Hot Pants announced as we approached the moving vehicle.

"No, we need to find Gyro and Johnny!" I argued.

"Actually-" Diego added. "-we have a bigger problem."

"What do you mean?" Diego pointed forwards, and it took me a second to understand what I was looking at. Was it a mirror? Was I dreaming? No, it was very much real.

"Be careful, if we touch our other selves, we die, remember?" Truthfully, I really couldn't grasp the fact that the three people in front of us were... Us. We were identical, yet they were other people.

"Wait, they're us?" Hot Pants questioned. "Shit, what do we do?"

"We need to abandon our horses. Now!" The three of us threw ourselves off our horses, running towards the group. I'm not one to necessarily question things, but aren't we supposed to run... away from them?

The train stood still on the tracks, possibly waiting for something. Diego gave me a nod, and I finally got what he meant. Of course, that's what he meant.

I summoned Purple Rain, and the sky darkened above us. Raindrops poured down around them. Diego and Hot Pants stopped, since we now only had to wait until they drowned and evaporated. Unfortunately, something was very strange. The first drop landed on the other Hot Pants, and she disappeared immediately.

"Diego, what's going?" I asked, and he thought for a moment.

"Remember what I told you earlier? About how the president grabs people from other dimensions?"

"By getting placed between two objects? Yes, why?"

"I think it's the same for them. If they get stuck between two things, they'll immediately die. Even something as simple as raindrops." We turned our gazes forward again, where the other me had disappeared as well. The raindrops increased, and it was eventually inevitable for the other Diego to die.

I felt my stomach twist at the sight. I know it wasn't actually him, but it looked like it. I held back the tears and turned back to the real Diego, who was already looking at me.

"You're so precious." He smirked, and placed his arm around me in a soft hug.

"Shut up..." I replied. Hot Pants gave Diego an annoyed nod, before turning her back to us. It was almost like she gave us a few seconds of privacy.

"Look, Y/N..." Diego began. "I want to say something, in case this thing doesn't... Go as planned."

"Diego, don't jinx this now." I frowned.

"Please, just hear me out." I internally giggled at him saying 'please' but listened closely to what he had to say. "I despise people. Society itself has brought a curse over me. I hate everyone, and enjoye living in solitude. Not only do I not care for other people, but I truly hate even the sight of them. It has felt empty, like something was missing, and I..." He looked away with a bright red blush across his face. One that made me melt inside. "My heart is so full now. It's so full of you, that I can't imagine ever taking another breath without you by my side. I still don't care for other people, but you-... You've made my heart start beating again, and I'd do anything for that to keep happening."

His bright blue eyes stared off into the distance. He was definitely speaking from the heart- loud and honest. But his brain wasn't cooperating. It's like he said those words for the first time, but they had always been there. Those words, those feelings, they had always been there with him. He just hadn't been able to say it until he found someone to say it to.

"Diego, I love you." I wrapped my arms around him. Not like a casual hug, but a genuine, tight embrace where I absolutely refused to let him go. I leaned my head against his shoulder, pressing my face into the fabric of his sweater. "I'm sorry." I mumbled. "But I just wish you'd hold me like this for a little longer."

"Oh, darling..." His arms held me tightly. Diego showed no indication of wanting to let me go. "I promise that once this is over, I'll never let you go."

"Excuse me..." Hot Pants cleared her throat. "I don't mean to ruin your moment, but the train is about to leave."

"She's right." Diego left a last kiss on my cheek, before we had to run to the train.

Hot Pants and Diego ran ahead of me, grabbing onto the railing and pulling themselves onto it. I got just slightly behind, but they both reached their hands out to me, and I made it just before the train sped up. Diego opened the door to a passenger car. Inside, laid Lucy Steel on a table. Only she did not look like Lucy. The corpse had somehow absorbed her, and she was no longer pregnant. This was the true motive of the corpse, this was what Valentine had needed her for.

"Lucy!" I took a step forward, concerned for my new friend. Unfortunately, I got swung to the side. Valentine had come out of nowhere, cutting up my thigh with a dagger. The blood ran from my thigh, down to the floor. It was a big cut, and Hot Pants immediately tried to rush to my side. Unfortunately, she was stopped by Valentine who rushed towards her for his second attack.

"Shit!" Diego exclaimed. His eyes darted between me and Hot Pants. Of course, he wanted to help me first, but the only one who could do that was Hot Pants, and she was fighting with the President.

He made a decision, a horrible one to be honest. He threw himself at Valentine, throwing the two men out of a window- out of the train. I was in too much pain to worry, so Hot Pants ran over to me. She used her spray, fixing up my wound in an instance.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah..." I nodded, before running over to Lucy. She was unconscious, but alive. Luckily, we'd be able to save her soon enough. Though, there was a strange light emanating from her. It was as if she was a beacon of a kind.

"What's that?" Hot Pants asked.

"I don't know, but it's thanks to the corpse." I looked at her once I spoke, immediately seeing something through the window behind her. "Look! Out there!"

"What?" She turned around, seeing the same thing I was.

"It's Gyro and Johnny! We might actually have a chance now!" I cheered.

"Yes, but we need to help Lucy first. Also, aren't you worried about Di-" Hot Pants flew back against a wall, hitting her head. I froze from the shock, not quite understanding what had just happened. Her head was bleeding, but she was moving at least. I turned around, once more getting Valentine's filthy fingers on my face as he grabbed a hold of me.

"Hello again, Puppet." He looked down on me.

No.

No, no, no.

"Missed me?"

No, fuck, shit.

"I don't like all this meddling you're doing. You don't understand what I'm working for here, so let me explain it to you, okay?" He grinned.

"But- Diego...?" I forced the words out through his tight grip.

"He's gone." He said, smiling proudly.

"W- What?"

"I killed Diego."
