Chapter 20: Confronting Shadows
(Y/N) leaned against Jaune as he watched Ruby and Yang fight Emerald and Mercury. He was about to jump in when he saw the assassin knock Ruby scythe from her hands, only for Ruby to headbutt him in the face.
"Kick his butt Ruby!" (Y/N) cheered.
Nora, who was guarding him, Jaune, and Weiss, took a quick glance at him.
"You guys doing okay?"
Jaune looked down, trying to assess if whatever he was doing to the wounded Schnee was working. She appeared to look better.
"I-I think so. She's coming to. I just wish this would go faster,"
"How bout you don't complain and just be thankful you unlocked your Semblance when you did," Nora shot back.
"My Semblance?"
"How do you think you're healing her dummy?" (Y/N) said through a smile.
"No," Jaune replied. "I don't think I'm healing her. Our Aura heals our bodies. It feels... it feels more like I'm using my Aura to amplify hers,"
"Wait, aren't you worried about running out?" Nora asked. Jaune smiled.
"Pyrrha once told me I've got a lot of it. I still believe her,"
At that moment, Weiss's eyes fluttered open. (Y/N) stumbled to her side.
"Weiss!" He said happily.
She looked at both boys in confusion.
"(Y/N)? Jaune?"
At that moment, (Y/N) heard Ren scream in pain. He had been hit by a lightning shot from Hazel.
"Ren!" Nora cried.
"Go!" The blonde ordered. "We've got her!"
"I'll help!" (Y/N) offered as he struggled to his feet. Nora shook her head.
"No, stay here,"
She ran towards Hazel as Weiss began to focus.
"Jaune...what's happening?"
"You took a heavy hit," the older boy explained. "You need to stay with us while the others fight,"
"That's...annoying" Jaune chuckled.
"Good to have you back, Weiss,"
Across the room, Qrow was knocked up a floor and then back down on the floor. Oscar/Ozpin was having similar problems, being knocked flat by Hazel after blocking Lionheart's attacks. Hazel growled at him.
"Hiding behind the face of a child? A monster like you must be stopped!"
Nora let out a war cry and leapt at the big guy before he caught her by the hammer and threw her to the ground. While she was recovering, he grabbed her by the head and be electrocuting her.
"How many children must die for you!?"
Unfortunately for the (hypocrite) large male, he didn't know about Nora's Semblance. The red head grabbed his wrist, overpowering his strength, before tossing him over her shoulder. As he laid there, Nora grabbed her hammer and gritted her teeth.
"His Semblance," Ozpin tried for explain. "He can block out pain, it's how he's able to handle injecting so much dust into his body,"
Nora gritted her teeth and glared at the man as he got up.
"I don't need him to hurt," He charged as she roared. "I just need him to GO DOWN!"
Nora also roar as she swung her hammer directly into Hazel, sending him through the front entrance. (Y/N) winced.
"I really hope he doesn't get back up from that,"
Taking a glance around the room, (Y/N) noticed everyone was struggling and gasping for air. They couldn't hold out much longer. Luckily, at that moment, something flashed from the window. A search light! Had someone called for backup? Weiss looked up.
"What's happening?"
"I'm not sure," Jaune answered. "How are you feeling?"
She smiled and sat up, toying with a glyph the size of her palm.
"Better. Much better," she nodded to the blonde before looking at the poor state her brother was in. "Help him, I'll handle this,"
Weiss got up and walked to the center of the room. (Y/N) tried to follow her, but felt Jaune grasp his arm and forced him to sit down. As the older boy worked to get the dragon's Aura back into decent shape, Weiss summoned an enormous glyph which then summoned a giant wasp like Grimm. She then directed it towards the ruined front entrance. Its stinger shot off and latched on to something before dragging Hazel back in, roughly. As Jaune pulled away, mostly satisfied with the boy's condition, it was then (Y/N) finally noticed the noise coming from outside. Was it the White Fang attacking the reinforcements? His answer came when someone unexpected walked in. Everyone turned in shock.
"Blake?" He whispered.
The cat faunus stared at them, namely Yang.
"Yang?"
