Chapter 18: Two Needed Talks
(Y/N) tossed around in bed, reaching out for Ruby to cuddle up to her. Realizing his silver eyed sister wasn't there,       (Y/N) sat up and rubbed his eyes.
"Ruby?"
He yawned as he stretched and rolled out of bed. He dragged his feet as he walked into the hallway, guided by the scent of coffee. He wandered into the kitchen and saw Weiss pouring the bitter drink into cups and placing them on a tray.
"Morning Weiss," He moaned through a yawn. The white haired girl turned around in surprise.
"(Y/N)! You shouldn't be up this early!"
He walked up to her and hugged her, leaning against her for support.
"Ruby wasn't there. Couldn't go back to sleep," the Schnee sighed before patting his head.
"You know, you're getting a bit too old for this,"
"No I'm not," he muttered into her clothes. She chuckled.
"I'm making coffee for Ruby and Yang, why don't you help me?"
"Okay,"
(Y/N) flew up and got the sugar from the cabinet and gave it to Weiss before getting the cream and milk from the fridge. Placing it on the counter, he sniffed the liquid before blanching.
"It smells really bitter,"
"Well that's point. Why don't try some?"
Hesitantly, the boy brought the drink to his lips and drank a tiny sip. He gagged.
"Blah! That tastes horrible!" Weiss smiled.
"It's an acquired taste, and it gives you plenty of energy,"
"Well I don't feel tired anymore. But I'm sticking with tea," She laughed and ruffled his hair.
"It's better for you anyways. Now, why don't you put some sugar and cream in Ruby's so it meets her sweet tooth's needs,"
"Got it!"
(Y/N) poured a massive amount of sugar and cream into the drink before setting it on the tray. Weiss picked it up and the two walked out into the backyard, finding Yang and Ruby talking.
"What are you doing up?" Ruby asked as her sister sat down next to her.
"Can't fall back asleep,"
"Eh, me either,"
"Well fortunately," Weiss interjected as she presented the tray. "Coffee exist,"
As she handed Yang her drink, (Y/N) sat next to Ruby and leaned his against her arm, like a puppy begging for pets. Ruby put her hands up as Weiss handed her a cup.
"No please!" Weiss smiled.
"Don't worry. (Y/N) put in blasphemous amounts of cream and sugar just for you," Ruby quickly perked up.
"Aww, yeah! Nice Weiss strikes again!"
The Schnee pulled the cup away at this.
"I will pour this on you and it will burn,"
She handed back the cup and Ruby laughed nervously. Weiss took a seat next to her leader and (Y/N), running her fingers through his hair.
"Can't believe we're in Mistral," Yang commented.
"That's what you can't believe?" Ruby asked in disbelief.
"Well yeah! And all the other magic and stuff, but...okay you know what I mean!"
"I honestly wasn't sure if I'd ever see you three again," Weiss admitted.
"Well, here's to defying expectations," Yang and Weiss cheered as (Y/N) moved his head to Ruby's lap. Ruby scratched his head happily before frowning.
"I just wish Blake could be here with us," (Y/N) looked up at her sadly. He missed Blake too.
"Yeah, well, she made her choice," Yang said harshly.
Ruby and Weiss looked at each other with wide eyes before Weiss looked over at the blonde.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I mean, she could have been here if she just stuck around. It's no big deal though. We'll be fine,"
"Don't you want her here?" Ruby asked.
"Why would I want her here?"
"Why do you keep lying when I'm around?" (Y/N) inquired.
"No soul vision,"
"I'm not using soul vision!"
"Are you...still mad at her for leaving?" Ruby asked her sister. Yang rolled her eyes.
"Oh. Whatever gave you that idea Ruby? No, I'm totally fine. I'm great," Weiss tried to deescalate the situation
"Okay. Calm down-," Yang whipped her head around, her eyes red.
"Don't tell me to calm down!" All three flinched back, Ruby being the only one brave enough to continue.
"Whoa, Yang," the blonde blinked, her eyes returning to normal as she realized she had gone to far. She stood up and walked away.
