Chapter 11: The Fight for our Lives
(Y/N) stared at the screen in horror, seeing Penny torn to pieces. Tears ran down his face as he whimpered.
"Penny...?" Yang quickly put the scroll down and tried to snap him out of it.
"(Y/N)! (Y/N)!" He shook his head, as if he were just realizing she was there. He looked at her, more afraid than he had ever been.
"Yang?" She hugged him.
"It's going to be alright,"
"No, it's not," as if to prove his point, a sinister and familiar female voice began speaking through the scroll.
"This is not a tragedy. This was not an accident. This is what happens when you hand over your trust, your safety, your children, to men who claim to be our guardians, but are, in reality, nothing more than men,"
"Cinder," (Y/N) hissed as Yang ran towards the window. His feet were firmly planted to the ground as her voice continued to taunt him.
"Our Academies' head, asters wield more power than most armies and one was audacious enough to control both. They cling to power in the name of peace, and yet, what do we have here? One nation's attempt at a synthetic army, mercilessly torn apart by another's star pupil. What need would Atlas have for a soldier disguised as an innocent little girl? I don't think the Grimm can tell the difference. And what, I ask you, is Ozpin teaching his students? First dismemberment, now this?" (Y/N) clenched his teeth and fisted his hands until his palms bleed from his claws digging into his skin. He neither felt it or cared. In that one moment, he understood.
He understood what it meant to hate someone. To loath them and wish the worst of fates upon them. To want nothing but see them pay for their crimes.
But as quickly as it came, it vanished, and he was left with one solitary and horrible truth: this was his fault. He knew something was wrong with Cinder, but he was too much of a coward to say anything! And now Yang was framed, Penny was dead, and the Kingdom was in danger, all because he was too afraid to tell Ozpin anything! As Cinder continued to talk, (Y/N) cried, the guilt eating him alive.
"Huntsmen and Huntresses should carry themselves with honor and mercy, yet I have witness neither. Perhaps Ozpin felt as though defeating Atlas in the Tournament would help people forget his colossal failure to protect Vale when the Grimm invaded its streets. Or perhaps, this was his message to the tyrannical dictator that has occupied an unsuspecting Kingdom with armed forces. Honestly? I haven't the slightest clue as to who is right and who is wrong. But I know that the existence of peace is fragile, and the leaders of our Kingdoms conduct their business with iron gloves. As someone who hails from Mistral, I can assure, the situation there is equally undesirable. Our Kingdoms are at the brink of war, yet we, the citizens, are left in the dark. So I ask you, when the first shots are fired, who do you think you can trust?" The screen went to static and (Y/N) heard the Grimm sirens from their room.  (Y/N) fell to his knees.
"I did this," he thought. "This is all my fault!" Yang shook him hard.
"(Y/N) we have to go!"
"W-what?" Yang didn't waste time and quickly scooped him up and put him on her back. She bolted out the door and down the hall. Using his soul vision, (Y/N) saw a force of people moving suspiciously and he heard the call of Grimm in the halls.
"Yang, someone's letting Grimm in!" She picked up the pace and caught sight of familiar white masks outside the windows. She growled and picked up her scroll. After trying to call Ruby, she then passed her scroll to the boy as it began to ring. It was Blake.
"Yang, are you and (Y/N) okay?"
"We're fine!" (Y/N) said shakily.
"Is Ruby with you?" Yang asked over her shoulder. "She's not answering her scroll!"
"No she isn't," the faunus girl answered back. Yang stopped. "Yang I'm sure she's fine. She's out leader, she can take care of herself,"
"Right," she began to run again. "We're heading to the docks near the courtyard. White Fang are releasing Grimm into the school!"
"The White Fang is here!?" Blake inquired before Yang rounded a corner and came face to face with a bunch of Grimm. (Y/N) climbed off her and got ready to fight. The Grimm snarled at them.
"Yang! (Y/N)!" A Grimm pounced at (Y/N), but was knocked away by Yang who called out.
"Got to go! Be careful!" They ended the call and Yang stepped in front of (Y/N).
"(Y/N) go find a place to hide!" He stomped his foot.
"No! I'm not gonna let you fight alone!" He flew in front of her and breathed a massive stream a fire. It killed a couple of the smaller Grimm and burnt the other.
"It's too dangerous for you here!" Yang insisted as she decked an Ursa Major that came charging and sent it flying.
