Chapter Thirteen ✯¸.•'*¨'*•✿✿•*'¨*'•.¸✯
The sound of a car door shutting interrupted the group.
Breaking the tension, JJ mocked a chicken sound. He was silenced by John B's hand blindly covering his mouth. Avery rolled her eyes at his antics. Rustling footsteps caused the Pougue's to act quickly. The boys stomped out the small campfire as best as they could. Even though it seemed like a ridiculous idea but also the most suitable one in the moment, Avery suggested climbing and hiding in the tree above them. They had climbed the tree multiple times in their childhood, she knew how easy it was to hid in.
Her heartbeat thumped against her chest. Avery let John B help Sarah up before she followed. Like muscle memory, she climbed up as quickly and quietly as she could. JJ hardly waited for her to get up onto a branch before he started climbing. She wiggled herself onto a branch, softly grunting at feeling of her exposed skin grazing against the bark. Without thinking, JJ lifted himself up on the same branch as her, sitting behind her.
Resting her forehead against the trunk, the blonde was overly aware of her own heartbeat in her ears. She subconsciously held her breathe in fear that the smallest of noises would give them away. A figure stalked over to their smoking fire, becoming clear enough to be identified. It was Rafe. She hadn't physically seen him since being on the tarmac. The simple sight of her made her body heat up, anger almost downing out the fear. Avery gripped onto the trunk a little harder, her trembling fingers started to ache a little.
"Where the hell are you?" Rafe muttered, his gaze slowly looking around the Château. He clearly had noted the fact that the fire had recently been put out, something that indicated that they had to be somewhere, and close.
A shattering sound made Avery's body jolt. She cuddled closer to the branch, closing her eyes. Barry appeared from inside, throwing the door open. She hated listening to Rafe's voice rise, reminding her how near he was. As much as she hated him, she was equally as afraid of him, especially nowadays. The pair began to bicker, raising their voices at each other about the Pogue's not being around. The Kook was determined to find them, and neither of them knew why he wanted to.
"So, your sister's a Pogue for life now, huh, Rafe? Now who would've thought?" Barry was obviously aggravating him.
It was working as Rafe quit laughing and let out a scream, "shit!"
Rafe's gun clicked and gunshots were fired. Avery had to swallow her yelp, feeling her body flinch with every shot. She screwed her eyes shut tighter, not seeing the gun flailing around and pointing in her direction. An arm tightly wrapped around her waist and yanked her back. Her eyes snapped open at the feeling of her body colliding with another. The flickers of bark made her realise what had happened.
