After Jai told me Luke was in the hospital because of me, no other details were shared. I had to excuse myself from Damien and the movie we planned to see. I told him what happened and he seemed fidgety yet not really phased by the news, but I didn't really care about his reaction, I just needed to know what happened. Jai was next door and took me to my aunt's tan Honda mini van which the boys were temporarily using. We hadn't said anything to each other, too focused on getting on our way.
"What the hell happened?" I asked, obviously confused. I was being blamed for something I had no clue about. "Jai, I swear I didn't do anything." My tone was serious as I looked straight into his light brown eyes. He looked back into mine, at first unsure, but then believing.
He nodded as he turned the key in the car's engine as it came alive. "We just have to get there and see how he's doing, then we'll ask him. The hospital called me since I'm his emergency contact in the U.S., and the nurse said there was no use in calling him; he's been unconscious for a long time."
"Question."
"What?" He asks as he turns onto the main road.
"Why didn't you just go alone or take one of the boys with you? Why did you take me?"
"Well, the nurse also told me that last night, before they had to sedate him, he was going crazy saying the words 'It's all Alex's fault'. That's why I also told you you were to blame. Sorry, by the way." I could swear his cheeks go the slightest bit red in regret. "I called you right after the nurse called me and I was a bit of a hot head."
"It's fine, it's your brother for fuck's sake. I'm surprised you're not tearing me apart right now." He laughs under his breath. "Did they say how serious his injuries are?" The hospital wasn't far from the house and we were already almost there.
"Not really, I mean they said it was nothing fatal, so I'm not that worried. I just wonder what got him so wild they had to put him to sleep to calm him down."
We enter the parking lot.
"I'm sure he's gonna be fine. Don't worry," I say, trying to offer some kind of comfort as I touch his shoulder. His eyes look almost alarmed by my touch at first, but I then feel his muscles relax under his SpongeBob t-shirt. After I retract my hand from him,we find a parking spot and exit the car.
We walk side to side from the car to the entrance of the hospital in silence. I watch the sign Long Island Mercy Hospital and try to push aside my absolute hatred for hospitals. I remember once trying to watch Grey's Anatomy and throwing up within the very first minute of a surgery scene.
I realize that I was standing in front of the sign and slightly jog up to a worried Jai who just entered through the doors, not noticing my disappearance from his side. He's too focused on getting to his brother. We walk up to the front desk, and Jai's the one who speaks.
"Hey," he says, almost out of breath like he's hyperventilating. A nurse with bright blue eyes and curly red hair that rests on her shoulders looks up to him. Her cheek bones are high and sharp and her lips full. She looks young, probably no older than twenty two. If Jai wasn't so mentally busy about Luke, he would probably hit on her. Hell, I would have.
"I-er-uh." He looks so stressed and helpless. People are rushing around the circular front desk that we're at, some panicked others unconscious. We can hear gurneys being pushed behind us and people screaming out with pain. His eyes just dart around him, wide with fear.
"Where is Luke Brooks?" I blurt to the red head. Her vivid-colored eyes turn from Jai to me, and then she grabs the mouse attached to the computer in front of her. After about thirty seconds of her typing and clicking with the use of her red, long painted finger nails, she says "Room 206 in the ICU."