"I can fight too! I have to protect this place!" Yang looked at him worriedly, but (Y/N) met her gaze with confidence.
"This is what you trained me for," She smiled and nodded.
"Alright, but stay close to me,"
Together, the two tore through the hordes of Grimm to get to their destination and Yang cursed her and her team for not getting (Y/N) some sort of weapon sooner. He kept up, but he was nowhere near as skilled as her, so he was forced to fight more a distance with his fire and fly out of danger. Whenever a Grimm got too close, his claws were enough to push them back, but Yang could tell his aura would deplete soon. He didn't have the stamina to keep this up. Fueled by her desire to protect her brother, Yang flew into a rage and slaughter every Grimm unfortunately enough to meet her. Her outrage eventually cleared the room and they began to make their advance when everything began to shake. Yang stumbled a bit while (Y/N) hovered to avoid it. Looking out the window, he saw Mountain Glenn also shaking in the distance. He looked back at Yang scared.
"Yaaaang," he said while pointing at the mountain. In a heartbeat, a giant dragon (the subtitles do refer to this as a dragon, even though it's technically a wyvern) burst from the mountain and flew directly at the school, screaming loudly in the night.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me," Yang growled under her breath before grabbing the collar of (Y/N)'s shirt and pulling him. "Come on!"
They raced out into the courtyard and saw everyone staggering as a Paladin charged them, only short circuit and fall flat right before them. (Y/N) then caught sight of Weiss struggling, leaning on her sword.
"Weiss!" He called before flying over to her and hugging her. She eagerly returned it.
"Oh you're safe!" Yang ran up to them.
"You're okay! Have you heard from Ruby?" The heiress shook her head. "What about Blake?" She weakly pointed behind the blonde.
"She went after an Alpha, and some members of the White Fang,"
"You look for Ruby. We'll meet up with Blake,"
"Yeah!" (Y/N) agreed.
"Look out for him!" Weiss warned. Yang nodded.
"Of course!" The two ran and rounded a corner. They fought off the small Grimm that attacked them.
"Blake!" (Y/N) called out as they neared the cafeteria. "Where are you!?"
"Blaake!" Yang joined him. (Y/N) looked into cafeteria and saw Blake laying on the ground, terrified, and a red haired male with a bright red sword standing over her. He switched to soul vision, and saw that like Cinder, his souls was dark and outlined by blood red. He stabbed Blake, causing her to cry out.
"Blake!" (Y/N) yelled. It caught Yang's attention and she saw what the stranger had done.
"Get away from her!" Yang warned him. The stranger did not move and (Y/N) felt Yang ignite beside him and burst forward at him. Everything then happened in slow motion. Yang charged at the male and he grabbed his sword. Before anyone knew what had happened, Yang was on the ground unconscious, her right arm completely severed. (Y/N)'s eyes flooded with tears.
"YANG!" He cried as he ran to her side, ignoring the stranger. He shook her, trying to get her to wake up, desperately ignoring the empty space where her arm was once. The world around him grew quiet as all his attention was focused on Yang. He didn't hear the stranger's footsteps approach him. He couldn't hear Blake desperately pleading with Adam to leave him alone, that he was innocent faunus child, that he had nothing to do with this. (Y/N) could only hear the ringing in his ears. Adam unsheathed his sword once more as Blake cried.
"(Y/N)!" In that second, the ringing became a roar as (Y/N) felt something snap inside him, and though no one could see it, one of the charms hanging from his bracelet, Yang's charm, glowed red. Adam swung his sword down, but (Y/N) caught it, his hand now clawed and scaled, stopping the weapon dead in it's tracks. For a moment, there was stillness as Adam tried to comprehend what had happened as blood flowed from the boy's palm, but (Y/N) didn't give him the courtesy of recovering. The boy whipped his head at the White Fang member in a menacing snarl, his teeth long and sharp, and his eyes burning with an intense hatred Blake had never seen on him before. With a new found strength, (Y/N) pulled Adam off his feet and began mercilessly slamming him into the ground (Uh, Hulk/Loki style for reference). Adam was too stunned to know what was happening as (Y/N) sent him flying across the room. Adam got back to his feet as (Y/N) sent a giant flame straight for him, bigger and hotter than anything he had ever done by leagues. Weiss's charm was now glowing. Adam barreled out of the way as  (Y/N)'s fire melted everything it touched and a in second, (Y/N) speed at him, Ruby's charm now glowing as well, and he punched the older male so hard, he went through the stone wall. (Y/N) roared furiously and Blake laid there in disbelief, amazed at what this tiny boy had just done. But it was too much. The glowing stopped and (Y/N) staggered before his aura broke and he fell to the floor unconscious. His outburst had depleted his remaining aura. Blake willed herself up and limped to (Y/N), quickly checking his wounds. Miraculously, save for a the bare minimum, he was completely fine, just exhausted. The cat faunus wasted no time. Adam would recover soon, and even if (Y/N) somehow woke up, he wouldn't be able to fight the older boy this time. With her remaining strength, she put the dragon in her back and pulled him and Yang to the safety of the docks.