The girl was in shock before Ruby turned and pointed at the open vault.
"Yang! (Y/N)! Go!"
The older sister bolted for the opening as (Y/N) shot up to follow her. Emerald dove at Yang to stop her, but missed. Mercury grabbed her fake arm, and while Yang's eyes turned red as she got ready to fight, they changed back immediately as she simply detached it and continued to run. (Y/N), not one to miss an opportunity, flying dropped kicked Mercury's face and stole back Yang's arm before they both plunged into the vault, Weiss covering them with a wall of ice. The two plummeted towards the bottom (well, Yang did. (Y/N) just dive bombed). The boy tossed her her arm before peering down the pit as Yang reattached her arm.As they fell, they began to hear rumbling which was getting louder. (Y/N) glided over to the wall and felt it. It was shaking.
"Something's happening down there!"
Yang rolled her eyes.
"Guess she chose the wrong allies,"
"What?"
Yang didn't answer and they fell into silence. Not long after, the shaking and noises stopped. Yang then positioned herself.
"We're getting close. Get ready,"
The two fell into a chamber, and as they approached the ground, (Y/N) saw the place was in shambles. He also saw Vernal lying dead and Raven opening the vault. She hadn't noticed their approach yet. Yang growled before slowing her descent with a shot her gauntlets, alerting the bandit who turned to she her daughter land a glare at her. (Y/N) swooped down next to her, weary of anything Raven might try. She just looked at them indifferently.
"I warned you, Yang," she finally said. "I gave you both every opportunity to walk away from Qrow and Oz. So you can believe me when I say this wasn't personal,"
Yang didn't even twitch.
"You opened the vault,"
"So that's what you were hiding," (Y/N) added. "You're the real Spring Maiden,"
"Thanks to the chaos you and your friends caused upstairs. I knew you could handle it," she turned away from Yang. "You're my daughter after all,"
"Qrow and Oz told us how the Maiden powers are transferred," Yang informed her. "The girl you found, she would've had to have trusted you if you were in her final thoughts, cared about you a lot,"
(Y/N) felt a chill in the air. There was an accusation in his sister's words. Raven shook her head, her back to them.
"I'm sure they told you plenty, and you just sat and obeyed,"
"No, I'm starting to ask questions like you said. So tell us, what happened to the last Spring Maiden? Did she die in battle? Was it sickness?"
The black haired woman turned around, her face fighting to hide something.
"What does it matter to you?"
(Y/N)'s eyes widened as he came to the realization. The words came back to him: it's not uncommon for a murderer to be in the victim's final thoughts.
"You didn't," he gasped as Yang also realized the truth.
"I can already see the answer. It's all over your face. How could you!?"
Raven crossed her arms.
"She was scared when we found her! Weak. No matter how much training I put her through, she never learned! She wasn't cut out for this world! And with those powers, she would've been hunted her entire life! What I did-," Yang cur her off.
"Wasn't personal,"
"It was mercy!"
Which is it, mom?" Yang demanded as (Y/N) backed away, knowing this wasn't his fight. "Are you merciful, or are you a survivor? Did you let me walk into that trap because you knew I could handle it, or because it meant you could get what you wanted?"
"It's not that simple! You don't know me, you don't know what I've been through, the choices I've had to make!"
"You're right, I don't know you," Yang placed herself between Raven and the vault. "I only know the Raven Dad told me about. She was troubled, and complicated, but she fought for what she believed in, whether it was her team or her tribe! Did you kill her too?"
Raven glanced away for a moment before her eyes flared with the Spring Maiden powers.
"I've stared death in the face over and over again, and every time I've spat in that face and survived, because I'm strong enough to do what others won't!"
"Oh shut up!" Yang circled her again. "You don't know the first thing about strength! You turn your back on people, you run away when things get too hard, you put others in harm's way instead of yourself!" Yang clenched her fist. "You might be powerful, but that doesn't make you strong,"
Raven exploded.
"Who do you think you are, lecturing me!? Standing there, shaking like a scared little girl!"
