Chapter Twenty Seven

Ward being alive was the very last thing Avery wanted to be told.

"There's gotta be a better way of doing this" Avery grunted quietly. She awkwardly manoeuvred herself through the vent, silently cursing at John B for unhelpfully helping her. He hissed as she tumbled out, making a noise, whispering an apology.

The former lovers had the job of locking the crew into the hill once they were all rounded up, leaving John B and Kie to find Sarah and get to the lifeboat. Avery wasn't overly confident about the plan, they could easily be outnumbered if anything happened to gone wrong. But they needed to take a win, for Pope and Sarah.

The lights flashed red, alerting the crew to move. Distant chatter made Avery push herself further against the wall. JJ softly hissed at her, quietly asking her how many people she could see. She double checked before flashing him three fingers. More voices joined the group, complaining about the captain and what was happening. JJ's fingers counted the figures, keeping track. Checking to count again, Avery hardly peeled around the wall before snapping back, holding her breathe. The glimpse of Rafe Cameron was enough to make her body tense.

"That's all of them" Avery whispered. Already knowing his response before he spoke.

"Except Ward. We need Ward" JJ gritted his teeth, not liking the narrow stare Avery gave him.

"We can't wait, J" She sternly whispered, knowing she was right. JJ held her gaze, reluctant to obey. He shook his head and immediately darted around the wall as she was already running towards the door.

As Avery forced all her weight onto the heavy door, JJ ran up behind her and securely placed himself around her. His hand reached for the lock, yet the crew fought back, making the door bounce back at them. She yelled at him to lock it, knowing he was already trying his best to but the movement was making it harder. Thankfully, JJ got the lock on.

"Shit, there's another door!" Avery squealed, already sprinting off to find the other exit. She easily spotted it, instantly closing it before the crew reached it. JJ locked it and pulled her away, dragging her along with him.

The department above them creaked, sunlight leaked in as soon as the latch lifted. Pope stood above them, making the pair yell and cheer. Avery's cheeks ached as she widely smiled up at her friend. She wasn't going to let history repeat itself. The name didn't define her, she was rewriting the pages. Avery was going to give this to Pope, he deserved every dim the gold cross had to offer.