(Timeskip)
(Y/N) woke up dizzy and exhausted. He clutched his head, groaning and not remembering what had happened. He glanced around and notice this wasn't the dorm. It was white and sterile and he could faintly make out a beeping sound.
Why was he here? The last thing he remembered was...
He shot up. The memories came flooding back to him and he swung off the bed.
"Yang!"
He raced out of the room, not noticing he had ripped out an IV and was now bleeding from the arm, as he tumbled blindly into a familiar face.
"(Y/N)!" Jaune said in surprise as he restrained the struggling boy.
"Yang!" He cried. "The man with the mask! Where is sh-," Nora, who was sitting nearby with Ren, rushed up to them to calm the boy down.
"(Y/N), it's okay, you're safe!"
"We're in a hospital," Ren tried to explain. (Y/N) still fought to get away.
"Yang! She was- it all happened so fast! I didn't know-!" Jaune forced the boy to look at him.
"(Y/N)! Yang is going to be fine. Ruby, Weiss, and Blake are also here. It's okay now," the little boy heaved airs into his lungs as he began to cool down. He still looked for his family.
"Where are they?"
"We'll take you to them," Jaune replied as he led the boy down the hall. Outside one of the rooms, Tai Yang, Blake, and Weiss sat in melancholy silence, not looking at one another.
"Blake? Weiss? Tai?" They all looked up. Blake ran to (Y/N) hugged him. She was bandaged around her waist.
"You're awake! Thank goodness you're awake!"
"Blake? Wh-what happened?" Weiss walked up to them.
"(Y/N), what do you remember before you lost consciousness?" He thought for a moment.
"I...I remember...the Grimm and the White Fang attack the school. I remember...going to the cafeteria and...and-!" He couldn't finish. He broke away from Blake and searched for Yang. Tai got up.
"She's gonna be alright buddy. Ruby too,"
"But...did it happen? Did she loose-?" Tai nodded slowly.
"Yeah, she lost her arm," (Y/N) gulped.
"I-it happened so fast. I didn't know what was going on until I saw her lying there and...that man. How did we get away?" Everyone looked at each other uncomfortably. "What? What's wrong?" Blake grabbed his shoulders.
"(Y/N), do you remember what happened after Yang lost her arm,"
"I-I ran up to her...and I tried to wake her up. And that's it. I blacked out after," the cat faunus shook her head.
"No (Y/N) you didn't,"
"Blake told us," Weiss explained. "That man from the White Fang, Adam, he tried to kill you, but you stopped him," he step back in shock.
"What!? No I didn't!" Blake grabbed his hand and opened it. There was a new scar on his palm.
"This is from you catching the sword. After, you threw him around like a rag doll and breathed fire hot enough to melt stone. Then you sent him flying through a wall,"
"Th-that couldn't have happened," (Y/N) said in disbelief. Tai tapped him on the back.
"But it did (Y/N). You saved both of their lives,"
"But...I don't remember doing it. How could I not remember doing it?!"
"Instinct," Ren reasoned. "You were in a stressful scenario and in danger. Your mind could process what was happening, so your body compensated and acted on its own,"
"But doesn't explain how he got that strength boost," Weiss pointed out. "He must've been tired by that point. And he's never been able to do things like that during training!"
"Little fire breather here unlocked his semblance," a voice stated from behind them. Everyone turned to see Qrow approaching with Ironwood. "Oz told me a couple of things to expect from his powers, but he never said anything about this. So, it's gotta be his semblance,"
"I...I unlocked my semblance? But how?" Ironwood stepped forward.
