Chapter Nineteen

This treasure hunt was gradually turning into a long history lesson.

"Accordingly, the Cross of Santo Domingo was a gift from New Spain to the Spanish king," Avery read off from the article her father linked her. "Oh wow, talk about over gifting"

Talking over her, JJ thought out loud, "New Spain? Was there an Old Spain?"

"Look at this thing" Avery flipped the phone, showing Pope a picture from the website. It was an historical photo.

Pope and JJ looked over at her, seeing the picture. The blond nodded, "so, it's a giant ass cross"

"It was widely considered at the time to be the most extravagant tribute ever from the provinces. It was lost off the coast of Bermuda in eighteen twenty nine" Avery continued reading the article. She didn't know where this was going, she couldn't see any link yet.

"Did you just say Bermuda?" JJ frowned. His ex girlfriend rolled her eyes, looking back down at her screen.

"Oh no, not the Bermuda" John B muttered.

"It always leads back to the triangle, dude. Like every single time somethings weird, it's Bermuda" JJ theorised.

"Okay, but what does a key found above your mee-maw's pharmacy have to do with any of this?" Kie directly asked Pope, also not seeing the link. "Where do we come in?"

"I don't know," Pope mumbled. "That's a good question"

Tensions were high. Pope had demanded to go alone to see his Mee-maw, John B and Sarah hadn't spoken since they left the Château and who knew what was going on between JJ and Avery. After dropping off Pope, they drove around to waste time. Parking up somewhere in the town, the girls chose to hop out and explore, leaving the boys waiting with the Twinkie.

In all honesty, Avery didn't know how to input on the conversation about relationships and boys. Her current situation didn't make a lot of sense to her. Neither of her friends questioned it, especially Kie, who was sworn to secrecy. That never meant she wasn't dying to ask millions of questions though.

It wasn't long until Avery finished her fizzy soda and Pope returned, climbing into the back of the vehicle. When asked how it went, his friends didn't expect his answer. "Shit just got way more personal"
