I own nothing
Chapter 19: Springing the TrapThe days passed relatively peacefully as Ozpin trained the kids while Qrow was out recruiting independent Huntsmen for their raid. It was brutal work as even though he was forced to make do with Oscar's body, the former headmaster was no slouch in combat. (Y/N)'s whole body ached just as badly as it had when he had first started combat training back at Beacon. Not helping was Qrow, who seemed to become more and more dejected with each passing day. He hadn't mentioned anything to the group, not even Ozpin, but the dragon could tell something was bothering him greatly. As for Oscar, he and (Y/N) got along swimmingly, helped by the fact the farm boy was closer in age to him than any other member of the team.
Eventually, the night to host the dinner for their Huntsmen recruits came, even though Qrow did not look hopeful about it. Still, (Y/N) rustled about, setting the table and helping stir the pot of food.
"All right, the first batch is just about done." Ren declared.
"Awesome!" Ruby cheered as she was on veggie grilling duty. "Now we just need Qrow and we're all set!"
"You really think he's gonna bring that many people?" Nora asked, already picking at the food. "This is a lot of food."
"Ah, I don't know. But it sounds like we can use all the help we can get."
"Exactly how convincing can we be without having to reveal the Maidens or Salem?" (Y/N) asked, unsure of how the adults were going to go about this.
"I'm sure Ozpin has something." Ruby assured him as the front door opened and closed.
"I'm back!" Qrow called.
Ruby smiled. "Be right there!"
"You're going to overcook that." Ren warned.
"No I'm not! Shut up!"
"Hey, um, Ruby?" Qrow said.
"I'm coming!" A plume of black smoke puffed from the pan, making Ruby shove it into Ren's hands. "It's burning! You take over!" She then grabbed a tray and walked into the living room, (Y/N) still able to hear her. "So we didn't know how many people were coming, so we just cooked all of it."
She suddenly gasped as a crashing sound was heard, making (Y/N) jolt up.
"Ruby!?"
He ran into the living room, only to see Qrow standing by the door with Yang, who now had a new mechanical arm, and Weiss. The boy was just as shocked as his older sister, unable to move as she began to stutter apologies.
"Yang, I...I'm so sorry! I-I should've stayed, and I should've talked to you more! I'd-I just...I wasn't sure you wanted me around and-,"
Yang cut her off by hugging her as the two began to cry.
"I love you."
Ruby sobbed and hugged back. "I love you too."
Weiss and (Y/N) smiled at the scene as the rest of Team RNJR and Oscar walked in.
"Weiss?" Ruby prompted as Yang and her opened their arms.
Yang looked over to (Y/N), who was crying happy tears. "Hey, get in here too, little man."
(Y/N) flew into their arms, sobbing. "I'm so happy to see you! I missed you!"
Weiss kissed his head. "We missed you too, so much that you imagine. I'm so happy you're okay."
Yang gave a half chuckle as she ruffled his hair, noting his horns. "Look at you, you're getting so big, I almost didn't recognize you. You look like a real Huntsman!"
The boy just kept hugging them, not wanting to let go in case this was some cruel dream. But it wasn't, and no one dare ruin this reunion.
(Timeskip)
The newly reunited group laughed around the table as they ate a ridiculous amount of food. Team RNJR and (Y/N) were recounting their adventures in Anima up until now. Jaune was currently telling their companions about their troubles when Yang interrupted with a laugh.
"How do you lose your map at a time like that!?"
"Believe me, I've asked myself the same thing ever since."
Weiss and Yang laughed while (Y/N), who was between them, scarfed his meal since it appeared only they would be the ones eating tonight.
Nora then chimed in. "Hey, but you made up for it, Mister Muscles! You shoulda seen this guy take a giant Grimm head on!"
"I couldn't have done it without Ruby and (Y/N) wearing it down."
"Uh us?" Ruby asked, pointing her chopsticks at Ren. "Did you see Ren during that fight?
"Yeah!" (Y/N) agreed, swallowing hard. "He was out of control!"
"I'm sorry." Ren said unsure. "I may have lost my temper momentarily."
"No, no! Out of control as in awesome!" (Y/N) reiterated as he had to fend off wandering chopsticks from Nora.
Ren nodded, understanding now. "Ooooh. Thank you."
Everyone burst laughing as Weiss began to tell them about her time in Atlas. (Y/N) made a silent promise to set her dad on fire if he ever saw the jerk. He and everyone else were taken aback when Weiss told them about her summoning a Boarbatusk in the middle of a fancy party because of an ignorant, big mouth.
"You didn't!" Ruby challenged as Weiss covered her face in embarrassment.
"Yeah, right in the middle of the party."
"Please tell me you let that lady have it." Yang pleaded.
Weiss shot up. "Of course not! Even if I did really want to."
Nora crossed her arms. "No way, I don't believe it."
"Uh, Nora?" The little dragon said as he pointed to Weiss's newly summoned beast.
She yelped, falling out of her chair, while everyone began laughing again. Dinner continued for a while and the conversation turned to (Y/N)'s training and his fully unlocked Semblance. The boy was more than happy to show off his new weapons to his two other sisters.
"Hey! Looks like someone's copied my style!" Yang boasted.
"Yeah, turns out punching Grimm in the face is my strong point." He admitted with a bright smile. "I can control how long the blades are and I can use different dusts in my shots!"
