Chapter Twenty One

Sarah Cameron's return to the Cut was unexpected.

The key had been handed over to Renfield, meaning the real key to the Cross was in the hands of Limbrey by now. Avery wished she could ease Pope's anger. He had been furious about handing the key, even though it was a set up and the Pogue's stood no chance against Renfield and his crew. At least Sarah brought good news, which no one expected to happen, about the Island Room. That simple claim made the group jump up and pile into the Twinkie.

"Guys listen to this," Pope spoke up, catching everyone's attention. "The diary says the cross holds the most holy relic in all of Christendom, the Garment of the Saviour"

"So wait, he's saying there's a holy garment inside the cross?" Kie questioned.

"Yeah. It says the garment is capable of healing the sick from any malady" Pope continued to read.

JJ hummed, "yeah. If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well. What? I went to Sunday school?"

"No, you didn't" Avery muttered, frowning at the blond. He met her eyes and she looked away, focusing back on Pope.

"Well, that explains why Limbrey would want the cross so bad" Pope assumed.

Avery nodded along, "she believes it can heal her. Makes sense"

"What else does it say?" Kie asked, eager to know more about what they were getting themselves into.

"Many feel that we have sinned to steal such a sacred thing, and God will strike His vengeance on us" Pope read from the dairy passage.

"Thing is, God did have His vengeance" Kie voiced.

"The hurricane that sunk the ship. Denmark being the only one to survive" Avery extended from what she had said.

The Twinkie shortly rolled to a stop, parking outside the Cameron's house. The large, white house made Avery feel uneasy. Sarah led them through the long hallways, passed multiple different rooms that Avery didn't even know were necessary.

She lead them to a room at the end of a hallway, "Pope, look"

"Whoa! You've got to be kidding me" He gasped in surprise.

As Avery rounded the corner and stepped in, her eyes widened. Besides the grand and expensive decor, the walls exposed art work. Looking closer, the art represented a map. Avery didn't know where to lay her eyes, flickering around at every little thing. Sarah mentioned how it had been here the whole time, they just didn't know of it until now.
