Charlize POV.
After a long fertility journey, we were now waiting to see if Lexie was pregnant. She asked me to go out and buy some tests. As she took one, I waited in the bathroom, per her request. The wait felt neverending. I heard her whispering and crying.
"Oh my god! Charlize!" She called out to me. I got up and went to the bathroom door. I slowly opened the door.
"Hey. I'm here, baby." I said. I was nervous. She was about to tell me whether or not she might be pregnant. She looked at me with tears in her eyes, but I could not tell if she was happy or sad. She let out a shaky breath and held up the test.
"We will know for sure tomorrow, but according to this... I'm pregnant." She tells me.
I hugged her gently. No words could describe how happy I was. She cried happily in my arms. I could tell she did not want to let herself be too happy, in case it was a false positive or her pregnancy hormones didn't double like they should in a couple of days.
"Let's not say anything to mom or the girls until tomorrow. As far as they know, we are waiting for the doctor to tell us."
"I am trying not to get too excited."
We went through the rest of the day as normal. Lexie played with the girls while I made dinner with my mom.
"When do you find out if Lexie is pregnant?" She asked me.
"Tomorrow."
"Hmm."
"What, mom?"
"She is definitely pregnant." She said casually.
"How? How could you possibly know that?" I ask.
"I learned a lot in my life. Not to mention, it was always easier to tell after I had you, I'm sure if you called Kerry then she would tell you that she thinks Lexie is expecting. I mean she called Lexie out on being pregnant with Elizabeth."
"Mom, I am not going to ask Kerry if she thinks my fiance is pregnant."
"Has Lexie said anything?"
"She feels different, but it is not the same as when she was pregnant with Lizzie. I don't know, mom. She is trying not to dwell and get her hopes up about it." I say. Lexie walks in and got a glass of water.
"I need a little bit of adult conversation. So... what are we talking about?" She asks.
"Mom is pestering me."
"About?"
"Do you think you're pregnant?" Mom asked her. I waved my arm toward mom, indicating that was the answer to Lexie's question.
"I mean, I feel sick. I feel like something is different, but it is nothing like when I was pregnant with Lizzie." Lexie said.
"Have you talked to Kerry?" Mom asked her.
"God, mom. Why are you so fixated on Kerry knowing if she is pregnant?" I asked. Mom ignored me.
"Yeah. She asked if I felt any different. Honestly, with all the fertility hormones, I don't know what to believe. I am scared to take a pregnancy test because... because what if it says that I am pregnant but the blood test says I'm not. What if my hormones don't double as they should and I miscarry?" She said tearing up. I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her.
"Baby, it will be okay."
"From what I can tell, we will definitely be welcoming a new baby in nine months... give or take a month," Mom said. Lexie calmed down a bit and looked at my mother in amusement.
The next morning, Lexie and I got up and got ready for our appointment. We left the house at around 6:45 and arrived at 7:25. We filled out all the forms and Lexie got her blood drawn. We chose to wait at the clinic for the results. Our doctor told us that Lexie was pregnant and her hormone level was already higher than she expected it to be, which was a good sign. Given that IVF is a delicate process, she suggested that Lexie take it easy and for us to come back in a couple of days for another blood test.
We ran some errands before going back home. When we returned to the house, we were instantly greeted by mom and the girls.
"Well?" Mom asked. We motioned for everyone to go into the living room and sit down.
"I am pregnant," Lexie says. Jackson and August beamed. Jackson held out her hand and Auugust gave her $3.
"Did you two bet on her pregnancy?" I asked them. They nodded.
"What if she wasn't pregnant?"
"Then I would have waited until we were alone to give August her money," Jackson said.
"My question is why are you two bet on things with each other?" Lexie asked.
"It keeps us entertained. We bet on Lizzie's first words and I won." August said.
"Anyways... I was right." Mom said.
"Yeah. But the doctor said I needed to take it easy and be careful."
"This is a more high-risk pregnancy because of IVF. It is such a delicate process and with all the hormones, anything could happen."
"I can guarantee that I will be put on bed rest during the third trimester, if not sooner," Lexie said with a sigh.
"You don't know that, Lex," I tell her. She just looked at me and said nothing else.
