Chapter Fourteen

Bail was the least she could have got.

Sitting in the cell, Avery picked at her nails until they bled. The call was short and that terrified her. Avery regretted her choice and wondered what would happen if she had called someone else. A certain blond boy had crossed her mind. Her wrists were still sore from the cuffs, they were clipped tightly onto her wrists and left indents. A thin layer of mud had dried on her knees and her clothes were still damp.

"Avery Creed," An officer appeared. The man rustled around with his stack of keys. He inserted a key and the call door clicked open, "Noah Creed is here to collect you"

Walking out and through the hallways probably had to be one of the most embarrassing moments Avery had ever experienced. Her father's back faced her, too busy discussing the bail cost to acknowledge her. She awkwardly stood next to him, purposefully out of his peripheral vision. The officer that bailed her out stood behind her, making her more nervous.

"Are you Avery's guardian?" The woman at the desk asked, ensuring that he was and the bail would go through correctly.

"Yes," Noah confirmed. He titled his head to see his daughter, his expression was blank. It made her want to puke. Looking back at the woman, Noah continued, "I'm her father"

The warm air hit her as soon as the doors opened. Noah took the lead, not battering an eye at her. He opened the door and stepped out, not bothering to hold the door open for her. She was startled by the behaviour, stumbling back as it started to close on her, pushing it back open. Her head hung low all the way to the truck. It was obvious that Noah was disappointed with her. She had never caused this kind of trouble. He never imagined to get a call from her from inside the police department.

The blond boy leaning against the vehicle pushed himself off of it at the sight of the pair approaching. JJ paced over to them before they even reached the truck. He didn't hesitate to head towards the girl, who was completely unaware of him. Crashing into her purposefully, JJ embraced her. She tensed at the sudden contact, titling her head up enough to get a glance of his dark grey, damp vest. She knew it was him, causing her body to relax against his.

"Come on" Noah sternly told the two. He ducked into the truck and wasted no time with initing the engine.

JJ pulled away and grabbed her shoulders, catching her attention. She looked up at him, her glossy eyes made him inhale sharply. He shook his head gently, "don't do that again. All right? Never do that again"

"Look, I know this isn't a good time to start this conversation but dad–" Avery breathed out, leaning over the couch to talk to her father.

"The only thing I want to hear from you is an explanation," Noah scoffed, twirling around. He raised his eyebrows, "What the hell, Avery?"

"That's fair," She muttered, repositioning herself onto her knees. JJ was awkwardly leaning on the back of the battered couch, fiddling with his lighter. "Okay, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have done it. He was attacking John B. You can't blame me for helping my friend!"

"You assaulted a cop! I raised you better than that, and I trusted you!" Noah raised his voice. He hardly ever looses his composure, similarly to Avery.

"Didn't you hear what I said? He was beating Johnny to the ground. I wasn't going to stand there and let that happen" Avery tried her best to keep her calm.

"Look where that got you! He still ended up in cuffs and on trail, Avery. I know how much these boys mean to you but if this is what its going to be like then I don't want you being apart of it anymore" Noah's gaze flickered over to JJ who accidentally met his eye-line.

"Mom might be alive," She blurted out. Her father and JJ turned to her, staring her as they processed her words. Nodding slowly, she continued, "Limbrey- Carla Limbrey. She could be working with her. She knew her- she knew me, dad. I- we need to finish this hunt, it might lead to her. We can't stop now. Please, don't get in my way"

"Aves," Noah sighed, rubbing his hand over his stubble. He closed his eyes for a prolonged moment before looking back at her. "This is how we lost you the first time. I don't think I can do that again. You have to stop this"

"Please, dad. Come on. What if she's alive and out there? She could be. And Big John too" Avery desperately said, trying to convince him to change his mind.

"No, Avery. I'm not going to lose you again, ok?–" Noah was cut off.

"She's with me this time, Noah" JJ spoke up. His voice wobbled a little, afraid to interject on their argument. He didn't mean to but he had to stand with Avery, even if that meant going against Noah.

"Is that supposed to make me feel better?" He scoffed at JJ, shaking his head in disbelief. The two teens really weren't going to give up.

The blond boy shrugged frowned, "you really think I would let anything happen to her?"

"No" Noah muttered. That was something he truly couldn't argue with.

    Author's note!
Another late update, I'm so sorry! Work has been kicked my arse so hard over the last few weeks and I've been trying so hard to stay on track. This is one of my favourite chapters of this story, I think. Hope you liked it, and I'll be back as soon as possible with another update!
