it was quite a pretty morning, clear skies and sun shining. peak summertime weather, though under a lab coat it was a bit of a pain in the ass. at least there was air conditioning in cognito. i walked into the building that morning, scanned my retinas and was quickly taken down into the company by the high tech elevator. my main focus for today was testing the dna samples of a new species of fish we'd found in the trenches, and check up on my diving project with andre and reagan.
i flicked through research papers on the way down, pencil tucked behind my ear and flask of coffee in my hand. i tucked the papers under my arm, checking my phone with a small smile as embers name popped up. she was doing good back in scotland, in my opinion on the pathway to becoming head of that division. i typed back a quickly reply before the elevator doors opened, and lucky i did, because the second the doors cracked apart i was grabbed and pulled down a hallway.
"you're gonna love me."
i stumbled after the black haired man, struggling to keep my phone, papers and coffee balanced. "i actually wanted to talk to you-"
"yeah, well we'll see about that after you take a look at this." he pulled me into his lab and finally let me go as he walked over to the counter opposite. i set my things down on his table, gathering the papers in order again. my eyes flickered over to him as he rattled around with something. "what is it?"
he turned back to me with a flourish, something held between forefinger and thumb as he walked back over. i squinted, pulling my glasses from on top of my head to look at the tiny object. "a pill?"
"not just any pill." he placed it into his hand, gentle blue colour of the capsule standing out against his skin. "your pill."
my eyes widened, quickly taking it from his hand and carefully turning it in my own. "are you serious?" i gasped softly, inspecting the aqueous coloured capsule.
andre nodded triumphantly, his own eyes gazing at the pill. "uh huh, just finished yesterday. andddd.." he turned around, grabbing something and turning back. "i have the rest here. i can make more whenever you want though, i have the formula down now."
he handed me a small pill bottle, gentle rattle as it fell into my hand. i looked up at him, ecstatic as i clutched it hard. "oh my fucking god andre, you are the best." i wrapped both arms around him in a quick hug, distracted by thoughts rushing into my brain. "okay, god i gotta make plans for today, see if the divers are free and get a boat-"
"hey, woah slow down. you got lots of time." he placed his hands on both of my shoulders, concern radiating from his aura. "you sure you're okay to-"
"i'm more than okay, goddamn. i'm fucking excited as shit man, you said these can last for..?"
"you'll get 4 hours, not including the time to take effect which is about 10 minutes."
i clapped my hands together, smile beaming across my face. "okay, yes that's fucking awesome! dr lee, you're a fucking genius.. hey listen, i'm gonna get some stuff sorted out, and we're gonna head off in about an hour maybe? you wanna come?"
"head off where?" asked andre in confusion. i laughed lightly. "to go diving? deep trench exploration? i mean, obviously not you, you'd stay in the boat and watch the feedback from one of our body cams."
his eyebrows shot up. "you're going today? right now?" he asked in disbelief. i nodded, tapping on my watch with a light smile. "yup, it's a perfect day to do it, and i've been waiting for this for so long you have no idea. okay, get ready and meet at the docks yeah? i'll see you there." i slapped his arm fondly before gathering all my belongings underarm and quickly walking out the door, leaving andre standing there gobsmacked.
god am i pumped.