"You see how he uses gravity dust." Nora joked. "Pure poetry if I do say so."
"And, your semblance?" Weiss inquired.
The dragon smiled and held up the bracelet. "Completely under control!" Ruby cleared her throat. "Mostly...under control,"
"How does it work?" Yang asked.
"It's a bond based semblance. Every charm connects me to a person and gives me a specific power depending on the person."
"Theoretically, he could obtain countless powers over time." Ren pointed out.
(Y/N) tilted his head. "Well, I'd need a real bond with someone in order for my Semblance to work, but I guess I could if I make enough friends."
"So all of our charms work?" Weiss asked.
He nodded with a smile. "Of course! Ruby's charm makes me super fast, Yang's makes me super strong, Weiss's powers up my fire, and Blake..."
He cut himself off, feeling sad at the memory of the cat faunus. He wished she was here. Weiss, noticing this, hugged him.
"It's okay, we miss her too."
(Y/N) returned the gesture. "Thanks, Weiss."
Switching topics, Yang stepped up to the plate to show off her new arm. Needless to say, everyone was impressed.
"It's not a replacement for the real thing, but I'll make sure to make good use of it."
"That's amazing." Jaune commented as everyone smiled.
"Incredible." Ren agreed.
Ruby inhaled excitedly as she rushed over to fawn over the equipment. "And it's just as strong?"
"Hm, sure is." Yang said proudly.
Nora suddenly slammed her hand on the table and put up the right one for an arm wrestling match. "Wanna bet!?"
Weiss rolled her eyes. "Nora, please, now's not the time..."
Yang cut her off by immediately accepting the challenge. Ruby and (Y/N) cheered for Yang while Jaune and Ren cheered on Nora.
"Don't let her beat you! You can do it!
"Show em what Team JNPR's made of!"
"Show her what for, Yang!"
"Come on, sis! Aw, you can't lose to a girl in a skirt!"
"You wear a skirt, Ruby,"
"Weiss, you're not cheering loud enough!"
"It definitely feels like the original," Nora taunted. "I'll give you that!"
"Yup. But, it does have some new features!"
"Heh, oh yeah?"
There was a loud clicking as Nora was launched back, Yang's arm in hand. As she groaned in pain, Jaune looked to the others.
"Did she...win?"
Sitting up, Nora realized what she was holding and screamed in terror. Yang laughed as she caught her arm. After finishing dinner, Jaune sluggishly gathered up the dishes.
"Gyah...we ate it all...Ugh, I think I'm gonna be sick..."
"Easy there, Vomit Boy." Yang teased. "(Y/N) did most of it."
(Y/N) burped as his head rested on the table just to prove her point while Jaune rolled his eyes.
"Ooh, we're doing nickname throwbacks now. Wonderful."
He walked away while Weiss giggled.
"I mean, the Ice Queen seems to like it." Nora added as Weiss froze as Yang and (Y/N) held in their laughs, while Ruby cackled loudly.
"I so did not miss you people." Weiss said, though her smile said something else. Nora gasped.
"Oh my gosh, she really does like it! What went and warmed your heart while you were gone?"
"Hey! You make it sound like I used to be terrible."
"Nah." Yang assured. "Just a lot to deal with at once."
"Hmp!"
Yang stuck her tongue out. "Hmp!"
"It's been a long time." Ren interjected. "We've all grown in our own ways."
"You think so?" (Y/N) asked.
"Well, think back to when we were all at Beacon, would you say you ever did anything foolish or embarrassing? Or did you think you were perfect?"
"Oh gosh." Weiss groaned, putting her face into her hands.
"I may have been a little too gung-ho from time to time." Yang admitted.
"Heh, you?" Ruby interrupted. "I tried to 1v1 a Nevermore on the second day of school."
"First flight." (Y/N) mumbled as he kept his face planted to the table.
Jaune returned and leaned against the wall. "Yeah well, don't even get me started."
"Well that embarrassment- that desire to go back and tell yourself not to be so stupid- that just proves you're not the same person you used to be. You're smarter, or kinder, or stronger, and you're not done growing yet. None of us are."
"Yeah, turns out Ren gets real deep when he feels like talking." Ruby joked, making everyone laugh.
Nora shot up. "Well, hold on! I thought I was pretty great in school!"
"Even at the dance?" Yang inquired. "When you spilled punch all over yourself in front of-," Nora raced over to yell. "YES, especially the dance! THANK YOU, YANG!"
Weiss, Ruby, and (Y/N) giggled as Qrow walked in to join them, Oscar close behind him.
"How can you kids possibly make so much noise eating dinner!?" Qrow asked as everyone just stared at Oscar, who chuckled nervously.
"I-He wants to talk."
(Timeskip)
Everyone took the time to exchange information as Ozpin, who sat between Team RNJR, (Y/N), and the other two, got Weiss and Yang up to speed.
"So the Maidens. Magic. Salem. It's all true?" Weiss asked.
Qrow nodded. "Uh huh."
"Miss Xiao Long, is this more or less what your mother told you?"
Yang ignored the question, her arms crossed. "You forgot something. You forgot to tell everyone what you did to Qrow and my mother."
Everyone's eyes widened as (Y/N) tilted his head.
"What is she talking about?" Jaune asked.
The mentioned drunk rolled his eyes. "Oh, great."
