Chapter Seventeen

Avery silenced her bicker with JJ about him over-waxing his board, hearing the sound of honking.

The familiar sight of the Twinkie rolled into view. Sitting in the drivers seat was John B, a huge grin adorned on his face. As soon as he stepped out on the vehicle, his friends were charging towards him. Avery let out a squeal, "Johnny!"

Standing a warm group hug, Kie muffled, "we missed you"

"I missed you guys too" John B chuckled. He meant it. Being away from them for a short period was enough to drive him crazy, nevertheless when he was behind bars, having no idea what was going to happen or if they will ever be together again.

The hug dispersed and JJ eagerly asked, "how'd you do it? You bust out?"

"Uh, they dropped the charges" He replied, silently wishing for a better story to tell them but it was the truth.

"They dropped the charges" Pope repeated, relieved to know. It was a slither of hope.

"You're telling me," JJ shrugged, swinging an arm around Avery's shoulders. She was startled by the gesture, her eyes widening a little. "We did all that work for nothing?"

"Oh, the most elaborate escape plan of all time?" Pope teased them.

"Most foolproof elaborate escape plan" She cheekily corrected him, chuckling as he playfully rolled his eyes at her.

"Wait, where's Sarah?" John B blurted out, realising his girlfriend wasn't around. "No, no, no. Where- where's Sarah?"

Kie spoke up first, "she went to meet Wheezie last night. She didn't come back"

Somehow, Avery found herself with a cold can in her hand. She notoriously beat JJ at shotgunning, as always. The can clanked as it was dropped to the ground. The blonde wiped her mouth, watching JJ finish his drink seconds too late. He wasn't surprised she had beat him, it was a strange party trick of hers, and he always failed to beat her. He chuckled and threw down his can, knocking hers that laid on the grassy ground. The group had spilt, plotted around the Chateau and JJ and Avery found themselves alone together.

"I never got to thank you for, you know. So, uh, thanks" JJ muttered, looking down at the ground. His boot kicked around the grass, an awkward feeling had settled between them and he wasn't sure what to do or say.

"You don't have to thank me," Avery shrugged. A small smile tugged on her lips,  "I'd do it again if I could"

Her words had a hidden meaning, one she didn't intend to give. It had been a while since she actually thought about him, about them. Those thoughts were forced to the back of her mind. No matter what, or how much chaos was happening, Avery always had JJ on her mind. She couldn't stop her mind from wondering back to him. In that moment, she found that every other thought suddenly disappeared. He consumed her.
