Chapter Sixteen

Somehow, the plan JJ created was actually working so far.

The ambulance pulled out from its parking spot. JJ hesitantly followed the police car, the blue lights flashing across their faces. Avery shuffled in her seat, readjusting the cap on her head. She couldn't believe that they had managed to get this far into the plan.  Now there was no time to back out. They were on their way to pick up John B, after he faked an attack of acute appendicitis. Something JJ had actually tried and managed to pull off during eighth grade.

Avery forced herself to stop fidgeting as soon as she felt JJ roll the ambulance to a stop. They were parked in front of the wired gates, they really couldn't blow their cover here. Security stepped out with a flashlight, turning it on the pair. The girl offered a tight smile, silently hoping that she didn't seem suspicious. JJ fiddled with his hat and listened to the directions to the transfer bay. Avery almost let out a loud sigh of relief.

"Copy that. Thank you, sir" JJ replied awkwardly. Avery quietly thanked him as they pulled forward and slowly drove through the gates.

Holding her gaze, JJ climbed out the vehicle and left her in waiting. Avery could hear JJ's causal conversation with the nurse, lying about Ricky's whereabouts. Her view through the mirrors were limited, making it hard for her to see what was happening. After what felt like hours, the back doors clicked open and JJ's voice became a lot clearer. Avery peeked her head out the window to hear better.

"So, where is your partner?" The nurse questioned. Avery acted quickly and opened the passenger door, stepping out.

"I'm here, ma'am" Avery appeared. She flicked her hair out her face and flashed a smile at the lady.

The nurse glanced between the two, "you gonna look after the patient while she drives?"

"Well, they told me that the officer could drive" JJ lied, avoiding Avery's eyes. He knew she couldn't drive stick. This could be the part where they mess up.

"No, he's an inmate. I gotta be in the back" The officer stepped in.

"Wait, hold on, officer. You're saying that you're gonna be responsible for me not taking care of my patient. Is that what you're telling me?" JJ argued, desperate to get moving. The phone continued to ring in the background, driving Avery slowly crazy. "Because look at him. He's weak, feeble, and pale and shit. And I gotta do medical stuff on him, or else we're gonna lose him, okay? Do you have the–"

"Yes, it's just in there" Avery caught onto what JJ was trying to convey. She climbed into the back of the van, stepping over to the cabinets, acting as if she was looking for something.

"You don't want that on your hands, do ya?" JJ told the officer, following her into the back. Thankfully the officer obeyed and helped the teen close the doors.

"JJ," Avery hissed, looking up from the patient to see JJ listening to the radio from the front seats. They had been on the move for a few minutes now. She clocked what was said and her eyes widened. Whispering, she smacked his arm, "J, what is happening?"

"Officer, everything good up there?" JJ cleared his throat. He was ignored and the small window slid shut. "Officer?"

It wasn't long until sirens blared, chasing the ambulance to the hospital. JJ frantically typed away at his phone, desperately trying to get hold of Kie. Avery couldn't help but feel awful, the patient had fallen unconscious. She leaned down and was relieved to find a steady pulse in his neck. A string of cussing escaped her lips as she pulled her hand away from the patient.

"Shit!" JJ yelled, landing a punch on the side of the vehicle. It made her jolt, staring wide eyed at him. She quickly realised what was happening and stood up.

"J, hey. JJ, look at me," She urged him. He ignored her, unable to focus on her voice over the sirens. Pushing against the wall, he bent over slightly and stared at the floor. She ducked under his arms and gently cupped her hands under his chin, lifting it up to meet her eyes. She offered a smile, "hey. It's okay, I'm here. Focus on me"

Suddenly JJ's body crashed against hers. A gasp left her lips, his weight had her pinned to the wall.  An dull pain radiated through her back at the abrupt force. The boy immediately pushed himself off her. His eyes flickered up and down her figure, checking for any obvious injuries.

She chuckled halfheartedly, lifting her hand and rubbing the back of her head. "I'm okay. You?"

"Yeah, I'm all right. Yeah" He stumbled, not realising the hold he hand on her waist. JJ's soft expression fell into a frown, he looked out the thin window to see that they had stopped.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" A familiar voice called obnoxiously, hoping to be heard. Avery instantly reached for the door. She was ushered on by JJ. Avery snapped back at him, telling him to help. Eventually they got the doors open and JJ was nudging her out.

"I'm seriously not even gonna ask" Kie frowned, keeping her eyes on the road ahead. JJ and Avery had piled in the back seats, panting and sweating from having to run through the woods to loop round, finding their friends.

"We busted the wrong guy out of jail. Sue me!"JJ huffed, slouching back in his seat. Avery shook her head at her words, reality was taking its time to settle. She couldn't believe that they got as far as they did, they got really close.

"Avery? What the hell?" Pope twisted in his seat. His eyes were wide and he didn't expect the girl to smile back at him.

"What? You really think I would let him do stupid shit alone?" She shrugged. Even though it didn't do perfectly to plan and they could off ended up in more trouble than already, she didn't regret doing it. Not with JJ by her side.

"I'm going to end up in jail anyway so," JJ quietly said. "So, why does it matter?"

"J," Avery softly spoke, resting a hand on his leg. His eye flickered up to hers, holding her gaze. "Stop that"

"You okay, man?" Pope sincerely asked.

"Yeah," He breathed, "just a doozy of a day"