"Hm." Ozpin contemplated. "That's not a secret I thought she would give up so easily. Your mother must trust you a great deal." Yang gave him the stink eye as he broke contact. "My ability to reincarnate, though a curse, isn't without a few key benefits. Much like the Maidens, I too possess a certain... 'magical' power." He stood up and moved over to Qrow. "Using this power, I was able to gift the Branwen twins with the ability to "see" more, to move freely and be unburdened by their natural bodies. I...well...gave them the ability to turn into birds." He chuckled. "Rather ridiculous sounding out loud, isn't it?"
Team RNJR and (Y/N) blinked.
"Uncle?"
"You turned them...into birds."
"Alright, now you're just messing with us."
"What else is new?"
"He's telling the truth." Weiss insisted. "Raven turned from a bird to a person right in front of us!"
"Why would you do something like that?" Yang asked aggressively. "I mean what is wrong with you!?"
"Yang." Qrow challenged. "That's enough. We made a choice. We wanted this."
Oz looked up to Qrow. "May I?" He walked to two girls. "Granting this power to them was no trivial task, and I can assure you it was not done frivolously. I required assistance to gather information on Salem's plans, as well as searching for Maidens when their hosts became unclear."
"Okay, so have you done this with others?" Ruby asked.
(Y/N) joined in. "Yeah, like General Ironwood? Or Professor Goodwitch?"
"As helpful as that might be, unfortunately it's not that simple. My power is finite, and if I'm being honest, dwindling. The amount that I gifted to Qrow and Raven was, all things considered, rather minuscule. You see, centuries ago, I sacrificed a great deal of magic to four young women, who I hoped would use my gift for good."
"So, you were the old man in the story." (Y/N) realized, though not very shocked.
"Yes, they became the first Maidens. Miss Xiao Long, it was never my intention to lie to you, to any of you. There are just some matters I prefer to...'play close to the chest'. I believe that's how you phrased it?" He glanced at Qrow, who chuckled and nodded.
"Yeah."
"Everyone has a choice. The Branwens chose to accept their powers and the responsibilities that came with them. And later, one of them chose to abandon her duties, in favor of her own self-interest. Now, all of you have a choice. If anyone wishes to leave, now is the time. There is no shame or disgrace in abstaining, only in retreat." No one moved and he turned back around. "Very well then."
Yang stood up.
"Yang?" Ruby asked.
"If Ruby and (Y/N) stick around, then I will too. If there's one thing I know about them, it's that they somehow alway know the right thing to do. But, if we're going to help, if we're going to keep risking our lives, no more lies. No more half-truths."
The males looked at each other before Oz looked back at her.
"Understood."
Yang sat back down as Jaune asked the obvious question.
"So, what now? I mean, what can we do?"
"Mm, that is a difficult question. One that I believe is best answered tomorrow."
"What do you mean?"
"The road ahead is undoubtedly filled with hardships and peril. However, it's been far too long since you have all been together." Oz placed a hand on Yang's shoulder. "Please, take tonight, enjoy this moment."
His eyes flashed as Oscar took control. He immediately jumped back, hoping Yang wouldn't beat him up. (Y/N), Weiss, and Yang laughed as Nora let out a loud "Oooh". Everyone looked at her.
"Raven!? Qrow!? They're birds! Cracked it!"
(Y/N) then looked accusingly at Qrow. "Hey wait, I could've had a flying partner this whole time?"
(Timeskip)
(Y/N) tossed around in bed, reaching out for Weiss to cuddle up to her, since Yang had lost rock, paper, scissors the previous night when it was bedtime.
"Weiss?"
He yawned as he stretched and rolled out of bed. He dragged his feet as he walked into the hallway, guided by the scent of coffee. He wandered into the kitchen and saw Weiss pouring the bitter drink into cups and placing them on a tray.
"Morning, Weiss." He moaned through a yawn.
The white haired girl turned around in surprise. "(Y/N)! You shouldn't be up this early!"
He walked up to her and hugged her, leaning against her for support.
"You weren't there. Couldn't go back to sleep."
The Schnee sighed before patting his head. "I'm sorry, but you know, you're getting a bit too old for this."
"No I'm not." He muttered into her clothes.
She chuckled. "I'm making coffee for Ruby and Yang. Why don't you help me?"
"Okay."
(Y/N) flew up and got the sugar from the cabinet and gave it to Weiss before getting the cream and milk from the fridge. Placing it on the counter, he sniffed the liquid before blanching.
"It smells really bitter."
"Well that's the point. Why don't you try some?"
Hesitantly, the boy brought the drink to his lips and drank a tiny sip.
He gagged. "Blah! That tastes horrible!"
Weiss smiled. "It's an acquired taste, and it gives you plenty of energy."
"Well I don't feel tired anymore. But I'm sticking with tea."
She laughed and ruffled his hair. "It's better for you anyways. Now, why don't you put some sugar and cream in Ruby's so it meets her sweet tooth's needs."
"Got it!"
(Y/N) poured a massive amount of sugar and cream into the drink before setting it on the tray. Weiss picked it up and the two walked out into the backyard, finding Yang and Ruby talking.
"What are you doing up?" Ruby asked as her sister sat down next to her.
"Can't fall back asleep."
"Eh, me either."
"Well fortunately," Weiss interjected as she presented the tray. "Coffee exists."
As she handed Yang her drink, (Y/N) sat next to her and leaned his against her arm, like a puppy begging for pets. Ruby put her hands up as Weiss handed her a cup.
