Akaia awoke to a throbbing headache.
She groaned, raising a hand to shield her eyes from the harsh light that pierced through the tent. Every sound seemed too loud, too sharp—until she heard Neteyam's pained grunts.
She shot up from the mat, panic surging through her as she searched for him.
"Akaia's awake! Guys, look—she's awake!" Tuk squealed, pointing excitedly before launching herself into her sister's arms.
"Hey Tuk," Akaia said tiredly, wrapping her arms around the little girl and stroking her hair gently.
Looking up, she was met with a wave of relieved faces—her family stood together, eyes full of joy and worry.
Kiri stepped forward, a soft smile on her face. She joined the embrace, burying her head in Akaia's neck.
"We were so worried, sister. When I saw Dad carry you in, I was terrified."
"Shhh, it's okay. I'm here now," Akaia whispered, hugging her tighter.
Her gaze shifted past the girls to her brothers, both standing with their heads bowed in guilt.
"Get over here," she said, extending her arms.
They hesitated for a moment, then walked over and joined the hug.
"I'm sorry, sis," Lo'ak murmured, gently wrapping his arms around her. "I shouldn't have gone down there. I should've listened to you."
"It's okay. It's over now," Akaia replied softly. "I'm just glad we're all safe."
They stayed like that for a moment—one tangled knot of relief and affection—until their grandmother Mo'at approached, resting a hand on Akaia's shoulder.
"Alright, that's enough. Everyone out. I need to tend to Akaia—she hit her head hard."
Akaia chuckled as Mo'at struggled to shoo her siblings from the tent. Even Spider, who she hadn't noticed until then, followed the others out with a quiet wave.
Once the tent was quiet, Mo'at took her place behind Akaia and gently examined the wound on the back of her head. Akaia flinched as cold ointment touched the injury, the sting making her wince.
"How is it, doc?" she asked, trying to sound casual.
"You'll live," her grandmother replied dryly, rolling her eyes. "But you won't be riding your ikran for at least a week."
Akaia's head snapped up. "A week? But I'm meant to patrol tomorrow with Mum and Dad!"
Mo'at gave her a pointed look as she returned to her herbs.
"Yes, a week. You hit your head hard. I need to monitor you before you even think about flying again."
Akaia groaned, dragging herself up from the mat. She glanced down at her body—smudged purple and black war paint streaked her skin, matching Sar'zoo's colors and the feathers on her arrows.
"Grandmother, can I please wash up? I feel gross," she said, running her fingers through her tangled hair. "And my hair is completely ruined."
Mo'at raised a brow, then gave a small nod. "Take someone with you. You're not to be alone. And don't get your wound wet."
"Thank you!" Akaia grinned and limped toward the tent flap.
"Wait—Akaia!" she paused, turning back.
"Come see me tomorrow so I can recheck the wound."
Akaia nodded, then stepped outside into the warm air.
Her parents were sitting just outside. Neytiri was the first to react, standing quickly and wrapping her daughter in a tight hug. Jake let out a heavy breath of relief, setting down the gun he'd been cleaning before joining in.
"Hey, baby girl," he murmured, pulling back slightly to check the wound on the back of her head. Neytiri circled her, scanning for injuries.
"Guys, I'm fine. I swear," Akaia said, rolling her eyes.
"People who are fine don't have head wounds," Neytiri said, gently cupping her daughter's cheek. "You scared us, Kaia."
"I know. I'm sorry, ma."
Jake took her hand, his voice softer. "Go get cleaned up and rest. You look like you need it." He gave her a tired but warm smile. "I'll come talk to you tomorrow—once you're well-rested."
Akaia nodded as he returned to his gun.
"Come," Neytiri said with a teasing smile, taking her hand. "I'll help you wash and re-braid that hair. It looks like an ikran's nest."
Akaia snorted. "Gee, thanks."
Still, she held onto her mother's hand as they walked together toward the bathing pools—grateful, bruised, and alive.
