Luckily, my dad's car was parked in front of my house when I made my way there, so I decided to use the front door for once rather than the ladder. I opened the door and found the small living room and kitchen space with my parents silently eating leftovers. Once my dad saw me, his face lit up as always.

"Hey honey!" He greeted while my mom questioned my whereabouts. I ignored her as I sat across from my father at the dining room table that was placed in the kitchen. The first floor was small and served the purpose of so many rooms: kitchen, living room, and dining room.

"Hi, dad!" I said as I snatched a banana from the fruit bowl set in the middle of the table. I peeled it quickly and took a bite. "What's up?"

He chewed slowly on his pasta and swallowed. "Marine got worse so we have to go see her and make sure she's really getting taken care of." Marine was a woman my dad met through work as a client. She was old, wrinkly, and currently dying of pancreatic cancer. I don't mean to seem inconsiderate, but there was a reason why my parents were the ones who had to help watch over her and not her family and friends; it was because she had none, or the family she had practically abandoned her. I only came to see the woman once and she yelled at me for having curly hair. How's that my fault? Anyways, I remember her having a huge house and men servants. With her attitude, money can't buy love, so she's alone.

"How long are you going to be?" I questioned, taking a large bite from the banana again. I spit some out as I spoke and my dad wiped some white saliva off of his face with a slight laugh. I should probably learn how to eat like a girl.

"Well, she's getting worse by the minute so who knows? Maybe a week. However long it takes." He stood up with his empty dish and fork and placed them into the sink followed by my quiet mother. Just then I noticed the suitcases at the end of the staircase.

"You're already packed?" I asked chewing on my last mouthful and throwing out the banana peel. Usually, my parents would plan a visit to Marine and leave the next day, not the next hour. She must be worse than I thought.

"Marine already called a car to pick us up to bring us to the plane. We just wanted to get some food in and hoped to catch you before then." That's when a long black car pulled up in front of the house with a tall and thin man in a fitted black suite and sunglasses getting out of it. Could Marine have picked more of a cliche car or outfit for her driver? The man quickly knocked on the door and after my mom opened it, he grabbed the red suitcase and reached for the blue.

"No thank you. I've got it." My dad smiled to the man nicely. Despite the dark and solid glass on the man's face, I swear I could see him roll his eyes and walk back to the car. My mother grabbed her purse and walked out the door with a simple "goodbye" to me.

My dad then placed his hands on my arms just below my shoulders and crouched so we were the same height. I had a flashback to my first day of school and him giving me a 'don't worry, you'll see me before you know it' speech.

"Listen, I left four hundred dollars in the cookie jar that your mother doesn't know about. Only use it for necessities. Call me whenever you can and don't make this place into a mess so she doesn't kill you. I personally don't want to get in between you and a dagger in her hand; you know I don't like picking sides." He gave me a reassuring smile with glossy eyes.

"Are you going to Texas, or war?" He dropped his hand from my sides and laughed before gripping the handle of his suitcase.

"Bye, Alex." He finally walked out the door, but turned back for a second. "And don't throw any parties."

"You always ruin the fun." I joked. He knew I was the last person to ever throw a party even with my parents away indefinitely. He shut the door behind him and I watched as the dark expensive car drove off.