"No please!"
Weiss smiled. "Don't worry. (Y/N) put in blasphemous amounts of cream and sugar just for you."
Ruby quickly perked up. "Aww, yeah! Nice Weiss strikes again!"
The Schnee pulled the cup away at this. "I will pour this on you and it will burn."
She handed back the cup and Ruby laughed nervously. Weiss took a seat next to her leader and (Y/N), running her fingers through his hair.
"Can't believe we're in Mistral." Yang commented.
"That's what you can't believe?" Ruby asked in disbelief.
"Well yeah! And all the other magic and stuff, but...okay you know what I mean!"
"I honestly wasn't sure if I'd ever see you three again." Weiss admitted.
"Well, here's to defying expectations."
Yang and Weiss cheered as (Y/N) moved his head to Weiss's lap. As she scratched his head happily, Ruby frowned.
"I just wish Blake could be here with us."
(Y/N) looked up at her sadly. He missed Blake too.
"Yeah, well, she made her choice." Yang said harshly.
Ruby and Weiss looked at each other with wide eyes before Weiss looked over at the blonde.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I mean, she could have been here if she just stuck around. It's no big deal though. We'll be fine."
"Don't you want her here?" Ruby asked.
"Why would I want her here?"
"Why do you keep lying when I'm around?" (Y/N) inquired.
"No soul vision."
"I'm not using soul vision!"
"Are you...still mad at her for leaving?" Ruby asked her sister.
Yang rolled her eyes. "Oh. Whatever gave you that idea Ruby? No, I'm totally fine. I'm great."
Weiss tried to deescalate the situation. "Okay. Calm down-,"
Yang whipped her head around, her eyes red. "Don't tell me to calm down!"
All three flinched back, Ruby being the only one brave enough to continue.
"Whoa, Yang."
The blonde blinked, her eyes returning to normal as she realized she had gone too far. She stood up and walked away.
"Whatever."
"You know, she might've left because she wanted to figure things out." (Y/N) suggested.
"She could've done it with us."
"Says the girl wouldn't even look at us when we got home!"
Yang shut the door, hard. The remaining girls looked at each other and then to (Y/N) who stared at the door in disappointment.
"You are playing with fire, (Y/N)." Ruby warned.
He flipped over. "Don't care. I'm fireproof anyways."
Weiss stared at the door before getting up. "I'm gonna talk to her."
"Alone? Are you sure?" Ruby asked.
"I'll be fine."
Weiss headed inside as (Y/N) looked up at Ruby.
"Do you think she can convince her?"
"I think we just have to trust her."
Ruby patted down his head before giving a light chuckle. "Yang's right, you are getting big. I won't be able to do this for much longer."
"No! I like it when you mess with my hair!"
They laughed as Ruby gave him a big hug.
"(Y/N), thank you."
"For what?"
"Everything. For being so brave during all this, keeping me sane, for putting up with my overprotectiveness."
He smiled. "Hey, what are brothers for?"
She sighed. "I still don't like it, but we're past the point I could send you home. I doubt dad could keep you there for long."
"Nope!"
Again, they laughed as Ruby stood up.
"Come on, let's go check on Weiss and Yang."
(Y/N) nodded and followed his sister. Ruby knocked lightly and opened the door, seeing Weiss and Yang sitting on the bed, Weiss's hand on the blonde's shoulder.
"Is, uh, everything okay?"
Yang and Weiss smiled at each other. Yang looked a lot better.
"Yeah. It is."
Ruby sighed in relief. "Good."
(Y/N) pushed past her and sat next to Yang.
"Sooooo, no more being mad?"
"No more being mad."
(Y/N) gave her a big wing hug. "Good!"
(Timeskip)
The girls spent a good amount of time in the bedroom, until (Y/N) decided to get some tea. While in the kitchen, he could hear Qrow and who he assumed was Ozpin talking in the living room. Carefully, he scooted closer to the entrance to listen in.
"Things aren't looking good, Oz." Qrow admitted.
"Ever the optimist." Ozpin joked as he took a sip of something. "While I would not say our current predicament is...ideal, I think we can both agree that the situation could be much worse. Humanity is a resilient force."
"Oz...Pro huntsmen like that don't just bite it all at once. Salem's powerful. It seems like her reach is growing by the day. What does that say about humanity?"
"That there are indeed a misguided few who have filled their hearts with malice. It doesn't take a great number of people to cause harm." (Y/N) unconsciously grabbed his arm at this. "But I still believe there are far more people in this world willing to prevent it"
(Y/N) heard footsteps coming down the stairs as the males stopped for a moment.
"Um." It was Ruby. "Excuse me?"
"Ah, Miss Rose. Join us. You as well, (Y/N)."
He gulped loudly and peaked out from behind the wall, blushing. "Oh, you knew I was there?"
He walked over to Ruby as the professor nodded. "Indeed. We were just about to gather everyone to discuss our next steps."
"Oh, uh, great." Ruby said hesitantly as she and (Y/N) moved to stand in front of them.
"Something on your mind, kiddo?" Qrow inquired, noticing the hesitation in her voice.
"Uh, uh if...it's okay to ask?"
"Of course." Her uncle assured.
"Well uh...we've been talking about the Relic at Haven...and the Spring Maiden, but what about the Fall Maiden?"
"Cinder?" Ozpin specified.