"Whatever,"
"You know, she might've left because she wanted to figure things out," (Y/N) suggested.
"She could've done it with us,"
"Says the girl who spent winter in her room!"
Yang shut the door, hard. The remaining girls looked at each other and then to (Y/N) who stared at the door in disappointment.
"You are playing with fire (Y/N)," Ruby warned. He flipped over.
"Don't care. I'm fireproof anyways,"
Weiss stared at the door before getting up.
"I'm gonna talk to her,"
"Alone? Are you sure?" Ruby asked.
"I'll be fine,"
Weiss headed inside as (Y/N) looked up at Ruby.
"Do you think she can convince her?"
"I think we just have to trust her,"
Ruby patted down his head before giving a light chuckle.
"Your horns are getting sharp. I won't be able to do this soon without cutting my palms," (Y/N) smiled.
"Nooo. I like it when you guys brush my hair!"
"Am I still gonna be doing this when you're bigger than I am?"
"Yes,"
They laughed as Ruby gave him a big hug.
"I really missed you (Y/N),"
"I missed you a lot too, Ruby," she sat him up.
"So, why were you up so late last night?" He smiled sheepishly.
"Oh, you noticed that?"
"Yeah, so?"
"Well, I couldn't sleep, so I went out stargazing. Or I tried to,"
"Tried to?"
"Oscar was out there,"
"Was he?"
"Yeah, he and I talk a bit,"
"About?"
"Stuff, Ozpin told me told me that Pyrrha and my parents would be proud of me," Ruby gave him another hug.
"I'm sure they are (Y/N),"
"Ruby..." he looked away. "I need to tell you something," she looked at him confused.
"What is it?"
"Well, the reason why I couldn't sleep...do you remember what Qrow told you about the Silver Eyed Warriors? About why there were so few of them?"
"Yes," She frowned. "Wait how did you know that?"
"I...may or may not have been listening through the wall. Sharp ears ya know!"
"Uh huh," Ruby clearly didn't buy it, but (Y/N) just coughed awkwardly.
"When we went to the bandit, Raven told me something similar, about the dragon Faunus, how something so powerful shouldn't be so rare, unless..." Ruby's eyes widened in realization.
"Someone was hunting them," the little dragon looked away.
"Yeah. So, I asked Ozpin last night if it were true, and if I should be afraid...and he said I should be,"
"That make something clear,"
"What do you mean?" Ruby sighed.
"You remember what I told you about that guy who attacked us on our way here? Tyrion?"
"Crazy scorpion guy?"
"Yeah. Well, he said that after catching me, he'd have to go looking for the other target. So he probably meant..." (Y/N) lowered his head.
"Me,"
"(Y/N)," He sat up with a determined look.
"I'm not gonna run from her. If she thinks I'm just gonna lay down with my tail tuck, she's dead wrong," Ruby hugged with a smile.
"That's our brave little dragon. And we'll make sure nothing happens to you," he hugged back.
"Thanks Ruby," She then stood up and held out a hand to him.
"Come on, let's go check on Weiss and Yang,"
(Y/N) nodded and followed his sister. Ruby knocked lightly and opened the door, seeing Weiss and Yang sitting on the bed, Weiss's hand on the blonde's shoulder.
"Is, uh, everything okay?" Yang and Weiss smiled at each other. Yang looked a lot better.
"Yeah. It is," Ruby sighed in relief.
"Good,"
(Y/N) pushed past her and sat next to Yang.
"Sooooo, no more being mad?"
"No more being mad," (Y/N) gave her a big wing hug.
"Good!"
(Timeskip)
The girls spent a good amount of time in the bedroom, until (Y/N) decided to get some tea. While in the kitchen, he could hear Qrow and who assumed was Ozpin talking in the living room. Carefully, he scooted closer to the entrance to listen in.
"Things aren't looking good Oz," Qrow admitted.
"Ever the optimist," Ozpin joked as he took a sip of something. "While I would not say our current predicament is...ideal, I think we can both agree that the situation could be much worse. Humanity is a resilient force,"
"Oz...Pro huntsmen like that don't just bite it all at once. Salem's powerful. It seems like her reach is growing by the day. What does that say about humanity?"
