Shadow and Amy are in the same friend group, but after a mysterious mission goes wrong and he begins acting differently... only then does Amy find out just Shadow the hedgehog is hiding.

Amy's always had a thing for her upperclassman Sonic. She felt completely infatuated the second she laid eyes on him, and who could blame her? Sonic was not only the most sought after guy at school, but he was also incredibly kind and generous, always seeking to protect those who couldn't protect themselves. It was natural that Amy would fall for him.

Her fascination with Sonic has been painfully obvious from the start, especially to him, and Amy knew that. No matter how hard she tried to hide the stolen glances, the way her eyes lit up whenever he spoke to her—the way her cheeks would instantaneously become red at the sight of him, it all sold her out in the end.

Sonic would respond to Amy's infatuation with nervous smiles, platonic gestures and playful banter. Even with the knowledge that Amy was deeply in love with him, he didn't avoid or treat her any differently, but he did keep purposeful distance between the them for which Amy didn't blame him for. She figured it was his way of letting her down easy.

As her time at Chaos university progressed, Amy eventually started to accept the fact she and Sonic had no future. Although her knees still felt like pudding whenever she was around him, Amy began to treasure her platonic relationship with Sonic and began to see him as a dear friend. As the fantasy of him requiting her love began to fade into just that, a distant fantasy, Sonic and Amy's bond became strong.

Amy's friend circle grew as Sonic began introducing her to his other friends, Shadow being a notable one, Shadow was stand off ish and preferred to be alone, but deep down that teenage angst was a sweet boy who only really wanted the best for everyone. Others she had soon become close with such as Rouge and Knuckles, welcomed her into their friend group with open arms, Rouge had become like an older sister to her, and Knuckles, despite his need to keep people out— grew attached to Amy as well, enjoying their little banter.

All was well for Amy Rose.

Or rather, all had been well until that fateful Monday. Amy never fully learned what actually happened during that short mission, Shadow and Sonic refused to talk about it, all she was able to gather was that while Sonic and Shadow were out fulfilling their duties, someone had been assassinated. Sonic and Shadow almost lost their own lives that day. Although it was common knowledge missions were difficult and brutal, she couldn't quite put her finger on what exactly it was that completely changed the boys, she never pried and they never brought it up.

The changes in their behavior was subtle, Sonic was still the happy go lucky guy who fiercely protected those who couldn't protect themselves, but his smile never quite reached his eyes the way it used to and Shadow, his teenage angst became constant agitation, his temper was short and he was constantly playing the defense. Amy saw less of him outside of classes and he began pushing everyone away.

It had only been about a month since the incident, it still deeply pained Amy to see her friends affected by something she can't even imagine, she could only watch in silence as the light in their eyes slowly faded.

After a hard week of dealing with her own missions and a long day has just passed, she decides to spend her evening in one of the usually empty common rooms at chaos university, reading a book and having a nice cup of tea. It was very late into the night but Amy just couldn't bring her body to relax enough to sleep, not with her occupied mind with the past few grueling weeks.