"Yeah,I'm scared, but I'm still standing here! I'm not like you," she marched up to her mother. "I won't run. Which is why you're going to give us the Relic,"
"And why would I-,"
"Because you're afraid of Salem! And if you thought having Maiden powers put a target on your back, imagine what she'll do when she finds out you have a Relic," Raven turned away as the reality came crashing down on her. "She'll come after you with everything she had. Or she can come after me," she turned her head back in shock. "And I'll be standing there, waiting for her,"
The two came face to face.
"You don't want to do this, Yang,"
"Nope...but I'm gonna do it anyway,"
The blonde pushed past her mother roughly and marched for the vault, Raven watching as she went. The both paused before (Y/N) saw something hit the ground in front of Raven.
Tears, they were tears. Raven was crying.
She grabbed her sword.
"I-I'm sorry,"
"Yeah...me too,"
Before the dragon's eyes, she disappeared into one of her portals, leaving behind a feather. Yang continued into the vault, but the immense weight of the emotions, the years of neglect and pain that just burst from her in one fell swoop, weighed her down. As she grabbed the lamp like Relic, her knees buckled and she collapsed, crying. She then felt a small hand on her shoulder. She flinched slightly, forgetting her brother was there the whole time.
"(Y/N)?"
The boy said nothing and just hug her, wrapping her in his wings. The comforting heat broke down whatever control she had left and Yang just broke down. Not a word was spoken between them, (Y/N) just let her cry, just like she had down for him when he had those nightmares on Patch. After a while, Yang ceased before (Y/N) let her go. She stood up and pulled him in for another quick hug.
"I'm really glad you're here (N/N),"
He smiled.
"You did the same for me,"
The two returned to the elevator and made the climb back up. It was quiet. Eventually, they came back and saw the battle had paused to see them. Ruby smiled again them, but the two of them focused on Blake, who had obviously joined the fight. Her eyes darted for a second, before returning to them. (Y/N) saw Emerald collapse as Mercury and Hazel backed towards the entrance. Mercury whispered something to her. The green haired girl glanced around before screaming. The room then went dark as smoke bellowed around them. (Y/N) was about to dive down and push it away with his wings when the smoke suddenly formed into a terrifying creature that resembled a woman, but with twisted limbs and fingers and Grimm markings on her face. It shrieked and revealed pitch black eyes with only red pupils before it dove at them. When it was over, (Y/N) realized he was shaking, and clinging to Yang. He felt as scared as he had been when Team RWBY had first found him. He had barely noticed their enemies had escaped.
"Wha-what was that?" Blake asked shakily.
"An illusion," Ozpin answered as everyone stared at him. "But an accurate one. That...was Salem,"
Yang and (Y/N) ran down the stair and reconvened with the others. Qrow was down there to greet them and take he Relic
"What happened?"
They glanced at each other.
"We don't know exactly," was all Yang said. "When we got down there, Cinder was gone, and Vernal was dead,"
"And Raven?
"Gone," (Y/N) answered.
"Well, we're all glad you're still here firecracker. You too firebreather,"
Ruby suddenly slumped over. Luckily, (Y/N) was still in better shape than the others, thanks to Jaune, and caught her before she hit the ground.
"Whoa!"
"Are you okay?" Weiss asked worryingly. Ruby took a deep breath as she sat down.
"I feel like I should be asking you guys,"
Blake, who had been conversing with who looked like her parents, a stranger, and Sun, walked up to the them as they all took a seat. Ruby looked up to see her.
"So Blake, what are you doing here?"
"I-," Blake tried to answer. "I was gonna ask you three the same thing,"
"That's...a loooong story,"
"Well, we're not going anywhere,"
(Y/N) couldn't take it anymore and dove at her, crying.
"We missed you," was all he said.
Blake kissed his head gently.
"I missed you all, too,"
"We're here together," Ruby said. "That's all that matters,"
"Yeah," Yang agreed. Weiss then offered an arm to Blake and (Y/N) and pulled them into the hug. They sat in silence. The rest of the world didn't matter right now.
What mattered was that their family was whole again.

Bonus (Didn't see this coming, did ya?)
(Y/N) glanced around the ruined wreck of the main hall as the older kids talked to the police and the Faunus militia. He then turned to Oscar, who had turned, lost consciousness, and only was barely conscious now.