(Y/N) nodded, realizing what Ruby wanted to ask. "Do they have the Beacon relic?"
Qrow and Oz looked at each other before the professor answered.
"Very astute, both of you. I was wondering who would be the first to ask." He shook his head, smiling slyly. "No. Thankfully they do not. It's true that the Relic at Haven is very much at risk, and for now, that should remain our primary focus. Let's just say I made finding the Relic at Beacon a...bit more challenging than at the other schools."
Ruby sighed in relief. "That's good to hear."
"It is, but let's not forget the challenges that still lie before us." Ruby and (Y/N) both nodded. "Now, is there anything else we can help you with?"
"Oh, uh...Well, I did have one more question..."
"No, my cane is not a Relic."
"I have no more questions."
They all laughed.
"Yes, while this cane is indeed very precious to me, it is also just that- precious to me. While I admit it still has a few more tricks up its sleeve, I can firmly say that being a Relic isn't one of them. Now why don't you both run and get the other students?"
"On it!" (Y/N) opened his wings to fly, but Qrow's scroll buzzing stopped him.
The older male took out the device and took the call.
"Yeah? Okay... yeah, we'll be there." He hung up and put the scroll on the table.
"Who was it?" Ruby asked as her uncle sat back.
"It was Leo. Said he had a breakthrough with the council. Thinks he might be able to get together a small raiding party for the bandits. He wants us to meet up at the school tomorrow night to walk us through it," Ruby gasped happily while (Y/N) frowned, not trusting Lionheart in the slightest.
"Really? Oh, that's great! I'll go get the others."
Ruby ran out of the room while (Y/N) stayed put.
Qrow glanced at him after taking a swing of his flask. "Fire breather?"
"We can't trust Lionheart. You know that, right?"
Ozpin glanced at the boy in agreement. "It does sound drastically different from your original conversation, does it not?"
"It does."
Oz looked down. "Interesting."
"Things aren't looking good, Oz." The huntsman repeated as the headmaster raised his head.
"I know."
"I could sneak into the school and check if he's hiding" (Y/N) volunteered. "I doubt he'd be expecting me."
"While we appreciate the determination, (Y/N), it's too dangerous for you to go alone." The headmaster shot down. "We can't have you risking yourself like that."
The boy stamped his foot. "I'm strong! I can handle anything he throws at me!"
"Easy, fire breather." Qrow said calmly. "Don't forget Leo's not a headmaster for nothing. He's a Huntsman, and you're not even old enough to be considered a huntsman in training."
(Y/N) pouted and crossed his arms.
Ozpin smiled. "I am impressed by how far you have come, (Y/N), but it's best we stay together. Our strength lies with us being united."
"Okay...but, what if tomorrow's a trap, which it probably is?"
Qrow took another sip of his flask. "I doubt Leo's got the guts to do something like that. Still," he smirked. "We're not pushovers. I think we're a little more than anyone can bargain for."
(Timeskip)
Night had fallen as the group walked through the campus of Haven Academy, Qrow leading the way. It was mostly silent, the air thick with tension and mistrust. Before leaving the house, Qrow and Ozpin had instructed them all to take their weapons with them, and the conversation from earlier didn't exactly help (Y/N)'s nerves. Cautiously, they all walked into the main building. At the top of a staircase was Lionheart who greeted them.
"Why hello. Thank you for...coming." He glanced nervously at the group, eyeing Weiss, Yang, and Oscar. "There...seems to be more of you than last time."
Qrow brushed it off. "Eh, you know what they say, 'the more, the merrier'. So what's going on with the council?"
Lionheart didn't answer right away and instead examined the group's gear. He accidentally met eyes with (Y/N), and quickly glanced away, in what appeared to be shame. This only furthered the boy's suspicion.
"This is a trap." He thought.
The professor continued to address them. "Why...did you bring your weapons?"
"What?" Qrow motioned his arms in confusion. "Leo, we're Huntsmen. You okay?"
As the adults bantered, (Y/N) heard something ruffling, feathers. Glancing around the room, he caught sight of a bird perched in the corner. At first, he thought the creature had just gotten stuck after someone left the door open. He had seen it happen a couple of times at Beacon, but...the way it was looking at him was strangely human-like. He unconsciously took a step towards it, getting Yang's attention as she looked up to see the bird the boy was staring at. Seeing it, Yang's eyes widened.
"Mom?"
The two men immediately stopped talking. (Y/N) flinched as Qrow, without hesitation, took a shot at the bird who immediately flew to Lionheart, transforming into a woman who looked remarkably like Yang, but with black hair and red eyes. Qrow had Harbinger ready as Ruby glanced away angrily.
"Raven."
Nora backed up a bit. "They...they really are magic."
The bandit leader took off her mask, looking at her twin with a smirk. "If you're going to shoot me, shoot me. That was insulting."
"What are you doing here!?" Qrow angrily demanded as she descended the stairs.
"I could ask you the same thing. You've been scheming, little brother. Planning to attack your own sister."
Qrow swung his head at Lionheart. "Leo, what have you done!?"
"I-,"
Raven cut him off, making her way down the steps. "Leo did what any sane person would in his position- he looked at all the information he had in front of him, assessed the situation, and made a choice." Raven stopped in front of them. "And it seems you all have too."
(Y/N) felt Yang tense as he moved between her and Ruby, trying to get a better look.
