Chapter Fifteen
✯¸.•'*¨'*•✿✿•*'¨*'•.¸✯John B has been charged with first degree murder, and if convicted, he faces the death penalty.
The arguing made Avery's head ache. She felt completely helpless, Pope had a good point; they couldn't go guns blazing at the authorities, or kidnap the Sheriff. There was very little they could do to save John B, to prove his innocence. Bouncing her legs, Avery tried to block JJ's yelling out but the more he went on about dumb ideas and raising his voice, she became more and more agitated and frustrated.
"Now, are we just gonna sit here and do nothing? No! We're gonna go get his ass," JJ clenched his jaw, "we're gonna do something about it!"
"JJ, we're not storming a jail. It's not happening" Pope's tone remained calm, baffling Avery as she knew she wouldn't have been able to keep her cool.
"No, fine, man. Sit in your comfy chair. Do nothing," JJ lowered his voice, sternly telling the others. His eyes blinked over to meet Avery's, holding her gaze. "I'm gonna see what I can do. Make something happen, even if I have to do it by myself"
Watching JJ turn on his heels and storm out into the heavy rain, Avery knew what she had to do, even if she wished she didn't, especially if it meant facing the rain. She abruptly stood up from the chair and sighed, "here we go again"
The droplets smacked against her skin. Her sneakers squelched as she rushed over the soggy ground, darting around the side of the Château. JJ was pacing, clearly trying his best to calm down before doing anything stupid. He didn't know what he was going to do, all he knew was that he had to do something. John B couldn't be claimed guilty for something he never done, they couldn't lose him like that.
"Hey! J, hey!" Avery called out, moving her sticky wet hair from her face. She huffed, being ignored. "Maybank! What are you doing? Huh? This is ridiculous. We have to stay together. We will do something, we will. We just need a better plan–"
"I have a plan–" JJ went to argue.
Avery gave him a shove, pushing his damp shirted shoulder back. She scoffed, "oh, yeah? Right, your plan. Are you trying to join Johnny behind bars? There is no way I'm letting you do this–"
"You don't have that hold on me anymore, Avery. If you and the gang want to sit around and wait for something to happen, then fine! I'm not gonna though" He stepped closer to her, head titling down to keep the eye contact.
Avery held his gaze and a smirk crossed her lips. His blue eyes flickered down to her lips and lingered. "If you would let me finish. There is no way I'm letting you do this alone"

In all honesty, Avery didn't have a lot of hope for JJ's idea. But she refused to let him do it alone, she promised that she wouldn't. Leaning up against the dirt bike, the blonde watched him stride into Kildare County Detention Centre. His hat sat backwards and fumbled with his headphones. She felt her lips tug into a smile as he saluted a pair of officers wondering past. His salute quickly turning into a middle finger as soon as their backs were to him.
It was only for a five minute visit. Yet, waiting for him to reappear felt like hours. Avery fiddled with her rings and picked at her old nail polish, feeling more anxious as the minutes ticked by. Eventually, the boy emerged from the building, by the hand of Plumb. Avery's posture straightened and she watched the officer carefully.
"I just have one question before I leave. How much are you splitting with Shoupe?" JJ cockily asked, earning a shove. He stumbled down a few steps.
"You'll be back one day," Plumb told him, "it's in your blood"
"You don't know shit, Officer" Avery's voice appeared. The blonde stood behind the woman, glaring at her. As she pasted, Avery purposefully shoved her shoulder into Plumb's, and hooked her arm under JJ's. As they walked away, she couldn't help but flash the officer the middle finger. It was the least she deserved after that comment.
"What was that for?" JJ muttered, hanging his head low. His ex girlfriend frowned at the question.
"What do you mean?" She asked. Their tracks stopped as they reached the bike, JJ unlinked their arms. "What she said? Was wrong. She doesn't know you, not like I do. And I'm certain that you are nothing your father, JJ"
"How did you–" He finally looked up at her.
A smile crept onto her lips. Avery gestured towards the bike and waited for him to climb on so she could get on behind. Wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her chin on his shoulder, she quietly said, "a breakup doesn't make eight years of friendship disappear. I know you, J"
