Chapter Two

The music was so loud that Avery could feel a headache begin.

It was past midnight. The night was still young for those that chose to spend their Saturday night partying on the beach with plastic cups and cheap liquor. The crowds were a mixture of Pogues and tourists. It reminded Avery of the party at the boneyard, just before everything started. All that time she spent there, she was full of fear and worry. Fear of losing her best friend in a fist fight, the same one that had now truly gone. And worrying about JJ handling a gun carelessly in front of a rowdy, drunk crowd.

"I swear he was just here" Kie grunted, her brown eyes frantically flickering from every person in sight. She twirled around and huffed, looking at Pope for help.

"Maybe he went to get another drink," Pope suggested, not having a clue where JJ could have ended up in the last ten minutes without supervision. He nodded over towards the crowd with red cups in almost every hand. "Come on"

The sand was kicking up her legs, making her more agitated than she already was. It wasn't in her plans to get a loud phone call with rubbish signal from Pope, telling her that JJ refuses to leave a party and hasn't stopped drinking since sunset. Her footsteps were purposefully heavy, stomping through the sandy ground. She hugged herself, even though the air was still humid, and smokey from bonfires. Her head titled back and forth, her eyes roaming around in hopes to catch a glimpse of the messy haired blond.

"There!" Kie yelled, pointing at their drunk friend. There he was, giggling away with a small group of people. The red cup in his hand was sloshing around, the liquor dancing around and almost slipping out. "JJ! Hey!"

His head snapped up at the sound of his name. If it wasn't for her mood, she would have blushed at the lopsided smile on his lips. And the way his hair was falling imperfectly. JJ took one step and wobbled, nearly falling over. That made him stop and blink rapidly, trying his best to regain his balance and vision. His sight was still blurry when the trio reached him. The group he had been with had detached from him, huddling around a new conversation.

"Oh, hey guys!" He carelessly said. His eyes longing stared at Pope and Kie, having not spotted his girlfriend yet. They blinked over at her, stopping his actions immediately at the sight of her. He lowered the red cup from his lips. JJ slowly turned to Pope, "why did you call her?"

"Because she is the only one that can get you home before you regret all this in the morning" Pope told him, ignoring his pouting face. He wasn't going to let him continue to drown his feelings, which he was clearly what he was aiming to do.

"Come on, J," Avery kept her tone neutral. She didn't want him to know how much she resented him in that moment. She reached out for his hand but he pulled away from her. "Are you serious right now?"