Qrow growled at his twin. "You have the Spring Maiden."
"I do."
"Then hand her over and let's work together!" He put his weapon away as a sign of good faith. "We can beat Salem!"
"All that time spent spying for Ozpin and you still have no idea what you're dealing with. There is no beating Salem!"
(Y/N) felt a growl build in his throat, but Ruby placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping him. She then took a step forward, locking eyes with Raven.
"You're wrong. We've done things most people would call impossible, and I know the only reason we were able to do it is because we didn't do it alone! We had people to teach us, people to help us, we had each other! Work with us! At least I know we'll have a better chance if we try together." She extended her hand. "Please."
Raven took one look before addressing them again. "You sound just like your mother,"
Raven suddenly pulled out her sword and slashed, creating a portal. (Y/N) felt his instincts take over as he leapt at his sister.
"Ruby!"
Jumping on to her back, he shielded her in his wings as something crashed into them. Judging by the slight increase in heat, he could tell it was fire. The force was enough to send them skidding, but they were fine thanks to (Y/N) being a natural fire deterrent.
"Ruby! (Y/N)!" Yang yelled as she ran to them.
The crimson hooded girl got off her brother as fast she could, helping him to his feet.
"Are you okay?" She asked as (Y/N) pushed away their hands searching for scratches.
"I'm fine! But we have a problem."
Emerging from the portal was a face (Y/N) swore he'd scorch next time he saw it: Cinder. Behind her, Emerald, Mercury, and another woman followed.
"Hello boys and girls." She greeted condescendingly.
Ruby growled. "Cinder."
(Y/N) hissed furiously as Mercury joined in the taunting as everyone prepared to throw down.
"C'mon guys, is that any way to greet your old friends?"
(Y/N) growled lowly, claws unsheathed and blades drawn. Yang seemed equally as eager to put Mercury in his place. Qrow signaled them to back off and, for some reason, tried to salvage the situation.
"Everybody, stay calm."
The doors behind them suddenly opened as a very burly man who towered above all of them stepped in.
"Oh no." (Y/N) heard Oscar mutter.
"The White Fang is prepping demolition and securing the school grounds." The stranger said as he shut the door. "No one's getting in, and no one's getting out."
Weiss shot the invaders a dirty glare. "This was all just a trap?"
"It appears so." Ren agreed as Qrow clenched his fists.
"Raven, tell me... how long have you been with them?"
"Aww, don't take it personally, little bird." Cinder mocked. "Your sister was a recent addition. The lion on the other hand. Entrance into the Vytal Festival was a real treat, but Leonardo's been sending Salem all sorts of information for a very, very long time. Isn't that right, Professor?"
"Stop it." Leo demanded.
"It was you." Qrow hissed. "You sit on the Mistral Council. You had information on every Huntsman and Huntress in the Kingdom, and you gave it all to her."
"I-,"
"I couldn't find any of them, because you let her kill them!"
Lionheart said nothing as Cinder continued.
"Aw now, don't beat yourself up about it, Lionheart. I'm sure Tyrian and Hazel would've found them on their own eventually."
"What is wrong with you?" Jaune demanded, his head hung low. "How can you be so broken inside? To take so many lives, and then come here and rub it in our faces like it's something to be proud of !?"
Everyone looked at the blonde boy, worried.
"Jaune." Nora almost warned.
"All with that damn smile on your face!"
Ruby, Yang, and (Y/N) all prepared to fight, but Qrow once again stopped them.
"Everybody, stay calm!"
Jaune didn't listen. "I'm gonna make you pay for what you did! Do you hear me!"
"Kid!"
Qrow had pretty much lost control of the situation as everyone else drew their weapons. Cinder kicked off the battle with one line.
"Who are you again?"
Everything was downhill from there. Jaune blindly charged Cinder who cockily blocked him with a sword she summoned.
"Jaune!" Ruby yelled as she ran to help, jumping into the air.
Emerald threw her chain sickle at her and knocked her to the ground, smirking.
"You're not getting-,"
She didn't finish as she was immediately sucker punched by a very speedy and even angrier (Y/N).
"Don't you touch my sister!" He threatened as he jumped back to Ruby to protect her in case the others tried something.
Yang, seeing both of her little siblings in the fray, ran in to help only to be blocked by Mercury.
"Hey there, blondie. I'm thinking you owe me an apology for my leg, don't you think?"
Growling, Yang looked to (Y/N) who gave her a strong nod.
"Yang, really break his legs this time."
She nodded in agreement and charged. Believing Yang could handle herself, and seeing Weiss and Qrow pair off with the other stranger and Raven respectively, while Ren and Nora took on the big guy, (Y/N) focused his attention on Emerald. The two circled each other in a tense standoff. Any pretense was out the window as the young dragon let out a growl of intimidation. Emerald felt slightly unnerved seeing such a bloodthirsty look on the usually lovable and peaceful little dragon, but she couldn't care now. As the two prepared to charge each other, Ruby suddenly got up and grabbed his shoulder. (Y/N) looked at her in surprise before Ruby faced him towards Jaune and Cinder.
"Help him."
Without hesitation, he nodded and flew towards those two. Emerald tried to latch on to him with her sickles, but Ruby blocked her and forced her concentration on her. It was a good thing Ruby sicked the dragon on the Fall Maiden as she had just tossed Jaune to the ground and began laughing.