"What happened to Lionheart?"
Oscar sighed.
"Probably holed up in office. I bet the police are gonna have a fun time trying to get him out, even without them knowing the truth,"
The boy glanced at the dual doors that Oscar was now looking at.
"I'll get him. I still have a good chunk of Aura, thanks to Jaune,"
"I don't think it's a good idea. He's still a trained huntsman, (Y/N),"
He rolled his eyes playfully.
"He's probably just as banged up as the rest of us, and between you and me, the only reason he didn't get the pulp beat out of him in that last fight is because he was hiding behind Hazel,"
The farmhand chuckled.
"Maybe. Still, you should at least wait for your sisters,"
He promptly ignored Oscar and headed for the doors.
"It's fine! I'll be back before they even notice!"
Before the older boy could argue, (Y/N) was already heading through the doors, towards where the headmaster's office was (Oz told them back at the house). He banged loudly on the door.
"Lionheart! Your friends are gone, come out and we won't hurt you!"
He didn't hear anything except a strange noise, like hissing and creaking. (Y/N) turned to soul vision, but saw nothing and he started to smell a very familiar metallic sense. He should've turned around right there, but he didn't. He, in some form of madness, opened the door. The room was dark, but the reek of blood was unmistakable. With his sharp eyes, he saw Professor Lionheart's body, lifeless and skewered several times over. Above it was a Grimm he'd never seen before. It kinda reminded him of an octopus, but the head was a glass orb and the tendrils were razor sharp and covered in blood. The Grim hissed at him, but his reflexes were faster as he shot a blast from his gauntlets, cracking the sphere and making the Grimm fall over dead. He took a breath of relief before turning to report back to the group, but he was stopped. The room, somehow, felt darker, and he could feel eyes on him. Swirling around (Y/N) heart froze at the sight of the woman standing above the dead Grimm. She looked exactly like the woman Emerald had conjured, but less twisted. However, she was just as intimidating. He wanted to back away, but her gaze kept him glued to the spot. She then smirked at him.
"(Y/N)," her voiced sounded normal. "So we finally meet. I assume you know who I am,"
"You're Salem," He forced his voice not to crack under the fear.
"Good, you do know me. Well done defeating my subordinate. Quite impressive for a boy. But then," she glanced at his wings. "Your kind has always impressed me,"
He got into a defensive position.
"Whatever you want, I'm not gonna listen! I won't fall for your lies!"
"(Y/N), I don't lie, unlike Ozpin,"
He gritted his teeth.
"At least I know Ozpin didn't kill other dragon faunus! Raven told me you like to hunt us!"
She sighed.
"I suppose, but I only ever did it to those who rose up against me, which was frustratingly many. However, you've peeked my interest, despite your unruly behavior,"
"What are you talking about!?"
She moved closer.
"You're special (Y/N). Not only are you powerful, but you've already developed the abilities that would've come to dragons twice your age,"
"So what!? I don't care! Because of you, people I love got hurt or died! I won't stop until Remnant is safe from you!"
She turned her back to him.
"So young, so naive...you remind me of...someone," for a split second, there was a crestfallen look in her eye before it returned to its confident one. "I look forward to seeing your growth, (Y/N). Don't disappoint me. Perhaps next time, we could meet in person,"
Like that, she was gone, and (Y/N) sank to the floor, shaking. He had only just realized he was holding his breath. As he gathered his thoughts, he heard footsteps and heard Qrow and Yang call out for him.
"I'm in here!" He finally yelled as he steadied his voice. He glanced at Lionheart's corpse, feeling sick. "I found Lionheart,"
And finally, we can move on to Volume 6!.....

Or should we?
Considering Volume 8 shows shit hitting the fan and no break in sight, I was think of having a few bonus chapters which take place in the month long interval between Volume 5 and 6. These chapters will have the group discovering more about (Y/N)'s past and more about the dragon faunus. What you may ask? Well, you'll find out if you guys want me to do the chapter! Also, I've decided, going forward, considering the bonus scene, Yang's route will be considered canon.
