But this was no dream, and, unlike the nightmare, the girl wasn't running for her life; Athena was racing to save someone.

Alice had said there was a good chance they would both die there. Perhaps the outcome would be different if the vampire wasn't trapped by the sunlight; only Athena was free to run across this bright, crowded square.

And she couldn't run fast enough.

So it didn't matter to her that they were surrounded by their extraordinarily dangerous enemies.
As the clock began to toll out the hour, vibrating under the soles of her shoes, the girl knew she was too late.