"I'm starting to remember you, you're the dense one that can't tell when he's out of his league."
In that moment, (Y/N) struck her in the head with an axe kick. She yelped and stumbled back as (Y/N) got between her and his friend.
"And you're the dumb one who can't even tell when a nine year old sneaking up on her." He snarked as he helped Jaune to his feet. "Jaune, I've got your back."
"Thanks, (Y/N),"
Cinder growled at the small boy before giving him an unnerving smile.
"(Y/N), how nice of you to join us. Such a shame this reunion couldn't have happened sooner."
(Y/N) took position. "Don't start with me. Remember what happened to your buddy Tyrian."
"Ah yes. What a shame you so violently rejected the invitation. Our lady was so looking forward to meeting you."
"Whatever that witch wants with me, she can forget it! The only one who gets to choose who I point my claws at is me!"
Cinder struck out at him, but was blocked by his blades. Jaune also came up to assist and together, they both pushed her back. Not caring about anything else this monster had to say, (Y/N) launched a furious counterattack on the Fall Maiden, full of jabs, kicks, tail whips, and gauntlet shots. Cinder was trying to toy with Jaune, but (Y/N) made sure she didn't have much opportunity. She wasn't able to hit him, but his attacks weren't adding up to much thanks to the Maiden powers. Eventually, she got tired of this and tried fire blasting the both of them, and while Jaune got the hell out of dodge, (Y/N) took it point blank with his wings and didn't even flinch.
He smirked when he unfurled them. "Really? Using fire on a dragon? That's just dumb."
"Well haven't we gotten cheeky."
"Trauma will do that to you."
The two boys continued their double team assault until they heard Weiss scream in pain. Skidding from another attack, they saw Weiss's aura had depleted. They froze and (Y/N) didn't know what to do. Should he abandon Jaune who would surely be killed to save his sister? Cinder took advantage of their confusion.
"Are you both going to let her die too?"
"Stop messing with me!" Jaune yelled.
"If that's what you want."
They all charged once again, but were stopped dead by a flash of blinding light and Ruby screaming. It ended prematurely as Emerald knocked out the silver eyed girl, but the damage was done. (Y/N) saw Cinder slump to the ground in pain, even though he and Jaune hadn't done much. She looked up in time to see Jaune stab at her with his sword. She narrowly dodged, revealing a horrifying covering of her left face and her missing eye. Jaune would've stumbled forward if not for the young dragon pulling him back, making sure he kept his balance. Cinder was angry now as flames appeared from her remaining eye.
"Did you think you actually had a chance against me!?"
(Y/N) then realized something. "You're scared of Ruby! She did something to you! Like she did to that giant Grimm!"
Cinder's expression changed for a split second, confirming the boy's suspicions, before going blood hungry and separating (Y/N) from Jaune. She wildly slashed at him, but traveling through the dense forests had trained him well as he weaved through her attacks before perching on the railings above.
"You know, for a magical Maiden, you have bad aim!"
Cinder growled, before grinning. "Really now? Let's test that."
She pulled out a spear this time, and (Y/N) readied himself to evade. However, he wasn't the target. In a split second, Cinder threw the spear.
Right at Weiss.
The weapon impaled the Schnee in her side and for a moment, there was stillness before she collapsed.
"WEISS!" Jaune yelled as he ran to her.
(Y/N) felt numb as Cinder smirked up at him as she turned to walk away.
Big mistake.
(Y/N) let out a roar that shook the room. The boy had roared before, but this was something different. This was a roar which was fitting for one who was called a dragon. It was a roar that put even the Grimm dragon to shame. One that threatened to shatter the windows. Cinder turned in time to be met with a furious (Y/N). The boy had abandoned all his training and style and opted instead to viciously claw at his hated enemy's face. If Cinder didn't have Aura, she would've been mutilated. Still, it burned as if (Y/N) had heated his claws for hours on end. Eventually, the Fall Maiden pried him off her and threw him away. (Y/N) landed on all fours and roared at her again, his teeth long and salivating, his claws tearing the ground beneath him, and most frightening of all, his eyes lacking any sort of emotion beyond unrestrained rage and hatred. This was no longer (Y/N), but a feral animal. Emerald quickly put herself between (Y/N) and Cinder, but she felt herself shaking. She was horrified by the transformation this boy she had a soft spot for had undertaken. (Y/N) either didn't recognize her, or he just didn't care, as he charged in at blitzing speed. Emerald dodged and watched as he easily cracked the wall he slammed into. He was unfazed and turned back, snarling at her.
Oscar, who had thoroughly owned Lionheart, began demanding answers from Ozpin as he ran to Ruby.
"What's wrong with him!?"
"He's gone into a blind rage." Oz answered back.
"I can see that!"
"No, this is what I was warning him about! It's his base instincts acting."
"Well, how do we calm him down?!"
"Get Ms Rose. He needs someone he trusts right now!"
Oscar slid to a halt, desperately shaking Ruby with Nora also there.
"Ruby! Ruby, get up! We need you! (Y/N) needs you!" Ruby slowly opened her eyes and gave a groan as Oscar smiled. "Ruby! You-,"
"OZPIN!" the big guy yelled. Oscar raised his head as he heard the old man mutter.
"Oh no."
"You thought you could hide from me!?" He tore off his shirt and pulled out two yellow dust crystals. "You'll pay for what you did, you'll die over and over again!"