"It's very common for semblances to be unlocked during stressful scenarios. Your body unlocked your semblance as last ditch defense mechanism and luckily, you managed to catch your opponent off guard,"
"Don't think you'll get lucky again kid," Qrow warned. Ironwood knelt and met (Y/N)'s gaze.
"I...owe you and Ms. Xiao Long an apology. It seems you were right about Mercury. He and his teammates mysteriously disappeared right after the accident and we've checked in with Haven. They aren't students there. You have better instincts than I gave you credit for," (Y/N) looked away.
"It's fine, I wouldn't have believed me either," he then looked at the door to the room. "What's...gonna happen to Yang?"
"I'll have my best scientists work on a replacement arm," Ironwood stated while looking at his hand. It was only then that (Y/N) realized his hand, no, his entire arm was mechanical. "I know the hardships she'll be facing better than anyone,"
"Can I see her?" Qrow shook his head.
"Not now kid, she needs to rest,"
"Oh...wait, what happened to Ruby?" He looked around and didn't see the hyperactive leader. Weiss ran her fingers through her hair.
"She did something. She somehow managed to stop the dragon Grimm attacking Beacon,"  (Y/N)'s eyes widened.
"She beat it?! All by herself!? It was so huge though!"
"I wouldn't say she beat it," Tai corrected. "But it's frozen now, and it can't hurt anyone, but Grimm are still swarming the school, so it's still not safe,"
"What about Vale?"
"Vale has been secured," Ironwood assured, "But the school will take time," (Y/N) sighed in relief.
"Good," Weiss nudged him back towards his room.
"Come on you, we better find a doctor to fix that scratch," the kids led (Y/N) back, but before he stepped back into his room, he noticed someone was missing.
"Hey, where's Pyrrha?" Everyone froze, in terrified silence. (Y/N) could feel something wrong, something sinister. Nora held back tears and Weiss tried reign in her emotions.
"Uh, (Y/N), Pyrrha is..."
"I'll tell him," Jaune cut in. His voice was uncharacteristically grim. "(Y/N), come with me," the boy nodded and followed the older male, not looking back to see the devastated faces of the others. Jaune walked for a while, long after they were out of everyone's sight. He stopped in front of a door.
"Jaune, where is Pyrrha?" (Y/N) asked again, innocently. Jaune couldn't look at him.
"Come here," he pulled the boy closer. "Pyrrha...isn't here,"
"Well, where is she? When is she coming back?"
"Never," (Y/N) felt hurt.
"Why not? Doesn't she like us anymore?" Jaune looked at him with pity. (Y/N), even though he had been through so much, he still didn't understand.
"Of course she loves you (Y/N), and she'll always love. But she's gone now?"
"Can't I go visit her?" He asked. The blonde male shook his head. "We went to visit Tai Yang on Patch, we can go visit Pyrrha then," Jaune snapped.
"Don't you get it!? She's dead (Y/N)! You're never gonna her again! You're never gonna hear her or hug her, ever again!" Jaune huffed for air before realizing what he had just said. He looked at (Y/N), who's eyes were blown widen in heartbreak and sadness and tears streaming down his cheek. He back up slowly, shaking his head.
"No..." Jaune reached for him.
"(Y/N), I'm-," The boy back away faster.
"No. You're lying. You're lying! Pyrrha! PYRRHA!" (Y/N) sprinted out the door and into the night. Jaune called out for him.
"(Y/N) wait!" The dragon boy was already flying off and disappearing into the darkness. Jaune raced back inside to find the others.
"Guys help! (Y/N) took off!"
"What!?" Blake said scared.
"Why did run away?" Tai asked. Jaune gripped his head.
"He-he didn't understand. I kept trying to tell him and he didn't get it, so I snapped at him and he just flew off," Jaune was now crying. He had already lost Pyrrha, he couldn't bare the idea of (Y/N) dying because of his weakness.
"We'll find him," Ironwood stated firmly. Qrow nodded.
"Well we better move. With the state he's in, he'll be a homing beacon for Grimm," Everyone nodded, took off, and split up to search for the boy. Meanwhile, (Y/N), who was still weak from the battle, collapsed not to far from the hospital. He curled up crying, thinking Pyrrha.
"Pyrrha...I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" He blocked everything out and cried, begging a ghost for forgiveness.
"(Y/N)?"
He looked up and saw a hand reaching out to him.
