"And that concludes the lecture for today. Make sure to complete the reading and assignment before coming to class Wednesday."
The weekend went by quickly and it was back Monday already. I've been rehearsing how I was going to tell Dr. Lewis I was quitting but now that the moment is here, everything went out the window.
The class was over and I packed my things slowly, making sure everyone else had left before I said anything.
I go up to the podium where she was standing, putting her laptop away. "Dr. Lewis?"
She looks up at me and gives me a soft smile. "Ah, Omerettá, how's everything going?"
"It's going okay. Can I talk with you for a second?"
"Sure, but there's another class coming in soon. Let's go to my office."
I follow Dr. Lewis across the hall into her office, closing the door behind her. She sits down in the chair behind her desk and says, "Come sit and tell me what's on your mind. You seemed a little off today in class."
I sit in the chair in front of the desk and reply, "Yes um...I wanted to let you know that I...I can't work for Titan anymore. This is my resignation letter."
Handing her the letter, Dr. Lewis blinks at me and was taken aback. "Your what?"
"M-my resignation..." I repeated nervously.
For a moment, Dr. Lewis looked shocked but her expression went back to her regular demeanor.
"I see," she says, taking the letter and placing it on her desk without opening it. "This is unexpected but if this is your decision, I respect it."
It's crazy how she's taking this so easily...
"If you don't mind me asking, why do you not want to work anymore?"
"Right now I'm just dealing with a lot of personal issues..."
She looks at me for a few seconds but I couldn't tell what she was thinking which was even more nerve wrecking. "Hmm, I understand. If you need anything or anyone to talk to, I'm here, alright?"
"Thank you."
"However, we still have that deal about the dress don't we?"
"Yes, I have some designs ready," I reply, going through my tote bag to find my sketching journal.
Dr. Lewis stands up from her chair and walks over to sit down in the chair next to mine.
"These are the four designs I came up with....I know you really like cream and fuchsia so those were the colors I used."
She goes through the first two and nods, really taking them in. After looking at those, she turns the page and I see her eyes grow at the last design. It was the strapless cream mermaid dress I designed with rhinestones encrusted at the top.
"This one...this is the one. It's so beautiful."
"Thank you."
She continues staring at the dress in awe and points to the breakdown of the cost below it. "Is this the price for the materials here?"
"Yes, it's an estimate based on what size I think you wear."
"And what size do you think I wear?"