Continuing the trend of horrifying things that day, he stabbed himself with the crystals in his arms and the dust began flowing through his veins. He roared, and while it didn't match up to (Y/N)'s, he had the massive size to make up for it. Oscar, who was terrified, just stood there with the cane.
"Do-do we fight?"
"No, run!"
He dove at the fourteen year old, luckily Qrow was there to yank him to safety. As this went on, Yang and Mercury were still going at it, and (Y/N) was dangerously close to ripping Emerald's throat out, the stranger, Raven, and Cinder headed towards the vault. While Cinder would love to kill Ruby while she was still dazed, Raven rightfully pointed out that she'd have the wrath of the feral dragon boy to deal with first. Deciding it wasn't worth it right now, (and not at all because she was still reeling from him almost ripping off the other half of her face) Cinder followed the other two down to the vault, which was opened by Lionheart. Yang tried to stop them, under the insistence of Nora, but was blocked off by Mercury. He tried to taunt her again, but was cut off as Emerald regrouped with him with the still wild (Y/N) on her tail. The villains nodded to each other as Emerald activated her semblance, making several Mercury's appear. (Y/N) snarled at all of them. Yang, still on her knees, took a deep breath, trying to figure out what to do.
Then she got an idea.
She snatched (Y/N), holding him in a hug. He thrashed about, trying to attack. Yang jumped away as the clones attacked. She spoke softly to the boy.
"(Y/N). (Y/N), I need you to calm down." The boy hissed and thrashed, but Yang held on. "(Y/N) please! I need your eyes!"
Yang continued to evade their enemies as her brother tried to get ahold of himself. The boy took deep breaths, his snarling and growling fading. Eventually, he went slightly limp.
"(Y/N)?"
"What do you need?" His voice was tired and breathless, but he was all there.
She put him on her back and positioned him so he could see their opponents.
"Switch to soul vision and tell me what you see."
Still dizzy from his outburst, he followed her directions. With his second sight on, the clones vanished and he realized what Yang was trying to do.
"Second to the left!" He yelled as Mercury charged.
Yang hooked him with her robotic arm as he went skidding, Emerald in disbelief. Yang smiled at her brother.
"I guess Emerald's tricks don't work on your sight!"
He nodded. "Right!" He then smirked at Mercury. "Aww, what's wrong dum dum? Can't hide behind Emerald anymore? Guess you're gonna have to fight like a warrior like the rest of us!"
The older boy growled as he stood. "Says the runt clinging to his big sister."
The boy gave him a blank stare. "I'm nine, what's your excuse?"
He charged again, without illusions this time as they were pointless, backed up by Emerald's gunfire. Yang blocked him and (Y/N) flew off her back and headed straight for the girl. He landed, but he was still wobbly from before.
"(Y/N)!" Nora yelled from across the battlefield.
She and Qrow were a bit busy keeping the big guy, Hazel, from turning Oscar into a pancake while Ren, Jaune, and Ruby were trying to save Weiss, who Jaune had pulled to safety. The boy shook his head.
"I'm fine!" He yelled. "I can handle this."
Taking position once more, the two former friends circled each other.
"You can't mess with my eyes, Emerald." He warned, not even pulling out his blades. "You don't get to hide behind an illusion this time."
"I don't need it."
She jumped at him, but he easily rolled away to safety before countering with a jab. Emerald stumbled back at the force of it.
"Come on, (Y/N). I thought we were friends."
"You were my friend, Emerald. But you killed Penny and Pyrrha. You're no better than 'them'." The tensing muscles in his arms clearly showed the 'them' he was referring to. "But what annoys me the most, is the lies."
Emerald smirked. "Manipulating people, making them think I'm friendly? It's all part of the job." (Y/N) let out a half laugh. "You're good, you even fooled yourself."
She frowned. "What?"
"There was at least some truth to the things you said to me."
"Dream on!" Emerald yelled as she charged him.
(Y/N) stood his ground. "Fine, I'll prove it!"
As Emerald descended, she missed, and was shocked by the appearance of another (Y/N). Hastily, one decked her right in the face. Emerald reeled back in pain as the two stalked closer.
"I got my Semblance, and I know how it works. See, the charms are more than just memories, they're my bonds with others. I use them to call on my friends, people who I care about and care about me, so I can use their power. Remember this?" He pointed at the mirror charm. "This is the power you gave me. It wouldn't have worked if you didn't believe at least some of the things you said!"
"Shut up! You're being ridiculous! I don't give a damn about you!"
He smirked as he and the clone took position. "You should know better than to lie to me."
They all exchanged blows and Emerald quickly realized the clone wasn't actually solid, but their fast movements made it hard to keep track of the real one. Despite this, (Y/N) was slowly running out of steam. His previous outburst had done a number on his Aura and he couldn't maintain his Semblance for much longer. Luckily, Ruby took notice and jumped in as Emerald went in for a devastating attack. She smiled back at (Y/N), who returned it.
"Thanks, Ruby. You okay?"
"No, I'm angry. I've got this. Go catch your breath,"
Too tired to argue, (Y/N) ducked away as Ruby began her own vengeance filled counterattack on Emerald. He slumped on Jaune, and only then notice something weird going on with Weiss, who was, thank the gods, looking better.
"Is she okay?" He still asked.
Jaune nodded, not taking his hand off her wound. "Yeah, I think she is. Catch your breath, buddy. We still need you."