"That there are indeed a misguided few who have filled their hearts with malice. It doesn't take a great number of people to cause harm," (Y/N) unconsciously grabbed his arm at this. "But I still believe there are far more people in this world willing to prevent it,"
(Y/N) heard footsteps coming down the stairs as the males stopped for a moment.
"Um," it was Ruby. "Excuse me?"
"Ah, Miss Rose. Join us. You as well (Y/N),"
He gulped loudly and peaked out from behind the wall, blushing.
"Oh, you knew I was there?"
He walked over to Ruby as the professor nodded.
"Indeed. We were just about to gather everyone to discuss our next steps,"
"Oh, uh, great," Ruby said hesitantly as she and (Y/N) moved to stand in front of them.
"Something on your mind, kiddo?" Qrow inquired, noticing the hesitation in her voice.
"Uh, uh if...it's okay to ask?"
"Of course," her uncle assured.
"Well uh...we've been talking about the Relic at Haven...and the Spring Maiden, but what about the Fall Maiden?"
"Cinder?" Ozpin specified. (Y/N) nodded, realizing what Ruby wanted to ask.
"Do they have the Beacon relic?" Qrow and Oz looked at each other before the professor answered.
"Very astute, both of you. I was wondering who would be the first to ask," he shook his head. "No. Thankfully they do not. It's true that the Relic at Haven is very much at risk, and for now, that should remain our primary focus," He smiled slyly. "Let's just say I made finding the Relic at Beacon a...bit more challenging than at the other schools,"
Ruby sighed in relief.
"That's good to hear,"
"It is, but let's not forget the challenges that still lie before us," Ruby and (Y/N) both nodded. "Now, is there anything else we can help you with?"
"Oh, uh...Well, I did have one more question..."
"No, my cane is not a Relic,"
"I have no more questions," They all laughed.
"Yes, while this cane is indeed very precious to me, it is also just that- precious to me. While I admit it still has a few more tricks up its sleeve, I can firmly say that being a Relic isn't one of them. Now why don't you both run and get the other students?"
"On it!" (Y/N) opened his wings to fly, but Qrow's scroll buzzing stopped him.
The older male took out the device and took the call.
"Yeah? Okay... yeah, we'll be there," he hung up and put the scroll on the table.
"Who was it?" Ruby asked as her uncle sat back.
"It was Leo. Said he had a breakthrough with the council. Thinks he might be able to get together a small raiding party for the bandits. He wants us to meet up at the school tomorrow night to walk us through it," Ruby gasped happily while (Y/N) frowned, not liking Qrow's tone.
"Really? Oh that's great! I'll go get the others,"
Ruby ran out of the room while (Y/N) stayed put. Qrow glanced at him after taking a swing of his flask.
"Fire breather?"
"You don't trust Lionheart, do you?" Ozpin glanced at the boy in agreement.
"It does sound drastically different from your original conversation, does it not?"
"It does," Oz looked down.
"Interesting,"
"Things aren't looking good, Oz," the huntsman repeated as the headmaster raised his head.
"I know,"
"I could go check out Lionheart," (Y/N) volunteered. "If he's hiding something, I just need one good look at him to know!"
"While we appreciate the determination, (Y/N), it's too dangerous for you to go alone," the headmaster shot down. "We can't have you risking yourself like that," the boy stamped his foot.
"I'm strong! I can handle he throws at me!"
"Easy fire breather," Qrow said calmly. "Don't forget Leo's not a headmaster for nothing. He's a huntsman, and you're not even old enough to be considered a huntsman in training,"
(Y/N) pouted and crossed his arms. Ozpin smiled.
"I am impressed by how far you come, (Y/N), but it's best we stay together. Our strength lies with us being united,"
"Okay...but, what if tomorrow's a trap?" Qrow took another sip of his flask.
"I doubt Leo's got the guts to do something like that. Still," he smirked. "We're not pushovers. I think we're a little more than anyone can bargain for,"
