"Shit, it's my dad." I groan before sliding my thumb across the screen and picking up. His voice booms through the small speakers of my cell phone with his tone belligerent. "Why the hell have you been ignoring my calls? I've been worried sick! Do you have any idea how many times I've called you?"
"Dad, calm down." I try to ease his frantic speech, but the feeling of Jai's nails tickling the bottom of my feet, makes me giggle.
"Who are you with? Do you have someone with you?" His voice is laced with anger and curiosity.
I try to mask my laughter as best I can when I answer. "No, dad I'm alone."
"Where are you? Tell me now and honestly, or so help me God I'll let your mother punish you however she wishes. I won't step in."
A knot in my stomach forms with his demand, and it grows when I lie. "I'm home alone, of course."
"How dare you! I trusted you enough to leave you here, and this is what you do! Get your ass home right now from where ever the hell you are!"
I quickly throw myself off the couch. "What do you mean? You're back?"
"Yes, Alex I'm home, where you should be! If you're not here in five minutes, you won't just have your mother's wrath fall on you." The line goes dead and I stand there speechless with the phone still against my ear. Jai looks up at me, his face confused.
"Alex, what's wrong?" He sits upright on the couch.
"My dad, he's back. I-I have to go." I turn to leave, but Jai catches me, before I make it to the door, his hands are on my sides.
"I get you need to leave, but what does this mean?" He searches my face for some indication of the response, but I have no idea.
"I don't know." His face falls along with his hands from my shoulders, but I grip his wrist before he can walk away. He faces me with a frustrated stare and I place my hands on his cheeks.
"Listen, I wish I could stay with you, and you could come to my house, but my dad would literally slaughter you on the spot."
I feel him relax underneath my fingertips. "I'll call you tonight, okay?" He nods his head and plants a kiss on the corner of my mouth, and with that I walk out the door and to the home I had almost completely forgotten about.

"Where the hell have you been?" In the very short walk from my aunts' house I had been trying to muster up some sort of bullshit excuse they would believe as an answer to that very question, but I managed to come up with nothing.
"Answer me!" I close the door behind while I sigh and turn around to find my mother screaming with my tired father behind her at the dining table in the kitchen. Her eyes are fully focused on me, awaiting my explanation, while my father's are planted on the wood of the furniture he's seated at.
"Alex!" She yells once more, her scream ripping through the air of the small home, yet still not being able to pierce the tension in it.
"What difference does it make?" I say, not answering the question.
"What are you talking about? Tell-"
"Whether I was out feeding the poor or praising satan, you're still going to find a way to scold me for it, so what difference does it make?" I cross my arms over my chest, hoping it'll make her not ask me again. I have no friends, so I couldn't say I was at their house without them knowing I was lying. I could say I was at my aunt's but they know she's not home. Do they know about the boys?
