Not How I Expected

Lexie's POV

I was now full-term and slightly overdue. Today, the baby was extremely hyperactive and moved all day. Every now and then she would kick and move with more force against my ribs or my hips.

"Lex, are you alright, my love?" Charlize asked me after noticing me shift for the fifth time in ten minutes.

"I am fine, Charlize. She is just super active today. I keep getting attacked in the ribs and hips, our daughter is trying to bruise all my internal organs." I tell her.

"You have been saying that she is active since you woke up groaning this morning. If you are in labor..."

"I'm not. If I thought I was in labor, I would tell you because I know things progress faster after the first baby. Before I moved in, Elizabeth would do this all the time during the last two months. I am okay. I don't think I am in labor."

"I just worry." She whispers, placing a hand on my bump.

"I know," I say, feeling suddenly anxious. I tried to hide the panic in my voice, but Charlize heard it.

"Hey. What's wrong?" She asked, panic and concern now lining her voice.

"I am three days overdue, and you are supposed to get surgery in two weeks. What if I don't have the baby before then? What if she comes when you are in surgery? What if something happens?" I said in tears. Charlize got off the couch and knelt in front of me.

"Don't think like that, Lexie. It will be okay."

"you don't know that. I want you to be with me. I don't want to do this without you. I... I don't want to lose you."

"Hey, don't think that way. Lexie, this stress is not good for you or our baby."

"I know. You're right. I need to try and focus on the fact that you are here." I say.

"We will get through this, together."

Later that night, I could not sleep, so I just read on my phone. Suddenly, I felt a rush of fluid between my legs.

"Oh no, Charlize, wake up!" I whispered while shaking her. She continued to sleep. "Char! Please, wake up! I... Ahhh!"

I screamed as an intense contraction tore through me. I gripped her arm tightly.

"Lex, what's wrong?" She asked.

"My water broke," I said after the contraction.

"Oh my... okay. We're doing this." She smiled. Another contraction tore through me.

"Charlize!" I cried out.

"Okay, the contractions are way too close. How long have you been in labor?"

"I don't know. I thought it just started, but I don't think that's the case. Char, I'm not going to make it to the hospital. Call the doctor, tell her I'm giving birth at home, and get your mom. The baby is coming."

Charlize ran and did what I asked. She and her mom came in and she was by my side.

"Lex, I am going to check on you. Is that okay?" Gerda says. I nodded.

"The doctor is on her way here."

"Char! I think I need to push!"

"Lexie, I feel the head. You need to start pushing."

I begin to push and immediately feel the need to change my position.

"I need to get on my knees!" I cry.

Charlize helped me to my knee and got in front of me so I could hold onto her. I started pushing again and felt the baby drop lower.

"You're doing so well, my love," Charlize says.

"I can't do it! Not like this! Ahh!" I screamed into her shoulder.

"Lexie, the baby is crowning. Try to take deep breaths" Gerda tells me. I tried to breathe steadily.

"Ahh! Char! Make it stop! Please! I can't do this!"

"Lexie, you are almost there. Just a little longer. I am right here. I've got you."

"Head is out, just a couple more pushes and she will be here," Gerda tells me. At that moment the doctor came in. I tuned them all out and pushed, moaning and groaning in pain. Till finally, I felt relief. After a moment, I heard the cry of my daughter. Charlize helped me turn and lay against her as our baby was placed on my chest.

"Baby is perfectly healthy, it seems." My doctor tells me.

"You did great, Lexie," Gerda says.

"Charlize, why don't you take Lexie to get cleaned up and I will help Gerda in here. I will also do the baby's stats." My doctor instructs. Charlize nods and carries me to the bathroom.

"How are you feeling?" She asks me.

"I am tired and sore, but I am happy she is here." I smile.

"I am so proud of you. You remained relatively calm under the circumstances."

"That was not how I expected to have her. I mean, I was in labor all day. She was ready to get out and she hid my contractions with her movement. I just feel like everything happened so fast and I should have listened to you when you voiced your concerns."

"I know it was scary, but you were so strong. You didn't panic, you were aware, and you voiced your needs."

"It didn't feel that way. I was freaking out and I thought I was going to die." I said as she helped me get in the shower.

"You didn't panic, and that is the important thing. Now we have a beautiful, healthy baby girl." Charlize tells me as she washes my legs.

"I couldn't have done it without you. If you weren't here, Char, I wouldn't have been able to stay calm. I..."

"Darling, look at me," she tells me, cutting me off, "I do not want you to worry. I understand that you are scared, but it will be okay. I am going to get the surgery, everything will go right, and we will get to have our wedding. I promise you that."

"I want you to reschedule the surgery for next week," I tell her.

"No, absolutely not. That is too soon, you need me."

"Your mom has already said that she would help with the girls and the baby. You have put this off for months. Charlize, please, do the surgery before it is too late."

"Okay. I will call in the morning." She tells me. She starts washing my hair gently.

"Thank you."

"Alright, serious question. What are we going to name our daughter?"

"Okay so it is a little long and it is only a suggestion, but I was thinking, Kimberly Penelope-Gerda," I suggest.

"Kimberly Penelope-Gerda Mills-Theron. I think it's perfect."

"Now I am jealous. Our daughter gets your last name before I do." I said. She chuckled

"You get my last name soon, love." She said before kissing me gently.

A.N.

Hey everyone,

Sorry it is a little late, I know I said I would update it yesterday, but for some reason, I struggled. With this story, I have been writing it out on paper first before posting it because I can handwrite whenever I want no matter where I am. I try to keep the handwriting a bit ahead of this so I can update a couple of chapters at a time. I don't know why but I had a hard time with copying it from my notebook onto here, but it is finished now. YAY!
