We'd only walked for a couple of
minutes and did so in silence. I was absentmindedly kicking pebbles off the sidewalk and onto the streets until one didn't budge. I could have sworn I was falling off a cliff with the concrete of the floor just an inch from my face when he caught me. I breathed heavily as his grip on my stomach tightened on me to bring me back to my feet. I tried to stand on my own, but epically failed."Ow, fuck." My ankle was definitely hurt, probably sprained.
"Quite the mouth on this one, huh? Do you want me to carry you?" He attempted to cradle me, but I nudged him. We only had one more block before we would get to my house; from here I could see my parents weren't home and more detail. Zach was jogging down the street.
"Sorry, I just need some support is all." He nodded in understanding and used his arm to place mine on his neck and put the other on my waist, but not too low. Zach was gonna reach us at any moment and I didn't want to talk to him. I hoped that if I had my head turned he wouldn't recognize me.
"So, um what are you doing in New York?" I faced Luke even though our heads were too close in this position, but I didn't care. There was a bump forming on the center of his forehead; we hit each other harder than I thought.
"Well, we wanted to come here for the summer, and a friend of my mom's offered us her house while she's away, so we're staying there."
"Where does she live?"
"Hope Place."
My aunt lived on that street and I was gonna ask what the friend's name was, but we were rudely interrupted. "Hey Alex." I look in front of me to find Zach standing out of breath with his usually blond hair stuck to his forehead but now brown thanks to his sweat.
I just gave him a death stare."Leave me alone." I grit.
"Come on, babe, don't be so nasty."
Did he really call me babe? Luke looked over at me confused. "It's not what you think. We aren't dating anymore." Luke responded with a raise of his eyebrows.
"Oh, please. You'll come back; you always do." He smirked.
"Yeah, right." I scoffed.
"That's what you say now; I know I'll see you at my door soon." I rolled my eyes. He and I didn't exactly end on good terms; he wanted something from me I just couldn't give. I couldn't let him think I was still hung up on him. We broke up on the last day of school and it's been about a week and a half since.
"Trust me, I'm over you." I could hear Zach laugh under his breath. He needed to be convinced and I had no problem in helping with persuasion. I used my left hand to lower Luke's on my waist to a level someone I met five minutes ago's hand shouldn't be. I could feel Luke tense to the transportation of his hand. "Meet my boyfriend."
Luke almost on cue moved his right hand from holding mine around his neck out towards Zach. "Luke Brooks. Nice to meet you."
Zach laughed again. The sound of his enjoyment made my blood boil. "Luke Brooks, huh? I'm really glad you've moved on, Alex, truly. Tell me. How's Kat's leftovers treating you?" He asked, ignoring Luke's offer to a hand shake.
Luke's head automatically dropped to the ground. Zach wished us a great day and pushed passed. I felt so pathetic. I knew exactly who "Kat" was. Katherine Peterson was notorious for her skank status and bitchy attitude.
"You dated her?"
"I wouldn't exactly classify what we did with each other as dating." He smiled awkwardly.
"Oh God, you're gross. Let me just get you your damn ice pack and leave me." In my head I planned on a dramatic storm out, but with my ankle screwed up I just ended up limping a step ahead of Luke, waiting for him to catch up, and then limping in front again. I couldn't walk without him and I hated having to be dependent on this guy. He was a pig just like Zach. Then again what guy wasn't?
