I met up with Nico in the Library and we grabbed as many books about dreams and Divination as we could find without going in the restricted section.
"Have you found anything about dreams or possibilities of past lives?" I asked Ron as he flipped almost mindlessly through the pages of a big dusty old book.
He sighed, "No, still nothing. I mean, there is a lot about dreams but nothing that mentions past lives as far as I can tell it is isn't a real thing."
"Maybe we need to go into the restricted section," I suggested.
He shrugged, "I have no issues with that, the only problem is that we need a teacher to give us permission. And unfortunately I do not think that Hagrid will suffice for a reference. Especially considering the subject matter...we may need to get Professor Trelawney to write us permissions."
I quirked my eyebrows, "Bloody hell, I was poor in her class but she is possibly off her rocker just enough that she would give us a note."
Nico shrugged, "You're not wrong. There is no hurt that comes from trying. Maybe if we're lucky, she actually can give us some random piece of useful knowledge herself."
We proceeded to pack up all our things and we both picked one book each that we thought might be able to assist in the dreams portion of our research and we headed to Trelawney's classroom.
Of course, the only teacher that could assist us has a classroom located in the most annoying place to reach in the castle.
When we finally reached her room we found the door wide open and the classroom a borderline ghost town.
"Professor Trelawney?" I called out.
"What? Hello, yes!" A reply came with the cut off of a snore and a surprised tone of voice.
We ventured further into the room to find the Divination teacher with a quill stuck to her cheek and glasses crooked on her nose like she had dosed off between classes.
"Good afternoon Professor. We wanted to inquire with you about a question we're both having and possibly wondering if you'd write a note for permission into the libraries restricted section to to further research," Nico spoke eloquently...especially considering he was on the young side.
Come to think of it...he talks like an older person fairly often.
"Oh...well, what is it you were looking to learn more about?" Trelawney fixed her glasses and peeled the quill from her cheek.
I took the jump, "We were interested in the possible existence of past lives and similarly if they do exist...if dreams can show memories of a past life."
Trelawney pressed her lips together and seemed to be combing through racing thoughts, "Well...I've never studied it much before. Divination specializes in the future rather than the past. But dreams...I study those...and I guess you might say lots of our past have major effect on our future. I guess well...I have heard briefly...but there is no concrete evidence..."
Despite her rambling Nico caught on quickly to the last thing she'd said, "What? What have you heard?"
"I wouldn't say that this correlates directly to as you called it 'past lives' but I have heard that in cases of memory loss dreams can be memories breaking through that foggy barrier. So, in some rare and unlikely circumstance that someone had severe memory loss and also overnight their entire world was changed and switched, then I guess you could say that yes, dreams can show memories from a 'past life'"
It was start. And honestly, a substantial one.
"Professor. Would you be willing to write us permissions to look into the restricted section?"
She seemed too tired and have much back and forth on the matter because she simply nodded with her usual far off look and waved her wand and shooed us away.
We both shared a look and sped off back to the library. We were let immediately into the restricted section and started combing the stacks. It was a more strenuous process considering a lot of these books had minds of their own or were enchanted by their authors.
Whatever Trelawney was talking a out struck a nerve especially with Nico, he had a new drive in looking through the books, almost like he knew exactly the thing he wanted to be looking for. What the Professor said while a substantial start for our research had definitely not struck a chord in my mind the way it had with Nico.
"What do you think she meant?" I carefully asked not wanted to throw Nico too far off the groove he'd settled into.
"I think she is right." Was all he said.
He had something. I just did not know what it was, "Right about what."
"Right about the memory loss...I don't think these dreams are memories of a past life...I think they are of my current life but I've simply forgotten. That's why I recognize people here that I don't recall ever seeing before. That's why I hear dead people who aren't Hogwarts ghosts. There is an answer...I just don't have it yet but I'm not suppose to be at Hogwarts. I don't belong here."
"What do you mean you don't belong here?"
Nico pursed his lips...he thought for moment, may be about how to phrase what he wanted to say next but he eventually just came out with it...
"I'm not a wizard."
